At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it. The old town is so so nice. It's also very well connected to other places like Reigoldswil for the waterfall or to Augusta Raurica which I recommend.

Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!

Very nice city, everything is very tidy.
Very nice city, everything is very tidy. The public transportation is very good. A lot of tramways and every several minutes coming the next one. We used tramway 8 to go to Germany and tramwat 3 to go to France. I recomend to visist the Stadtcasino and also to take the train and to go to Augusta Raurica about 20 km from Basel. It was a nice site with roman remains and also a nice rural walking outside the city. There are trains every 30 minutes.

Very vibrant as far as the museums are concerned.
Very vibrant as far as the museums are concerned. City for art lovers. Also very easy to move within the city with any kind of public transportation. Transportation was free, and the museums are for half the regular price with the card given by the hotel.

Basel is a very touristy and romantic city.
Basel is a very touristy and romantic city. It is very easy to explore and walk around. Quite expensive, I would recommend to visit museums on the first Sunday of every month(free) and also find an accommodation which provides Basel card in case you would like to tour the city by bus or tram.

A beautiful city. I arrived Saturday evening.
A beautiful city. I arrived Saturday evening. The train station was a little busy and the shops were too but it was to be expected. I explored the city on Sunday, it was very quiet as the locals don't tend to work on Sundays. I managed to see every attraction and walk around the whole city and down to St Jacobs in around 5 hours. It is beautiful, clean, and everyone was friendly. If you learn a little German, they really appreciate it! Just remember to respect the environment and enjoy your time there and it is fine. The railway services there are unbelievable too. Direct trains to Zurich within an hour without delays would be unheard of in the UK. Very impressed!
Excellent location for visitors to the fair, plus great transport links to the city centre and you can be in the old town in a few minutes. I also received a card from the hotel entitling me to free travel on public transport and discounts on museum tickets throughout my stay.
Breakfast plentiful, very good, lots of options both sweet and salty.
Rooms ok, the equipment's glory years are long behind it, but it is clean.
We spent two nights in this hotel during our trip to Switzerland, one at the beginning of our trip when we arrived in Basel, and another one before we left the country. When we came back for our second night of stay, Tamara at the reception and Leonardo at the buffet remembered us and knew us by name. The kindness and professionalism of the staff makes you feel like you are in a five star hotel.
Very clean, large and spacious, great facilities, plenty of room in the kitchen and utensils to cook, amazing location just a short straight walk from the station, plus it's a great station to get to various other parts of Switzerland quite quickly and directly, and really lovely staff- super helpful and friendly dudes with great local info and Swiss travel tips!
We chose Motel One due to a previous wonderful stay with this chain and it’s proximity to the start and finish line of the Dreiländerauf, a half marathon though Switzerland, France, and Germany. it’s in a perfect location downtown, amidst sights, open plazas used for public events. restaurants, and the river Rhine. super-clean and comfortable!!
Great clean hotel , super friendly staff , central location ( a little walk from old town and Rhine river ), also parking garage right under hotel great price for parking ! And they gave out free Basel city card with discounted admissions to Basel museums and free public transport . Will definitely come back ! Excellent value for the price !!
Loved loved loved everything. Everything feels like great quality from the attention of the staff, the toiletries, the sheets etc. Bonus: gym and spa access. Nothing is casual here, all has the intention to create a perfect experience. My favorite hotel in Switzerland right now.
We loved this hotel. Great location, design, comfort... what more could you want. We have stayed twice. Reasonable value for Switzerland, too. We cycled there on our own bikes and they let us keep them in the courtyard. Super helpful staff.
In our trip we stayed in 12 Hotels and this has to be one of the most Beautiful hotels and rooms we booked. The Staff was EXTREMELY ATTENTIVE AND HELPFUL. The restaurant was very good. Location is Perfect. 20/10.
The room was really good for the price in Switzerland. It had good privacy, a beautiful balcony and having a private washroom with this price is a really good thing. Overall, a good stay.
Easy location in the midst of Old Town. Parking Garage very close and hotel gave great directions to parking facility and getting to hotel. Great large deck off of room.
Everything was perfect. I didnt make it to the breakfast but the place seemed good enough :)
also, the room had a balcony... rare occasion in Switzerland.
Friendly , professional and polite staff . Close to city centre , with tramstops just a few steps away from the hotel . Excellent view from the 14th floor .
