New Discovery: Switzerland
As you drive up the gentle hill and spot the dramatic Hotel Paxmontana on the crest, you will be immediately enchanted. Built in 1896 in the grand old Victorian resort style, the Paxmontana is a sprawling four-story mansion topped by a mansard roof with gabled windows, perky turrets, a Swiss flag, green shutters, and wraparound balconies. Although lager than most of the hotels in our guide, the Paxmontana has nostalgic, old-world character, impeccable upkeep, outstanding gardens, and the genuine hospitality of an intimate, family-run hotel. The lounges are spacious an attractively decorated. Stretching across the front is a delightful restaurant in a glass-enclosed porch where every table faces the window with an unobstructed view. A second, more formal, dining room has a charming forest view. The simple guestrooms are moderately sized and the bathrooms somewhat dated, but the upkeep is perfect and the décor is sweet and cheerful. Most guestrooms have a balcony, and all have a beautiful vista – those in front, a sweeping view of valley and mountains, and those in back, the pretty forested hills. Intentionally, no televisions or radios are in the rooms since most guests come for the joy of being close to nature and for long walks along the many wooded paths. Many guests come to visit the birthplace of the renowned Saint Nicholas, born here in the 15th century in a nearby cottage.

Food & beverage

Breakfast is served from 07:00 to 10:00 and is served in the dining room. An à la carte lunch is served in the Restaurant Veranda from 11:30 till 14:00. Dinner is served in the Restaurant Veranda or in the dinning room from 18:30 till 21:00.

The additional cost for Half- Board is CHF 30 per person per day (2007) and can be directly paid at the hotel.

The menu offers a choice of delicious specialities from Switzerland and the Obwalden region.

The unique, 47 metre long Restaurant Veranda with its glass façade looks out across the spectacular Sameraatal and Glaubenberg. The cool terrazzo flooring, wood panelled walls painted yellow to recreate the style of the Neo-Renaissance, decorated with Impressionist-style canvas paintings and the Art Nouveau style lamps with their discreet lighting, all combine to create a special ambience in this room.

The original dining room has a beech wood parquet flooring laid in a herringbone pattern, edged with dark walnut and cherry wood. The glass façade birings warmth and light into the room, as well as opening up a fantastic view over the greenery of the surrounding Buchenallee.

Room information

All rooms have a shower/WC, safe and usually come with a balcony, direct outward dialling and fantastic views over the lake or mountains.

Area information

Right in the geografical centre of Switzerland, between Lucerne and Interlaken. From Lucerne take the highway A2, change at Hergiswil to A8 direction Interlaken, exit Sachseln. In Sachseln turn left to Flüeli-Ranft.

The position of the hotel and the room we eventually got (see below)

When we arrived were allocated a room in the annexe, a sort of student-type chalet behind the bus park about a quarter of a mile from the hotel itself. We booked this hotel on the basis of its size and position. Nowhere in the literature is an annexe mentioned, and the whole sales pitch is centered around its location. We complained strongly and were given a proper room for the rest of our stay.

Splendido hotel, situato in un paesaggio quasi fiabesco. Indimenticabile il panorama, pulite le stanze, ottimo il cibo e molto gentile e cordiale il personale. In macchina non è lontano da Lucerna e sono possibili belle visite e passeggiate anche nei dintorni. Sicuramente un posto dove è possibile davvero rilassarsi e un posto in cui ritornare!

Phantastische Lage oberhalb des Saarner Sees in ruhiger Bergidylle, Tolle Wanderwege rund um das Hotel, im Restaurant haben wir lediglich einmal Salat gegessen, der war sehr gut. Öffentliches W-Lan (in der Lobby).

Erg aangename, joviale ontvangst (welkomstdrink, uitleg over het hotel en zijn organisatie (ontbijt, restaurant,...), mogelijke uitstappen in onmiddellijke omgeving (startpunt voor verschillende wandelingen). Kamers zijn net en functioneel. Restaurant met prachtig uitzicht. Jugendstil overheerst. Erg rustig hotel. Prijs/kwaliteit een aanrader.

Toen wij na een lange rit vanuit Nederland en nog een slingerweg naar boven het hotel zagen liggen werden we er stil van. Het is een prachtig en inderdaad sprookjesachtig hotel. De omgeving is adembenemend en je kunt het bijna niet verwoorden wat het met je doet. De ontvangst was heel hartelijk, de bediening ook. Heel persoonlijk. We kregen een welkomsdrankje en meteen een wandelkaartje + uitleg.

Helemaal niets. Het is wel wat aan de prijzige kant, maar je krijgt zeker waar voor je geld.
