The family-run Hotel Alpina right in the heart of the car-free resort of Mürren offers a unique location and spectacular views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
Score from 280 reviews Excellent
The area is expensive but it is gorgeous. We went during winter and now plan to go back during summer just to see it again.
Nothing bad to say
Location Frequency of Gondola's to Murren Rustic atmosphere Price Friendly staff and beer is cold Tobaggan availability - best way to return to Pensione from Murren
Old building, therefore expect to hear people walking around in room above you.
Location - tiny, serene, mountain village accessible only by cable car. Breathtaking views. Fun atmosphere with mix of travelers and engaging staff. Wifi worked well and was easy to use.
One step above a hostel with shared dorm-like showers and toilets, very basic furnishings. Hard beds, make sure you are exhausted when you go to sleep!
Good food Great view
Not friendly Needs makeover badly Priced too high compared to other options
Beautiful views just outside the door, easy cable car access and connections through the whole area, lots of hiking options nearby. A charming interior to the house, and staff who were friendly and approachable. The private rooms are very attractive and looked comfortable. The dorm room is charming, though it's tucked under the eaves. Bedding is warm and adequate. The restaurant/bar area is inviting.
The shower/toilet facilities are shared among a lot of beds, and the shower is poorly ventilated. There was mold in the shower room. That's the reason I gave it lower rating for cleanliness; otherwise, the place was clean. In the dorm room, the mattresses are on the floor (because it's a low slanting ceiling under the eaves). My mattress was on the worn out end of its life. Also, it shared a wall with the toilet/shower and the rattling bathroom fan. So, not my most comfortable hostel sleep ever, but also not too bad. And, finally, wi-fi was spottier than hoped for.
We loved the views from the restaurant & the balcony. We also liked that the restaurant had a backpacker's special each night. The staff was very friendly.
The walls were very thin and everything rattled and squeaked when people walked around. So it wasn't a quiet stay. The balcony had laundry hanging in it during our entire stay so we were never able to enjoy it.
The location is the best. The property is similar to a hostel, but we chose to have a private room, so can't comment about dorm type setting. We had a wash sink in our room which is always helpful when the WC/showers are down the hall. Quiet sleep, but we were there only one night.
Location Easy to access from the cable car Staff were super friendly Beds really comfy Seems to attract a quiet & respectful crowd.
Showers had no hot water in evening (only in the morning) Whole building creaks when someone goes up or down the stairs... But rest of the guests were very respectful, and this fact was well signed by the venue... So it was pretty quiet between 11pm & 6am.
rural community off the beaten path
noise from people outside, beds a bit soft, strange specials in the restaurant
Not enough lights in the room. Not very clean. We booked two nights and stayed one night.
Had a magic time here. From the (terrifying!) cable car up and seeing the Pension for the first time... it was a special moment for me. I stayed in the dorm which was really cosy and comfortable. It was a quiet atmosphere there so early rising for hikes was easy - that's one of the reasons I went for this rather than the hostel. After a knackering day it was nice to come back and chill. I found I met some really cool, likeminded people here who were respectful of the quiet atmosphere but still had chats and socialised. The staff were all brilliant, really friendly guys. The view is epic from the terrace. Can't recommend enough!
Very well situated Beds were super confy Room was nice
Not great value for money (no toilet in room) Staff was unwilling to serve any food at 21:05 (kitchen closed at 21:00...)
The location was beyond. The moment you stepped off the gondola you knew you were in a special place. Then sitting on the deck in the back looking at the sheer magnitude of the cliff faces was priceless. The staff was friendly, the food was good and all in all a great hostel experience
Nothing - the price/value ratio made it all work.
great location good value for money
too many beds in the dorm
The views of the mountains from the front patio are exquisite. Wi-Fi is included and works in one's room. It's included in the room fee. Cosy lounge/breakfast/dinner room. It's about 50 yards from the cable car. The staff try very hard and are friendly and helpful. The room was clean and beds made nicely. Welcome was warm and helpful with answers to all questions we asked.
Fire alarm box dominates the entrance hall! Just be aware no en-suite - but it's fine if you are OK with that - as we were. Wi-Fi would benefit from booster unit so one can use it on the patio. Be aware it is a low bandwidth line and is slow during periods of high use. Breakfast is extremely basic.
Comfort of main room...friendly staff...stupendous view.
Price. Too high for sharing tiny bath with so many people. Staff were friendly but not committed. Seemed ready to head for home.
Gimmelwald is a special place and Pension Gimmelwald could be so much more. The views were superb.
The building is in need of attention. Service was so so....young staff could benefit from additional training on service. Food was okay. Breakfast was a little too simple.
Good accommodations. A bit overpriced for what it is.
The food was overpriced and terrible.
Good location, near cable car
Indifferent staff, mostly young UK graduates with little knowledge of region and poor manners. Fire alarm went off multiple times during night due to fault management knew about but did not fix.
Location, cost compared to Interlaken, views, hikes
no bathroom in room, but undestandable
Staff was extremely welcoming and helpful
Great location near the cable car. Very nice staff. Village, I heard from a local, is great for getting anything Alp (cheese, milk, etc). Great base to hike to or from Murren and other villages.
Nothing, really. A bit more social stuff going on the other hostel nearby- but you can drop in there, make friends, then come back to the quiet, cosy hostel ;)
Immense location in beautiful village below Alps. Stunning location , historic village. Very comfortable Pension with delicious food. Friendly relaxed atmosphere. Excellently clean facilities . Would definitely return for longer stay .
Very little soundproofing between rooms because of age of hotel.
Location is great. Comfort is nowhere to be found
Low ceilings .
