I just (June 2015) had one of the worst hotel experiences of my life at
the Sunset Resort. I would absolutely recommend against staying here.
Never been to Rarotonga before, so I booked Sunset Resort based on the nice reviews here. I checked-in very hungry at 3:30pm after a long flight that ran out of meals. Hadn't eaten in 12 hours.
I asked the beautiful woman at the front desk where I could eat.
“Our restaurant doesn't open until 6pm.”
Is there anywhere else I can go?
Can I rent a scooter?
“No, the rental people left 30 minutes ago. They'll be back tomorrow.”
Can I rent a bike? A car? Anything? Any other solution?
Is there anywhere else I can rent a scooter or bike? Some place I can call?
Is there anywhere to eat within walking distance? Anything at all?
Really? There's absolutely nothing anywhere near here that has food?
I go to the restaurant and ask if they have anything. A piece of bread? A peanut?
So they show me to my room (#26). It was described as “pool view” but I can't see the pool unless I stick my head out the window. It's clearly the worst room in the place. It's right on the highway by their sewage processing, and the smell of toilet water was wafting up into my room, with the sound of whizzing cars and trucks, and occasional airplane (it's near the airport). In America, this would be a $80 room. In New Zealand, maybe $150. Here, it's $350. It was the last available room, so I can see whey they book it last. It's pretty awful.
So I sit and wait two hours until 6pm, when their restaurant opens.
At 6pm I go to their restaurant, starving. They seat me at a little romantic 3-person table, and tell me I'll be sitting with a couple. Oh. Drag. But at least I can eat! OK, so where's the food?
“Sorry I think the food won't be ready until 7.”
I say nevermind and go for a walk on the beach.
I have nothing nice to say. I'm furious at the service I received.
