My travel partner of over 180,000 worldwide miles picked Chez Jerome with confidence for a 4 day stay on Easter Island, based on reviews from the internet.
That confidence quickly eroded because:
1. We were not met at the airport (there are only 2 inbound flights daily ( day and evening) to such a remote location- Easter Island . The Chez Jerome staff obviously did not read our advance email, informing them of our evening (10:30PM) arrival.
2. When we arrived, via taxi, at Chez Jerome, the staff greeted us as if we were intruders. The lady who spoke to us stated she did not know when we were arriving that day. The lady ( owner?) rushed us to our room, located at the back of the property. Upon entering, the room's temperature was very near 90 degrees, yet it was only about 70 degrees outside. When we commented the heat was not tolerable, especially for an island known for its tropical , cool breezes, we were shown to a larger room next door. That room was larger, but the same temperature. There were no overhead ceiling fans in either room, so we requested a portable fan, which was promptly provided. After the lady hurried off, and upon closer inspection of our room, we realized there were no screens on any of the windows or sliding glass doors. Many cats were scattered about the property , and had access to our room. We could not get any fresh air or cross ventilation as we had to leave the sliding glass doors completely shut at all times, to avoid the cats. The atmosphere in the room was literally dismal and stifling. The very poor quality/cleanliness of linens, pillows , mattress, and cheap, bubble- less soap just added to our dismay.
3. After a most difficult night's sleep - or lack thereof- due to a very noisy portable fan, we were ready for breakfast by 8:30. If the health department could have seen the how the "breakfast" was presented, they would have had to work overtime issuing violations .
