Stephen's house is some way from the bus station, but as he fetched us it did not matter, and then we used the local buses from very nearby. The house is near the railway, but the noise didn't bother us. It was cold in January, but the heater in the room worked well.
As in other reviews, Stephen and his wife were charming, interesting and terribly kind and helpful hosts. His wife cooked super dinners for us on 3 days (for 40 RMB), which was lovely after a long day out, and with fresh veg straight from the garden these were some of the best meals we had in our month in China.
The room was fine and the bathroom spotless and modern and with a pedestal loo.
Stephen was most interesting and knowledgeable on all sorts of topics, as he reads widely, does calligraphy, learns languages etc. He also fetched us from the bus station for free, and advised us on the mountain trip, and sorted a day trip to Xidi and Hong Cun (Unesco world heritage sites).
We felt really at home in his home, and would return there if we had a chance.
