Super friendly and helpful staff, they arranged trips for us very late in the evening. If we had some questions, they always helped us a lot. They can also speak English The sink was blocked up the first night, but they fixed it the day after

The beds and room were very comfortable and nice. Besides, the hotel is located very closely to Jingshan Park and the exit gate of the Forbidden City. What's more, the staff were friendly and helpful. Moreover, the lift brought us very quickly to our floor. The breakfast was ok, but please come early otherwise almost all the food will be gone as they don't refill the buffet till 9 It was a pity that there was no Wi-Fi whatsoever at our room. Furthermore, it was very difficult to find a taxi near our hotel. In addition, the taxis didn't want to bring us back to our hotel, probably due to the fact that the hotel is too close to the city centre. It is, however, to far to walk.

Quiet location - don't be put off by the back-alley look. Just a walk away from Forbidden City & Tiannamen Square. Large double bed hard by uk standards but very comfortable for us. Beijing Airport has few facilities, and only one over-priced cafe. Air conditioning controlled by reception - heating on until April 1st whether we wanted it or not! Eventually managed to turn the system off though room still to hot for us. Don't get caught out by taxi/tuktuk/rickshaw over pricing. Hail a cab and ensure they put the meter on.

It's a few minutes walk from Jingshan Park (with amazing views of the Forbidden City) and just a little more to Beihai Park. 5 minutes walk from the North exit of the Forbidden City and 30 minutes to the Southern entrance and Tian' anmen Square at a leisurely pace. Also not too far from Nanluoguxiang Lane with shops, great restaurants and bars and only 20 minutes walk from Wangfujing Shopping Street. Being so close to the centre means that a quick taxi ride gets you to most of the sights in Beijing. Friendly, helpful staff and modern clean rooms with access to wired Internet, printers etc. Fantastic food from the restaurant and within 5 minutes walk of small 3 local convenience stores. Although being right in central Beijing, Shatan Street is very quiet and has a lot of old yet modern character in itself.

The hotel was well situated for walking to the Square, Forbidden city and parks. The room was a suite for a very good price and extremely quiet considering where we were situated. Very comfortable bed and pillows for China! If your not super fussy, this is a well located hotel. English at the reception was good and. We were able to leave our bags on the last day till our flight. There was a strong smell of cigarettes in the halls but the room was okay. I think you would find this in a lot if Beijing hotels. After having breakfast the first morning we decided to wander 50 meters to a corner coffee shop and had a great Western Breakfast.

location superb, within walking distance of Forbidden City. Excellent restaurant, beautiful food at suprisingly reasonable prices, however restaurant staff spoke almost no English. Very good breakfast at low cost. Front desk staff efficient, helpful and with good English. city tour operator based in the hotel lobbly had good selection of tours at prices not much more expensive than operators on the street.

The position of the Shatan hotel was excellent. So close to the beautiful Jingshan park which has great views overlooking the forbidden city. Beijing is so big that walking from place to place can be time consuming & tiring but the girls at the front desk were a great help with instructions on which buses to catch & where from (The girls on the front desk were not fluent in English so it took some time explaining our needs but they always took time to try to understand ) The street that the Shatan is in, is quaint & full of vendors selling local produce and street eats. Walking tours visit the street all the time. The shatan hire out bikes free of charge with just a 100rmb deposit per bike. The bikes have built in locks but keep the deposit slip for return of your deposit upon return of the bikes.Beijing's flat streets & designated bike lanes are made for bike riding although at times a little scary with all the cars etc darting from lane to lane and at times using the bike lanes. The rooms were small but adequate with air conditioner, hot water and hbo channel on the tv. The rooms at the shatan looked a little tired and the hallways at times smelt a little damp & smoky. We got our laundry done at the shatan, which although expensive was a necessity due to our 6 days there. On check out we were accused of taking one of the laundry bags and were told to pay for it, which we refused.

The location is ideal for trips to Forbidden City and surrounding, close to bus stops and easy taxi rides to Hutong and Ghost Street. Close to convenient stores and food stalls, and the rooms are clean. Drinking water should be provided free of charge.
