-very oriental hotel -stay with local residence -very helpful and friendly staffs -free entertainment on shadow performance
-very dirty bathroom and dark -cab will not come into the area due to small and tight street
Beautiful hotel with traditional and artistic interior, great location, very friendly and helpful staff, fantastic breakfasts and great coffee
poor internet (WiFi), lack of English (at least one) channel in TV
nice location for city tour, very friendly staff, nice breakfast, very good service
location is fantastic. Friendly, stylish, comfortable, authentic.
Staying in the Hutongs and central location
Breakfast starts at 7am, would be convenient if earlier for those booking tours and travelling on business
The local experience of the location. Handy to everything!
The hotel is beautiful: lobby, and rooms, and shadow-art fugires on the walls. We watched (and even participated) the shadow show on our last evening, it was very meditative and fun. Breakfast is nice and tasty (and good coffee!) The staff was helpful: we had some difficulties with documents, and they were doing everything to help. The day we came the reception girls explained all about neighbourhood (in Chinese, i don't know about their English, but other guests were talking to them in English, i think), gave us the map. When we were leaving (past midnight), they called us a taxi right to the door (though normally taxi drivers don't want to get into hutong, streets are too narrow) and so on. Neighbourhood is special: very close to the Houhai lake in the middle of hutong (hutong... It depends on person: you may or may not like it. I did). Plenty of places to eat nearby (if you're good with cheap chinese food like noodle soup for example).
15 min walk from the metro station may be a bit long at the end of a tiresome day. Breakfast choice is limited. Our room had a window to the corridor, and sometimes i felt boxed-in beacuse of it. The room was very good and clean, except for the dust in one corner. Wi-fi is unstable - sometimes ok, sometimes very poor.
Location might not be convenience to some people because it is deep inside the hutong area but it exactly is why I chose this boutique hotel to feel the old Beijing. The neighbourhood is friendly and cozy, pity that I didn't have enough time to explore this lovely area.
I travelled at peak season the better and bigger rooms on 2nd floor were fully booked so I stayed on the ground floor (which actually is the basement). My room was small with a so-called window, no natural light at all. Wasn't impressive. Bed was okay. Wifi was terrible in my room. Worst thing was the smell from the bathroom... I did understand the underground water system might be getting old around this hutong area but I really did not expect such stink and what more were the bugs and flies coming from god-knows-where... Hope the hotel keeper could pay more attention and improve on this part.
Perfect to experience beijing in the hutongs. Close to subway and lakes district, restaurants etc. Staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast was good.
Some maintenance required in room, cupboard door hinge broken, drainage in shower poor and paint peeling from wall, dirty marks on wall.
Modern in a old neighourhood with helpfull and friendly staff
Location is great but you have to understand that it is a boutique hotel in a preserved and old neighborhood in Beijing so narrow streets and dark alleys would be normal (China is extremely safe) It is close to a subway station and near bars and restaurants. If you don't know any chinese I would recommend you to get an offline map in your cel so that you could go around. I would also recommend that if you get to Beijing by air or but train, try to have the hotel pick you up. Worse case scenario you would need to call the hotel and put the taxi driver on the phone with reception.
Nice hotel in the Hutongs, ideal for travels who want to feel the ambiance of the old Beijing quartiers. Clean, quiet and relaxing hotel.
The breakfast buffet is quite simple but allows you to start well your day in the patio .
-staff, very helpful -acitivities like shadow puppet shows or painting for children -the library in the courtyard -each room has an individual chinese theatre character, care for detail -the hutong neighborhood, no big roads, nice for walking or taking a rikshaw, close to the waterfront.
Our room here was by far our favorite in China. Large, comfortable, and with great wifi. The shadow puppet show and master present was an amazing experience. We saw the show, painted our own puppets, and really enjoyed our stay thoroughly. We hope to one day come back!
nice location，kind staffs, and the free drink the offer is excellent. Nicely decorated
Horrible wifi, don't choose here if you need to use the internet a lot. Some of the rooms have no window and they smells.
The staff was very helpful, even though they don't speak English very well. The room & bathroom were quite big. I loved the decor. One of the ladies walked us to the main road when we checked out and helped us get a taxi. It took a while and she was willing to take us to where we were going in her own car. 10 points for that.
The location was too much of a culture shock. Its located in the Hutong's and took our driver forever to find. Taxis will drop you off on the main road and you will have to find your own way as the streets are VERY narrow. The Wifi is terrible in the rooms, the breakfast quite bad. There is no room service and when we asked to order from other restaurants in the area the menus were in Chinese. The TV doesn't have any English channels. We were booked for 4 nights but only stayed 1 night. If its your first time in Beijing I would recommend staying in the city as this hotel will ruin your experience of Beijing, which would be a shame.
the position right in the middle of the famous Hutongs is just perfect if you want to experience the most traditional chinese life
the fact that taxi drivers don't want to drive you to the hotel but will mostly leave you about 1 km away due to the difficulty of moving in the Hutongs.
The human "touch" - they were the best staff I've ever met in hotels/ They even took responsability for false 300Yuen that we'd received, and we're not sure that they we're given to us by them. When we had Wi Fi problems they sent a specialist to put some special device in our room, so the problem disappeared immediatly.
This hotel is quite beautiful and is located in the Hu Tongs in Beijing. It is really easy to walk to Houhai Lake and Beihai Lake. The shadow art show is cute. The breakfast is simple but good and filling. The staff were also very helpful with everything we needed.
Clean, friendly and helpful staff. They spoke excellent english! Wonderful location.
We had a group of parents with children so it was noisy. However the staff were very apologetic.
the lobby is really traditional and artsy, the shadow show is absolutely impressive!!
This was my second hotel during my stay in China. Small but charming lobby with shadow puppets show every 2 or 3 days which is nice addition. Stuff speak English well which is not common. They are helping in every matter. Small and charming hotel in Hutong area close to night bars at the Houhai lake. The surroundings looks not perfect but Beijing is very safe place to walk even during night. So do not worry at all. Charming place.
Rooms are clean but small and without windows. You can not control air-conditions in your room. Breakfasts were a little bit disappointing although it was a variety of European and Chinese style but cold. Compare to a big Inter Continental Beichen I was a little bit dissatisfied.
As it is a 10min walk to the nearest metro, walk to Ping'Anli metro via Huguosi Street, its a lively street full of locals going about their day to day business, lots of cheap eats and street food, good people watching Front desk staff very helpful, especially Sarah Hotel is located in the hutongs so if you want a local experience of what its like to live in Beijing then definitely book here Excellent wifi
10 min walk to/from metro Lighting in bathroom could've been better No windows in ground floor rooms, this wasn't advertised on the site at time of booking Taxi's don't like to drop you off at the premises as you have to drive through the hutongs (narrow streets) so be prepared to walk from the main street, its is safe to walk but as a solo female traveller I was a bit nervous walking to hotel late at night
The art! The staff was amazing!
I didn't know they had a shadow puppet play and had already booked up that time! I was sad to miss it but I will just have to return!
