Loved the location. It is in a quaint neighborhood where you really get to experience what it's like to be in a non-touristy area, and it's fairly close to a park, the Houhai Lake and a bustling area around the lake a bit further down called Shichaihai. They offered amazing hot plum tea in these cute cups and the breakfast is phenomenal, with both Chinese and American/European fare. Also, the lobby so cozy. It was so inviting to step into the warm lobby after walking throughout the city, and to have a relaxing glass of wine. The emphasis on Shadow Art is also very intriguing and a great chance to learn more about Chinese culture. Also loved the architecture and art inside. Staff were helpful.
While I understand that the hotel is really trying to emphasize the preservation and education of Shadow Art, it felt lacking in other important areas, like quality of the rooms. For example, the walls were dirty and I could hear commotion in the lobby from my room, in the early morning, which was distracting while trying to sleep. I also didn't like not having a window in the room and overall, the room felt very basic and standard. It didn't feel as warm and inviting as the lobby; it felt more like just a place to sleep. Also, the bathroom was slightly dirty. Still, pros outweigh the cons for this hotel!
Don´t get the promnotional room. It´s so small, windowless and you could hardly get any wi-fi and cell phone signal. Their employees are poorly trained and the "Piying show" is just a 3-times-a-week-product-selling presentation that lasts not more than 10 minutes (well, at least the presentation is nice to see). Although it´s well located in the central area of Beijing, I wouldn´t recomend people with big baggages to go (you´ll find why..they don´t even have an elevator) and in rush hours, you won´t find any cab willing to pick you up. Actually, all the taxi drivers hated the place because it´s in the middle of narrow little streets almost impossible to reach by car.
Beautiful boutique hotel in unique artisan part of Beijing.
The location is hard to find with the taxis and although not far on the map to main landmarks, taxis almost impossible in rush hour
The decor of the public areas of the hotel was really awesome and gave it an incredible, authentic ambiance. I also really liked that it was just a few minutes' walk from Houhai Lake.
The breakfast was pretty basic and, in fact, on the last day, shrunk by more than half from its already small size. Additionally, while the hotel is very convenient to Shichahai, it's a bit far from the nearest metro station and also, from the nearest street large enough to accommodate a taxi. Finally, I wish my room had had a window.
we liked the location, the charm of the hotel, in taste traditional Chinese sophisticated.
The first bedroom had no windows to the outside and for us is unacceptable hygienic standpoint. We changed for a small fee, but we loved it.
Hutong and the athmosphere
That taxi didn t want go in the narrow street everytime complicate t get back at night and each Tayi driver do not now
I like the atmosphere
The room equipment is poor quality and not good to use and the air conditioning is not working plus the breakfast was tasteless
-very oriental hotel -stay with local residence -very helpful and friendly staffs -free entertainment on shadow performance
-very dirty bathroom and dark -cab will not come into the area due to small and tight street
Beautiful hotel with traditional and artistic interior, great location, very friendly and helpful staff, fantastic breakfasts and great coffee
poor internet (WiFi), lack of English (at least one) channel in TV
nice location for city tour, very friendly staff, nice breakfast, very good service
location is fantastic. Friendly, stylish, comfortable, authentic.
Staying in the Hutongs and central location
Breakfast starts at 7am, would be convenient if earlier for those booking tours and travelling on business
The local experience of the location. Handy to everything!
The hotel is beautiful: lobby, and rooms, and shadow-art fugires on the walls. We watched (and even participated) the shadow show on our last evening, it was very meditative and fun. Breakfast is nice and tasty (and good coffee!) The staff was helpful: we had some difficulties with documents, and they were doing everything to help. The day we came the reception girls explained all about neighbourhood (in Chinese, i don't know about their English, but other guests were talking to them in English, i think), gave us the map. When we were leaving (past midnight), they called us a taxi right to the door (though normally taxi drivers don't want to get into hutong, streets are too narrow) and so on. Neighbourhood is special: very close to the Houhai lake in the middle of hutong (hutong... It depends on person: you may or may not like it. I did). Plenty of places to eat nearby (if you're good with cheap chinese food like noodle soup for example).
15 min walk from the metro station may be a bit long at the end of a tiresome day. Breakfast choice is limited. Our room had a window to the corridor, and sometimes i felt boxed-in beacuse of it. The room was very good and clean, except for the dust in one corner. Wi-fi is unstable - sometimes ok, sometimes very poor.
Location might not be convenience to some people because it is deep inside the hutong area but it exactly is why I chose this boutique hotel to feel the old Beijing. The neighbourhood is friendly and cozy, pity that I didn't have enough time to explore this lovely area.
I travelled at peak season the better and bigger rooms on 2nd floor were fully booked so I stayed on the ground floor (which actually is the basement). My room was small with a so-called window, no natural light at all. Wasn't impressive. Bed was okay. Wifi was terrible in my room. Worst thing was the smell from the bathroom... I did understand the underground water system might be getting old around this hutong area but I really did not expect such stink and what more were the bugs and flies coming from god-knows-where... Hope the hotel keeper could pay more attention and improve on this part.
Perfect to experience beijing in the hutongs. Close to subway and lakes district, restaurants etc. Staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast was good.
Some maintenance required in room, cupboard door hinge broken, drainage in shower poor and paint peeling from wall, dirty marks on wall.
Modern in a old neighourhood with helpfull and friendly staff
Location is great but you have to understand that it is a boutique hotel in a preserved and old neighborhood in Beijing so narrow streets and dark alleys would be normal (China is extremely safe) It is close to a subway station and near bars and restaurants. If you don't know any chinese I would recommend you to get an offline map in your cel so that you could go around. I would also recommend that if you get to Beijing by air or but train, try to have the hotel pick you up. Worse case scenario you would need to call the hotel and put the taxi driver on the phone with reception.
Nice hotel in the Hutongs, ideal for travels who want to feel the ambiance of the old Beijing quartiers. Clean, quiet and relaxing hotel.
The breakfast buffet is quite simple but allows you to start well your day in the patio .
-staff, very helpful -acitivities like shadow puppet shows or painting for children -the library in the courtyard -each room has an individual chinese theatre character, care for detail -the hutong neighborhood, no big roads, nice for walking or taking a rikshaw, close to the waterfront.
Our room here was by far our favorite in China. Large, comfortable, and with great wifi. The shadow puppet show and master present was an amazing experience. We saw the show, painted our own puppets, and really enjoyed our stay thoroughly. We hope to one day come back!
nice location，kind staffs, and the free drink the offer is excellent. Nicely decorated
Horrible wifi, don't choose here if you need to use the internet a lot. Some of the rooms have no window and they smells.
The staff was very helpful, even though they don't speak English very well. The room & bathroom were quite big. I loved the decor. One of the ladies walked us to the main road when we checked out and helped us get a taxi. It took a while and she was willing to take us to where we were going in her own car. 10 points for that.
The location was too much of a culture shock. Its located in the Hutong's and took our driver forever to find. Taxis will drop you off on the main road and you will have to find your own way as the streets are VERY narrow. The Wifi is terrible in the rooms, the breakfast quite bad. There is no room service and when we asked to order from other restaurants in the area the menus were in Chinese. The TV doesn't have any English channels. We were booked for 4 nights but only stayed 1 night. If its your first time in Beijing I would recommend staying in the city as this hotel will ruin your experience of Beijing, which would be a shame.
the position right in the middle of the famous Hutongs is just perfect if you want to experience the most traditional chinese life
the fact that taxi drivers don't want to drive you to the hotel but will mostly leave you about 1 km away due to the difficulty of moving in the Hutongs.
