Colourful and historic, modern and colonial, local and touristic, Cartagena de Indias represents one of the liveliest Colombian beach resorts. Its character mixes cultures and peoples, including natives, Spanish, African and Arab. Its rich legacy granted its Old Town the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When the Spanish founded the city in 1533, the region had already been inhabited for thousands of years. It became an important port for the Spanish gold and a significant political centre. Echoes of those times can be seen throughout the historic centre, in the city walls, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, and the colourful streets and colonial squares. Cartegena has so much culture and history. The food was fantastic! There is live music in every restaurant and bar. Traditional dancing can be found in the squares and you just need to tip. Just be aware of all the street hustlers, especially the rappers who will follow you. The old town comes alive after 8pm. Be prepared for the 90-100% humidity during the mid-day. It is best to site see early in the morning or evening and siesta or pool lounge during the mid day.

The "Old City" is beautiful and historic - and has excellent gelato! Unfortunately, no Dr Pepper...
The beaches are good, and provide a diversion (or a primary reason to go, if you are young) and a completely different atmosphere.

Lots to do if you work with local tourist agents.
Lots to do if you work with local tourist agents. Leave the area and go to Baru for glowing plankton or boats to Rosario archipelago. Old town. Watch out for street vendors selling trinkets and being too pushy.

A lot of great food options, best seafood in Colombia.
A lot of great food options, best seafood in Colombia.
Our favorites:
- La Cevicheria
- La Mulata
- Cafe del Mar ( bit pricey for what it is, but worth it for the sunset drinks )
- El baron ( great tapas in the middle of the square )
Town with a rich history and lots of important landmarks and sights to visit. Great colonial architecture, colorful streets and lively people.
It is very touristic, with a lot of locals non stop trying to sell/push tours/restaurants and goods on the street, felt a bit like India sometimes. There are great street performances of dance groups and artists happening, which i enjoyed a lot though!

Great place to visit as long as you don't mind being harrassed non stop by street vendors trying to sell you hats, cigars, sunscreen, tchotchkes and other things, having menus constantly thrown in your face or being honked at by multiple cab drivers if you stop on a sidewalk for even a second wanting to know if you need a ride. Everything worth seeing in Cartagena can be seen in one day, two tops if you want to see some places out side the city

Hotel Boutique Bovedas de Santa Clara is perfectly located in the Ciudad Amurallada of Cartagena. This is the place to stay if you want to be at the heart of everything but with enough privacy and comfort. The facilities along with Sofitel Legend are basically the very best in Cartagena, the staff is amazingly kind and helpful, especially German and Osman. Rooms are huge and the balcony will definetely take your breath away. Breakfast at Legends Santa Clara (which was included) it´s top tier and more like a brunch, TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Very good location of the hotel, in a very quite street but close to all important sites. Extremely comfortable room, big, bright, with nice balcony, extremely comfortable beds and pillows, nice bathroom, really boutique style, because the hotel has only few rooms and guests are treated like very special persons. Breakfast served personally. The hotel staff is increadibly kind and helpful and friendly. Special thanks to Mr John and Jeimy for kindest and professional service and Mrs Luisa for mouthwatering breakfast.
The staff all around (Aldolfo, in particular, I believe was his name) is amazing. Everyone is kind, very courteous, and helpful. The hotel staff arranged for a PCS Covid test for me at the hotel prior to my departure. And that went well. There was always good amenities (pool area, full breakfast, towels and bathroom items).
Location is superb. A few blocks walking from Old Town and Getsmania areas where the nightlife is at. Wonderful historic plazas and buildings all around, a real old colonial feel.
The decor of this hotel is amazing. I've visited Cartagena before and love the vibe of these small boutique hotels. The bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was super helpful in obtaining reservations for us throughout our stay, brokering the charter of a boat, and we even ate dinner from the hotel restaurant in a private room one night. The breakfast was perfect and there was a lot of variety. We visited in a group of 8 and we all absolutely loved our stay.
Very comfortable and well equipped room, with a great view across the rooftops of Cartagena, giving it a luxurious feel. Responsive and friendly staff via a dedicated WhatsApp chat. Simple check in and out and a proper boutique feel to the hotel.
Excellent roof terrace and plunge pool (in the Penthouse suite), given Cartagena's humidity. Lots of great touches both in the room and around the hotel. Excellent location for accessing Cartagena's old city.
Our room had a really good view of the sea and the pool. The breakfast was very good and had variety. I arrived with an inflamed sciatic nerve and the personnel at the buffet volunteered and provided assistance immediately. Great fresh fruit and Colombian coffee . The location made it possible to get to town, to the airport quickly and cheaply on Uber. So we enjoyed the beach right outside the hotel and sightseeing with hop-on hop-off buses.
Lovely hotel in front of Castillo de San Felipe. Room was very spacious, comfortable bed and nice bathroom with walk-in shower. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is at walking distance from the city (apr. 500m.) but you get around very easy with a taxi. Shopping "Mall Plaza" is just on the backside of the hotel (5Om) where taxi's drive by all the time. Breakfast was simple, but good.
Love that it is centrally located one block from the Plaza Aduana, San Pedro Claver and the lush Plaza de Bolivar and Palacio de la Inquicision. Love the courtyard style architecture with a modern twist. Very comfy beds and spacious suite with kitchen and laundry. And quite a terrific and quiet rooftop pool with fabulous views over the roofs of the historic Cartagena.
THE HOTEL IS A CLASSIC IN CARTAGENA. HIS OLD FASHION MODE IS REALLY COOL FOR A PLACE THAT IS FULL OF HISTORY AND TRADITION LIKE THIS HOTEL. THE ROOMS SHOULD BE SOMELIKE REFURBISHED SPECIALLY THE AIR CONDITIONER A LITTLE BIT NOISY . THE STAFF IS VERY ATTENTIVE AND THE OPEN AREAS AROUND THE SWIMINGPOOL ARE VERY ENJOYABLE AND BEATIFULL .
The staff are very nice and supper helpful, they really tried their best to make the stay enjoyable. There is a jacuzzi on the roof-top of the hotel, which you can get a very nice view of Castillo San Felipe. The hotel also offers free juices which really helps to cool you down, considering the weather in Cartagena is very hot.
The room was really lovely, staff was supportive, the little pool on the roof was refreshing, the location was just perfect, simple, but tasty breakfast, very quite place in a busy street, super comfortable beds, fresh water available, the green program. I give 10, as this was the nicest hotel in Colombia we had.
The breakfast was really good at Hotel Kartaxa. The staff was friendly and eager to help with luggage or any questions we had. The location is amazing right in the middle of the old city, with loads of restaurants, bars, a market, and a beautiful mall all within walking distance.
The hotel is in an excellent location for enjoying the night life of Getsemani and for visiting the old city and fortress. The facility is secure with buzz in entrance and exit. The air conditioning was very good. Nice hot shower.
The hotel is right next to the Castle San Felipe de Barajas, 15 minutes from the old city. Breakfast was good enough -- not something unbelievable, but pretty good.
