Located in the northern shore of San Andrés Island, Caribbean Island Hotel features free WiFi access and is set 100 metres from the commercial and financial districts of the island.
Score from 70 reviews Very good
The owners and staff were number one. Very friendly knowledgeable and helpful. The breakfast was included in price and was always very good. Would also recommend dinner here. Food was excellent. Good frequent cheap transportation by local bus right out front.
There is the option of hot water showers. Would not bother with this. Showers had extremely low volume and were either too hot or cold. The truth is you do not need hot water. This is a hot climate and a shower with water about the same temperature as the pool is just fine.
Close to snorkelling, quiet location, the owners veeeeeery nice people
Small bathroom, poor breakfast, no privacy in room, many people from dive school right at our windows.
I enjoyed everything and will stay there again, whenever I return to San Andres!
This is a quaint place (Hotel/Motel) to stay in San Andres Island, Colombia. It is a family run business, where everyone is very friendly and ready to cater to your needs, even if they are not part of a normal stay (we got food poisoning in a downtown restaurant). The place has about 20 rooms, with basic beds, cable TV, shower, and a small table with chairs. They offer free Wi-Fi, but we found it weak for video. Breakfast was included. They also offer lunch and dinner a la carte. The food was good and the prices fair. The hotel has a small (good for the size of the hotel) but nice pool. The hotel faces west so you can appreciate the sunsets every afternoon, hence the name. The clear waters of the ocean (no beach) is right across the street. It is great for snorkeling or scuba diving. The place has a scuba shop on-site with good prices. The place offers motorcycle rentals. All personnel is very friendly. I will return sometime.
My only complaint if you will about the hotel itself, was that the beds were a little hard. The showers work with an electrical system that has 3 settings, cold, warm, hot. We found the warm too hot. The hotel/motel is located on the opposite side of the island. The airport, beaches, restaurants, clubs, etc. are in downtown, about 30 min drive. If you ride a motorcycle at night (like we did sometimes) you drive through some areas that don't look too good on one side of the island, or through complete darkness on the other side. Buses are erratic on their schedule, sometimes it takes more than an hour to see one. At night they are very crowded. Buses stop running about 8:30 PM. The island is very unkempt, I understand that it is because of a dispute with Nicaragua.
Sunset is a family-run hotel and Lindsay makes every effort to make you feel like home. We had the chance to meet such nice people at the common area that we became friends. Sunset had the fun of a hostel with the comfort of a hotel.
We had some problems with the showers. First it wasn't warming up and they managed to change our room, but in the last day the shower broke again.
The entire staff was wonderful. They responded quickly and efficiently to every request - and always friendly! Also, the food was great!
The location was well away from the beaches and central part of the city - great for diving, but a little inconvenient for other activities. The facilities in the room lacked drinking water or glasses - you had to ask for a glass (plastic cup) and pay extra for water - tap water is not safe to drink there.
Nice Room, Very kind hosting family where you feel at home, good food and drinks. Dive center Sharky on the spot. Perfect arrangement to have a massage. Quiet and beautiful place to relax. Moto/bike rental. English speaking staff. For San Andres the price/quality is normal.
Nice beaches and San Luis/center of the island are a long way, though it is great to do it by bike. Buses don't go at night. Taxi's are kind of expensive (but this is more a problem of the island). Bikes were old, which should be in good shape because of safety facility and nice way to discover the island.
The location, the hotel is in front of the best diving spots in the island. Amazing sunsets. The staff is super helpful, and friendly.
Location was away from the hustle and bustle of the main centre. Well presented and comfortable
There are no restaurants within walking distance. The closest restaurant closes quite early so we had to eat at the hotel's restaurant which had fairly ordinary food.
A great family run place that truly went above and beyond helping us enjoy our stay in San Andres Island. The resturant served great tasting food and Sharkys dive shop, attached to the hotel, had new equipment, a nice boat and great instructors! Highly recommended place and were really happy we did not end up on any other part of the island.
The hotel is right in front of the ocean so it is perfect for diving/snorkeling. It takes about 25 minutes from the airport, away from the busy downtown, which is very quiet and good for relaxing. The food is good and the breakfast is included which is great for the money. Internet is quite reliable; I was able to VPN into my office in the US within 150ms latency. The owner speaks English well (US grads), very friendly and they went the extra miles to help you (I had a very rare request and they were able to help me with our situation). Overall, the service is superb! Note: my wife and I arrived at night and the way to the Sunset Hotel from the airport was dark, because much of the road didn't have light, so make sure you get a taxi driver that looks local and experienced.
I hate to write in the 'didn't like' section, so I've submitted my comment to the owner to make sure that everything is taken care of, specially after the great help they did for us. I've read very good review from others, so this may only apply to the room where I stayed. Do note that the service is very good and though the amenities were minimum, it's livable and you'll like the ocean, the service and the people, if those are what you're looking for.
I enjoyed everything about the Sunset Hotel! For me, it was great to stay away from downtown and closer to the water for scuba diving. I was able to get my advanced scuba license and relax. Sunset Hotel for me was very quiet and relaxing. I also had the enjoyment of spending a lot of time with the owners, who are very nice! I highly recommend staying at the Sunset Hotel!
Welcoming and kind staff -- a family -- made this an excellent place to stay. Home-cooked breakfast each morning and lovely quiet location.
A little distant from the main beaches and entertainment district, but a regular (cheap) bus service makes this largely unimportant.
Lindsey and Claudia (the owners) and their family made us feel so welcome we stayed 3 more nights! The pool, location on the quiet side of the island and excellent snorkeling right outside the door were just what we wanted. Can't recommend highly enough. Good breakfast too.
AC in one room not working too well but was fixed.
The owner and family. All the other details pale into insignificance to the difference a friendly (and involved) owner can make. Just note the classy answers to a couple of poor reviews - this hotel experience is understated by the on-line description. If 5-star facilities is what you must have then go to Hawaii. But Sunset is the perfect hotel/location to get away from the mainstream and recharge,
The owner is a nice guy
It is not a Hotel, it is maybe a Hostel, the pictures of the rooms shown in there advertising I did not see, did not see any room with headboard, there is no SPA or restaurant, all the food is prepared in the owner kitchen, there is no beach next to the Hostel, the main problem is that to get from this Hostel to the city it is about 45 minutes by taxi if you want to eat or go to the beach, and it cost about $17.50 each way, so the real cost of one night is close to $200.00 for. Low end place on the middle of the Island far from civilization
The hotel and staff were wonderful. The hotel was in a great location for us, we were able to take walks to the blow hole, San Luis and it was a short bus ride away from San Andres centre. The pool was available 24 hours, a great way to cool down and watch the stars after an evening meal. The amenities in the hotel were excellent - there was even hot water showers if you wanted them. The owners recommended an excellent restaurant for a romantic meal and gave us lots of great advice so that we could make the most of our 3 days. The hotel had a relaxed family feel to it, the breakfasts were varied and filling, I can't wait to return!
San Andres town didn't have too much to do in the evenings, the zona rosa is pretty much closed in the week.
I enjoyed everything about this place. As a younger, solo traveler, I split my time in San Andres between the El Viajero Hostel and Sunset Hotel. For the modest increase in cost compared to the budget hostel, Sunset Hotel was a very welcome treat. The air conditioning, cable, shower/toilet all worked perfectly. Wifi was pretty reliable. My favorite aspects were chatting with the owner/family (they were delightful), the high ceilings in the rooms (stayed on the 2nd floor) and the cleanliness of the hotel/pool/diving area. Great stay.
Nothing to complain about. Everything was great. If I really try to nit-pick, I guess the lighting in the hotel room was a little dim.
First off San Andres is a duty free shopping paradise for Colombians, they flock to the beach downtown which is crowded and not unique. For a couple I would recommend only the quiet side of the Island (south/east) with Sunset at a perfect location for diving (right off the rocks across the entrance) and relaxation at the pool area. Rooms are simple but clean and functional. If you want a beach you have to hop on the local bus or rent a scooter or bike (right at the hotel) and go to the cocoplum/rocky cay or the beach at the decamaron complex close to San Luis (there is only rocks on the west of the island). Also take a boat trip to Acuario and spend the day at Haynes Cay (best fish of the Island at Bibis) I would definitely recommend diving in the clear and warm waters around the island with plenty of spots available (the hotel usually has some divers as guests so you can make friends) - Sharky Dive school has a shop right at the hotel (Roger is the son of the owner) where you can learn but he can also take you to some advance spots or just rent tanks & equipment
Avoid San Andres and Johnny Cay which are usually overrun by tourists and correspondingly also with locals trying to sell cheap stuff You can easily see the Island in few hours if you hop on a scooter (rent from the hotel) but apart from the south we found it largely underwhelming, the lagoon in the middle is a big puddle with two noisy bars (has small alligators in it) and Morgans Cave is also a tourist trap. Do yourself a favor and stay at Sunset with the friendly owners and go diving in the amazing waters of the Caribbean!
swimming pool and diving center
No transport service at night
The pool area and the snorkeling across the road. The room was also a good size.
I think the walls between rooms are very thin as I could hear people cough and a kid crying!
Excellent Hotel! Great for couples.
It`s a big island and sunset is really far from the city center (around half hour by bus, a little less by car). But I wanted tranquility and I kind linked to ride around the island. the major problem is that at night you have nothing to do and no restaurants around (the hotel has dinner service, but only until 8pm) The room is confortable and very clean, and lindsay is a really kind and helpful person. The shower is fine (little pressure, which is ok considering that the island saves water) for me, it was a great price and it was exactly what I expected. would be back for sure
We had a perfect Time in this great place close to the sea. The pool was nice too and the family very very friendly! Good Food and very good advice and organization of Car and Taxi and Diving. Thanks a lot!
It is kind of incredible place to rest, no noise to disturb you, I could say it has a deep silence, it is in front of a huge coral with no waves, as it is located away from the city center there is almost no cars crossing the road. Quite close to some great beaches with incredible blue water.
I think the breakfast has to be improved.
