In San José’s historic center, Gran Hotel Costa Rica is housed in an impressive building dating from the 1930s. It offers classically decorated rooms, a spa and a restaurant.
Score from 416 reviews Good
Featuring neo-colonial architecture, a terrace, garden and swimming pool, Hotel Colonial is located 600 metres from San José main square and 5 minutes’ walk from the National Museum.

Just a 5 minute drive from downtown San Jose, Cocoon Hotel is next to a bus stop. It features free Wi-Fi and a natural décor with bamboo walls and hardwood floors.
Score from 337 reviews Good
Great restaurant and very nice staff. The location of the hotel was perfect. It is within walking distance to downtown and in a reasonably safe neighborhood. The hotel setting was relaxing. Nice rooms.
Location is excellent, staff wonderful, great breakfast and fresh coffee any time during the night. Intimate and friendly.
- Good restaurant; - Free upgrade to spacious room with jacuzzi.
Noise of the train
I liked this hotel mainly because of the location and safe parking space. Also we got upgrade from a standard to a honeymoon type of room. It was great!
As some of reviewers mentioned, the sound of train is very noisy early in the morning (although we did not have big problems).
We like it so much that an unexpected return to San jose we stayed with them again.
The bar and computer room were be remodeled and only one employee on hand to handle the New Year's Eve rush. Restaurant should open at 6:00 am to handle the folks leaving on early morning flights.
Walking distance from museum and city center Room was quiet and hot shower working well Staff was nice and breakfast good
- Near the city center, in a nice neighbourhood. - Great wi-fi. - Good breakfast, buffet style, something that in CR was sometimes unusual. - 24h Parking
really nice rooms (stayed twice) and interior good breakfast helpful staff
heard passing train few time during the evening (but only in first of our rooms)
Everythink in our room was very old and a litle bit destroed. We had big problem with WiFi, because WiFi was working but if we want open some europe page it was not possible.
Old colonial hotel close to centre. Good value and great staff.
Cesar, along with the majority of the front desk staff were extremely gracious, professional and did their best to communicate in English, as well as patient with me attempting practicing Spanish. IF they couldn't answer a question, they always went out of their way to get it answered for us, wether it was to book a tour, Mail postcards, or get a to go breakfast if we needed to leave earlier than the hotel breakfast schedule...by the way, the food and hospitality service gets a high rating as well. Very pleased with their menu and level of service in their restaurant. The hotels ambiance is lovely, with well kept wood floors and accents, to fresh cut flowers throughout. I smiled my whole walk through this hotel, from entrance, to hallway, to stairwells, to mini-courtyard, and sky views and bathrooms. Even the attention to detail on a slide window in the bathroom was smile producing. Value for money, this hotel has it all. Rob and I would stay again for sure, we were both in agreement that this was an excellent way to end our two week travels in Central America. Service, ambiance, and overall contentment for any traveller.
The extra pillows looked like they had been used and put back in the bags in the closet. Perhaps a miss by housekeeping, but front desk/Cesar, was up within minutes to exchange for fresh ones, along with a humble apology. The closet had a shoe odor to it, so we didn't use it, kept those doors closed. I apologize for not letting housekeeping or front desk know at the time, but otherwise, our 3 night stay was excellent. I forgot the name of our room... the rooms had names of flowers or plants instead of numbers, very whimsy! I believe our room translated into Hibiscus, in English. Very quaint.
The location was perfect, everything is near by and the breakfast.
I surprised how this place got 8 rating, I stayed for 2 nights and I am an easy camper. When I arrived they gave me the 1st that was next to receptionist, 2nd room was next to the dining room, until eventually I asked for higher level room with ancient fan and tv (the room has only 1 window facing the hallway and it's located right in front your bed, so people can see your face while you are in bed) Also, I could hear every single thing from my room such as people walking, talking (you name it) and the Train (fine, train stops at 8.30pm) then, I could hear the loud noise from the bar behind my room until midnight. 2nd day was the worst, I had a friend visited in the afternoon and I took him to my room to drop his backpack before we went out. Then, the phone ring from the receptionist asking if my friend was going to stay with me tonight, I said no. Then, she told me that we can't be inside my room. I asked why, she couldn't answer and gave me 5 sec hold (speaking in spanish in background) she told me it's part of the policy, because I paid for 1 person. where was this policy written??? I assumed the issue was more about homophobic issue. Should they mentioned this in the beginning, I rather find another hotel and paid more if I have to. In fact there was a cheaper option and I chose this hotel expecting there was AC but the weather was bit chilly so I didn't need it. Sad I had to end my trip with these issues.
Location, staff. It's a cosy hotel with very intetesting interior design.
The noise, but not so much from the outside but from the guests who eve at 3.00 a.m. If departing shout, laugh, bang the doors with no respect towards those who try to sleep. I wpuld suggest that reception staff warnes the guests that they should keep as quite as possible when departing early or however during the night.
Good breakfast. Close to city center. Nice decor.
Train traveling on the street every 5 min. Never stops horning. Qiet only 21.00-6.00 at night.
We stayed here for one night on route to Monteverde. The room was massive, it was clean and the bed was comfortable. There was also tea and coffee in the room, which was nice. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was good. Wifi worked really well downstairs, but less so in the bedrooms.
The hotel is situated right by the train line and so the noise of the train (which toots its horn every time it goes past) is very loud. But the train stops at 9.30pm and starts again at 5.30am. The shower had massive drainage issues, but because it was over a bath it wasn't a huge problem - it just meant that after a few minutes you were showering in ankle-deep in water.
Staff really friendly and helpful Good location Good breakfast Nice (simple) fair priced restaurant Public areas really spacious and pleasant with sofas, wooden panelling and pictures. Nice little sitting area outside at front.
Room OK, decent size, but nothing special - bathroom very faded There is train noise but minimised by background noise of a water feature in lobby. Train starts early, but so does the day in Costa Rica. Train noise didn't actually bother me at all - quite liked it!
The room was clean, staff is great, nice breakfast.
San José :)
We didn't have the chance to stay much, but the accomodation has been very usefull for our need. We had a right information about the time schedule bus and it was easy to get there, very good the breakfast and in really good conditions the room... Nice atmosphere .... We didn't go around it..
Slow internet.. But there is it for free.... So at the end it's good the same...
Nice atmosphere, rich breakfast buffet
Train nearby produces noise early in the morning, rooms rather small.
The architectural layout of the hotel and furnishings are unique... there are several beautiful flower arrangements and carved wood pieces that add to the feeling of calm and peace throughout the hotel. The breakfast was ample, consisting of traditional Costa Rican fare. Front desk staff were helpful and friendly.
During the two nights that we stayed, there was construction going on all night long! Of course, this is not in the control of the hotel... but is something that affected the quality of our experience, nevertheless.
Everything! Especially the gracious and considerate service. The breakfast buffet was ready early because everybody takes morning shuttles to leave San Jose, and it was really really good! San Jose itself is rather boring but at least it's safe, and there's a nifty place to eat around the corner from this hotel. Some people have mentioned train noise, but there was none of that on a Saturday night / Sunday morning.
I liked everything!
Location Breakfast Very kind and helpful staff
Like most everything. Would stay again.
There is a bus station nearby. The buses honk their horns whenever leaving the station. This occurs 24/7. Not a serious concern though.
Location was great, staff was very nice and helpful, hotel is attractive overall.
Bed was super lumpy, room shabby. Bar was under construction and closed.
