Right on the beach right in the middle of Tamarindo. Staff was excellent and the included breakfast was fantastic! You get 3 different choices and they all have something for someone. The rooms are "rustic" but my boyfriend and I aren't picky and didn't spend a whole lot of time in the room anyways.
Since the hotel is older, you do get some little ants and other small critters that can wander in the room, we had a cute little crab try to bunk with us :). It would be nice to have a bit more lighting in the room since the sun does go down pretty early, around 5:30pm.
Beautiful sunsets! Very nice breakfast made to order served right on the beach.
Our first night they gave us a room that was dark and older with exposed dirty pipes, refrigerator was missing. When we complained they moved us to a nice room. In-room safe didn't really lock, any key would open it.
The friendly staff, the location of our room was perfectly situated for beach access...we were totally hooked on the fish dishes in the restaurant the first night, and didn't eat anywhere else in Tamarindo! The great breakfasts were included with the room...can't beat dining right on the beach!
The rooms had a few design flaws such as a stair with no railing to the loft bedroom...also, when the bathroom door was open, it blocked the steps down to the sunken level.
The room was very basic but clean and quaint. I have back problems but the bed was comfotable & the room offered everything I needed. All the people who who are employed with La Palapa are very hard working, really nice and seem to really want to make your stay a happy one. There are these beautiful birds that hang out there during breakfast and love it when you share your fruit. There are cute and friendly squirrels who live around the hotel and they will eat bananas from the waiters hand. So cute! There are a family of Howler monkeys that live in the trees above the shop 2 doors down that you can see in the morning and in the afternoon around 4. They're really fun to watch and that shop happens to be great also. The restaurant at La Palapa is pretty good also and you can't beat the view! All of the rooms there are just a few feet from the beach with the same amazing view. The little town of Tamarindo is great as well. Great shopping & so many things within walking distance. I don't usually go back to the same place twice but I would absolutely go back to Costa Rica and if I went to the same area I would with out a doubt stay at La Palapa!
If you go on any tours and your main objective is to see a volcano and get pictures of one, beware. I went on the Arenal tour which was nice but did not get to see the volcano at all. Apparently it's mostly visible in the morning but they don't tell you that in the tour info. You won't get to the volcano until the afternoon. If you want to see Arenal it would probably be best to do an over night in that area which is really nice. I did the other hiking tour for the volcano near Liberia and hiked for 3 1/2 hours and never got to see the actual volcano. Very disappointing! I left wishing that I just would have saved my money from the tours and spent more time on the beach or there were 2 other tours that I heard were great. The Nicarauga tour and the boat tour where they take you to see alligators, monkeys etc. Just some advice that I wish had been given to me in the beginning.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was cleaned and serviced daily and relatively clear of bugs. Our air-con worked great with not to much noise, we had a small kitchen with refrigerator and a stove. Although the room could do with upgrading it grew on us because of the location to the beach and restaurants. We would certainly book this hotel again in the future and maybe take our family there.
There is not a lot we didn't like about the hotel. However, it could do with some upgrades if it is going to continue to attract customers. The building and the rooms need some TLC and our room needed a new patio door, because when closed, it still had an half inch gap to let in mosquitoes. Also, the room safe was a big concern because it had a weak key lock, "not a numerical code" and it was to small to fit an Ipad! So, we had to carry valuables with us. Also, the bed was very hard for my wife. If you are a lite sleeper it can be quite noisy at this location with the disco close by.
#1- the view was awesome. #2- the staff was very helpful and courteous...Rita cleaned the room,Michael and Ester waited most of the time...also the other 3 waiters did such a great job. Jose the manager made certain everything ran smooth..
LEAVING: all the wonderful people staff, help and even the Guests were fantastic! adios Larry,Patty & Mary. i have an unused ticket so that means i will be back....soon
Small, quite, excellent food and bar service. The beach is fabulous and the staff warm and friendly.
Cannot think of anything!
The staff was always helpful and cheerful. The location right on the beach in the middle of town was great. Walking right off our little patio onto the sand was great. Very relaxing.
Since we had an outdoor kitchen there were a lot of mosquitoes hanging around. That was the only negative. Deet was our friend!
I'm so happy i randomly found and booked this place. The amazing beachfront location alone makes this place completely worth it. There are only about 6 rooms in the entire hotel and each one is an ocean front room, just steps from the water. The staff is friendly and helpful with any questions you may have. They also have their own private parking if you came with a rental car. I would say this place isn't for anyone who likes "frills" and unnecessary extras in their hotel stays. The rooms are basic, but very charming with their loft style bedrooms. The hotel is also a restaurant which is in open air seating also on the beach. Expect to see a little wildlife while there. The howler monkeys frequently sleep in the trees on the property. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, and would recommend to anyone wanting an amazing location in Tamarindo
No amenities... but that didn't matter
great location right at the beach, relaxing massages, having breakfast and watching the waves...
we received the 10% guest discount in the restaurant only when we found out about it - our last day
great value location friendly helpful staff . Great beach , watch out for rocks at low tide
It was all good
The beautiful surroundings & peaceful atmosphere & great friendly staff & we love Henry!
The lighting in the bathroom was very minimal, hard to see & put on makeup! Need brighter/more lights.
The location was right in the center of town and beach and ocean is in front of your room. The bed is very comfortable. Excellent breakfast included. Good Air conditioning. Good service!
A bit dark and rustic and watch out for the mosquitoes. no Wifi in room, only in the reception and restaurant area.
The location was unbelievable! It was ideal, right on the beach. The beach is fantastic as well. Watching the water change is incredible. Also, eating breakfast with your toes in the sand and the sound of the waves nearby was priceless. It's definetly a sight for sore eyes.
We had to climb a fairly high staircase to get to our bed. It was a bit scary and both of us tripped a lot on it. But no harm done. The location was worth the occasional minor bump on the big toe.
My grown daughter and I stayed at LaPalapa May 10-16 and it was absolutely the best vacation ever!! LaPalapa was everything we expected and more. We've visited Tamarindo many times, staying primarily at the Diria but it's gotten too big and impersonal. We will visit again and will always stay at LaPalapa. The room was great; the facilities perfect; the food was outstanding; and the staff was awesome! We were treated like royalty by everyone at the hotel and knowing Tamarindo like we do, there isn't a more perfect place to stay. The hotel is in a shady grove of palm trees so it's pleasant temperature all the time and the beach is just a few steps away. Also had one of the best massages we've ever had anywhere. Just can't say enough about how wonderful LaPalapa is.
The beach front location was great, loved hearing the ocean. The bathroom in my room was decent, just a little small.
Big glass windows looking out onto the beach & incredible breakfast overlooking the ocean under the palm trees. Room was cleaned everyday and towels were replaced. Our room had a king size bed right under the A/C (perfect!). Staff was very friendly and service was great. Loved the La Palapa frozen drink! There were 3 monkeys around the hotel as well. We paid $75 during May and it was a great deal for a beachfront hotel + huge breakfast (served to you, you order from a menu). Highly recommended!
This was such a great location and pleasant surprise, I would stay again! Right on the beach, reasonable, not big!!! cute and clean.
Location right on the beach. Good breakfast.
Price did not include VAT, but VAT could be avoided if paid in cash... Restaurant was expensive and no discount was provided to hotel guests. Rooms need to be renovated. Garden was not that clean and nice.
Expensive for this price
right on the beach. pleasant staff. grounds eell kepy
only 2 bath towels per day. no hand towels or wash cloths. very dark inside cabin. neeh more lightbulbs.
Leo was amazing at knowing what tours I would be interested in. I did a sunset Catamaran trip and the Palo Verde Wetland tour that were both amazing. The staff for both tours were fun and knowledgeable. I had an amazing time! Hotel La Palapa was a great stay. I liked the room and the atmosphere. Being RIGHT on the beach was a plus. As a lone female traveler, I felt really safe on the property. I sat on the beach late at night to take in the moon setting over the ocean and never once did I feel unsafe. The restaurant/hotel staff were attentive and very professional despite my lack of Spanish. Kudos to all the staff at the hotel. I would definitely stay at La Palapa again!
The only thing I would say negative was......one day, when the regular housekeeper was off my bed sheets were not changed. Normally I would not complain about that, but with all the sand it was a bit uncomfortable sleeping. The other is, my last night there I wanted have a great dinner/happy hour and it seemed like I was forgotten about. Perhaps it was my choice of seating? I was hoping for a great seat to watch the sunset for dinner and it turned I was forgotten about. There were several parties that had more people and I guess my little bill didn't make the cut? As a former server/waitress this shouldn't matter. Every customer matters. I don't know what happened here. I had to go to the bar and ask for my check. I was never asked how my meal was or if I wanted another beverage. Once my drinks and dinner were served I was on my own.
Location was awesome.
More beach chairs or even beach umbrellas for guests would be nice.
Location, the beach within 50 feet of our room. Quiet, relaxing atmosphere, low key
the rooms were very basic, could be a little more comfortable
The hotel is right at a nice beach and has sun chairs and enough shade. The rooms are clean and the bed was comfortable. The hotel restaurant right at the beach is absolutely to recommend. The staff was very helpful.
As long as you don't expect a luxury resort this place is perfect.
