Emilio & Lulu are perfect hosts!! The breakfast was great, delicious and daily changing! Wild Macaw-.Aras are like pets here :)
Magnificant view and location. The use of natural materials of the lodges. Very friendly owners. Can book a trip to la Serena, Corcovado directly at accommodation. Very advisable!
Breakfast was poor, better to have breakfast in the village. Only cold water in the shower, but i think this is normal on this location in the middle of the rainforest.
Location is great, the view from our cabin (Eco Cabina) was amazing. Sit on the deck, watch the ocean, watch the birds in front of you. Scarlet Macaws flying by, green parrots bedding down at your doorstep every night.
Booking.com said TV, wifi and air-conditioning. None of those exist at Vista Drake Lodge. They should be removed from the website listing. We expected fairly basic - it is the rainforest, after all. But for over $100 per night, we expected some essentials. Like drinking water. The cabin water was not safe to drink, so we had to get water at reception - the cabins are all 80-100 steps up, up, up hill from the reception/breakfast area. And the bottled water at reception ran out for the last 2 days we were there. In that heat we were not pleased to have to walk 15 min up and down hills to buy our own drinking water. Food services in Drake Bay are rudimentary, yet the cabin contained only a tiny fridge. We had to buy plastic plates and spoons, salt and pepper etc. Coffee and hot water were available at Reception (when there was water) but tea bags ran out and weren't replaced. The deck is the best feature of the cabins, yet ours had one comfortable chair, and one tiny, hard, upright chair - for a cabin that sleeps 4! No chairs in the cabin at all. And if you dislike insects, this is not the place. It is the rainforest, so insects are inevitable. But there is no attempt to make the cabins insect-resistant. We just made peace with the ants for the most part, kept everything in plastic bags. We are not particularly fussy, but for the price some basics were missing.
The real nature, everything was excelent!!!
Fabulous location just a short way up the hill giving superb views over Drake Bay. Excellent bird life in trees fronting the property especially Scarlet Macaws. Breakfast on the verandah overlooking the Ocean. Emilio goes out of his way to make your stay perfect.
Absolutely nothing, this place is great.
We stayed four nights in the 2 pers cabana. The view is excellent as is the King size bed. Breakfast IS included and coffee and cold water provided (do not drink tap water). The whole place is Tico style, totally open etc. the view is what you pay for. Emilio picks you up at the beach if you come by boat!
No reading lamps, broken steps up to the cabin, although inproved with hand rail now. Noise level of chickens and dogs, road at 7 am, so bring earplugs. No save in room.
We would recommend a stay at vista drake lodges for many reasons, first it is close to the beach and town where all the restaurants and supermarkets are. You can take any number of tours from here including our favorite, snorkeling at Cano Island Emilio the owner is so friendly and helpful. The accommodations are rustic but clean and more than adequate with fans and hammocks, mosquito nets and beautiful ocean views from the balcony. We stayed in a family cottage with enough room for six. Our favorite local restaurant was close by too, Margarita's.
The walk up to our cottage at night. Need to bring a flash light or cell phone light along.
Beautifully located. Loved the hammocks, wonderfull view over the sea. Emilio is very helpful and so is the rest of the staff.
It is a lovely Tico style lodge, not fancy but comfortable, humble, and they make you feel like family! coffe and tea are available all day and even at 5 am before your tours or trips begin! Guiding is personal and every trip is different, because the weather, birds and animals are wild. This is not a Marriott, but a real Costa Rican experience! We loved everything about it!
The fact that I was able to leave.
BUYER BEWARE! We drove for two days to get to this place, and Emilio did not give us the room we booked. He gave our "chalet" that was supposed to be able to accommodate 4 according to his booking information, with AC and a view of the bay to another guest. He called around to find us another place to stay, and finally found one that had a room large enough for all of us, but when my husband asked to speak to the manager, he was told that they DID NOT have a room for us. How underhanded! Since there was no place to go, we had no choice those two nights but to cram four adult sized people into a a tiny room with a double bed and a twin. The AC was broken the first night and the sheets smelled of mildew. We weren't given fresh towels, and had to ask for everything we needed. The picture posted on his sight isn't even his property!! None of the "chalets" he has have AC, there is one community toilet for those people to share and one of them is an outdoor tent. What a joke! I wish I could post the actual pictures of his place to this site! I paid the same price for tiny, cramped room as I would have for the so called "chalet." Emilio also books tours. He charged my family more money for the same trip with a shorter stay at the park, than he charged another guest the day before! He tried to give me some line about the park charging more because our trip started there at 6 am. So did the trip the day before! Does he think I'm stupid because I am a woman? Additionally, he didn't answer my emails about the best way to get to his place, and had he, we would have spent four hours less in the car driving a VERY bumpy dirt road. Nor would we have had to book an expensive four-wheel drive. I hope the other unhappy guests that were there with us will write in save other travelers the horrible experience of staying at Vista Drake Lodge.
My husband and I stayed here for 8 nights. We loved it. The cabins are simple, but very comfortable. We had our own bathroom and a beautiful porch with a hammock. No air conditioning, but it isn't necessary. The fan was all we needed. Emilio Rodriguez and his family run this Lodge. Customer service is their number 1 priority. Emilio also made all the arrangements for 3 different trips. For each trip, he also found outstanding local naturalists/guides. I give this lodge 5 stars for outstanding service. Wifi is located in the lounge area. They also serve an incredible full breakfast as a free add-on with your lodging. The 3 trips we took were: 1) One day hiking trip with Carlos Matarrita (naturalist) near the Los Planes Ranger Station in Corcovado national Park; 2) One day trip to Violin Island with Albert Quesada, one of the owners of the Violin Island Ecolodge. We went on a hike through primary rain forest and we went kayaking through the mangrove forest; 3) Two day trip to Corcovado National Park. The first day at La Serena (stayed the night at La Serena Ranger Station) and the second day was a 23 kilometer hike to Los Patos Ranger Station. We saw Baird's Tapirs, peccaries, coatis, agoutis, and 4 species of monkeys.
Great view, owner was very helpful with arranging tours and recommending activities.
Clean room and premises. Friendly Staff.
Amazing owner. Emillio is a very nice and helpfull guy. We did three days of hiking in Cordovado Park while he was our guide. Seen a lot of wildlife because of him. The hotel is well located, only a few steps from the beach. The rooms are tidy and clean, free coffee and smoothies all day long.
