The city is fun, but...
The city is fun, but...I just spent to much time on the public transportation app. Here is what I learn that would have been most helpful for American travelers.
If all of your party has their own Visa Credit card with tap to pay feature, you are already going to have an easier time!!! It doesn't take any American Express. You have to tap to pay go on the DPO, Ostrava's public transportation. The bus police doesn't always check, but as a visitor this was persistent fear.
If you have a child, who will ride you all the time, or you have a person who doesn't have a Visa with a tap to pay feature. You must only get your bus card at the Ostrava main train station!!!! I went DPO kiosk near an Albert supermarket, as stated on the DPO website! It was not dispensing cards. The city decided to get rid of cards recently, except at the Ostrava Main Train Station!
Don't you bother to bring cash on the public transit. It doesn't take it.
Don't try to get the 3 day pay by the DPO App. The app is broken. I even uploaded an image of my kids' picture and passport, and the app still did not take any money, and did get me a pass. It take 2-3 days for them to approve the photo and passport and but the app was not letting me purchase the 3 day pass. I only know that they still had cards because I sent an email to DPO after my stay and they advised me to go to the Ostrava main train station next time. Every regular Ostrava person, I talked to said the cards are not available, but I guess they have them only in one place.

Ostrava is constantly changing for better.y first visit was back in min 1990s and it was a horrible, dirty, industrial place. Now it is green, mostly clean and fun. The former Vitkovice area refurbished, remade to an excellent art, event and historic place with that industrial background defo worth visit and other places as well.

To be honest,Ostrava was chosen as the last night of my holiday in Hungary as it was convenient for travelling to Krakow for my flight home the next day.(Yes, I know it's in the Czech Republic, but my holiday was in Hungary).
My interests are football and railways, and I knew Ostrava was an excellent destination for a railway enthusiast like myself.
As for the city itself, apart from the Forum complex, which was excellent, I didn't see anything to particularly attracr me, although it was dark most of the time, so no disrespect to the city in case I just missed its great attractions. However I am aware it is an industrial city.

Ostrava is growing up really fast!
Ostrava is growing up really fast! I have not been there for couple of years and I was surprised how many new cool places are there and how many different activities you can plan there. It is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately the local airport still does not provide any flights except only one from London and Warsaw so if you fly, like we did, you have to go from Krakow, Katowice or Prague.

Ok, so you are looking at a 300000-strong city, which was a mining / smelter / ironworks city for well over a 100 years. This entire business was shut down in the 1990s. Any critical review has to take this into account. The heritage site of Dolni Vitkovice, Landek, Bolt Tower definitely worth a visit. Check it out! The rest of the city is a mix of communist era style places and relatively few older buildings - you can still spend a day walking around the centre, along the rivers etc. Sometimes you may feel you are going back in time 30-40 years. Climbing up nearby areas (slag heap / Halda Ema?) is also something you would rarely see - and consider the environmental effect that it may have. Beers are good, mexican restaurant too!
The stuff that work for the hotel are incredible. I accidentally booked the wrong dates and they immediately help me with cancelation process. Helpful and friendly. Please have in mind they don't speak English, but this is not an issue nowa days.
Instructions they provided were clear and correct. No issue with check in and check out. Everything went super smooth.
The room was warm and nice. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was clean. It is good value for this price.
It is 3km away from the center, but we enjoyed the night walk.
The hotel is located close to the Dolní Vítkovice area (about 10 minutes walking) in a nice square (in front of St. Paul's church, Kostel Svatého Pavla), very close to bus and tram stops. The room was large and it had an inside door to reduce the noise from the corridor. The bed was comfortable and I could also use a desk to work. I had also breakfast there, which was a buffet with a wide selection of food (ham, eggs, cereals, coffee, tea, etc.). Overall I am very satisfied with the service and the price was very reasonable too.
Absolutelly stunning place!!! Hotel itself is big RETRO in US style, but in a good way of meaning! Every room decorated in different style, I stayed in Rock'n'roll, got a small bottle of their beer as welcome drink. Own brewery on site. Big choice for breakfast buffet. Definitelly come again when I am in Ostrava next time
I've visited this hotel many times and it is a solid accomodation in the center of Ostrava. The breakfast here is quite nice and rooms are clean and well equipped. I think that some of the mattresses might be soon ready for changing, but I still always sleep easily for the whole night so no need to worry about that yet.
Very nice staying at Hotel Stracena City in Ostrava. Clean and large room, with kitchen and bathroom. Great position in the city center. There is no reception (self check in). The breakfast is served in the restaurant on the ground floor of the building, also suggested for dinner!
Location was excellent for the Ostravar arena, ten minute walk and five minute tram ride away. Short walk to a shopping centre, with a variety of fast food options. Host was slightly pushed for time, but friendly. Room was clean, well furnished and comfortable.
Great breakfast with wide selection of sweet and savoury food

Nice room overall. Close to shower &toilet. Comfortable bed. Secluded from street&traffic. Good security for entrance. Very friendly &professional receptionist. Nice little kitchenette. Would consider for next visit to Ostrava.
We got the room we wanted and a quiet one on 4th floor, the room had a kettle tea and coffee and a mini bar. Everything was clean. This was our second stay in this hotel over 6 months and we enjoyed it.
