The receptionist didn't wait for me to arrive (even though I indicated my flight times in the comments fields when booking). I ended up sitting on the stairs for one hour with my suitcase in front of a locked door. Because I provided my credit card to booking.com, I was trapped--I couldn't go to a different hotel, although there are plenty around, wih one being even in the same building. When the receptionist finally showed up, he started yelling and screaming at me saying that they close the reception at 8 PM! He was extremely rude. This was the worst experience in a German hotel ever in some 15 years of travel. Under the new management, things are going down the drain. OK, they are are a budget hotel, they still have small tube TV (although I had much larger flat screen TVs in European hotels that were half that price). But what happened to checking the batteries in the remote (which remained dead during my stay) or bringing in a copy of the TV program as they used to? I understand they have no A/C, but with temperatures rising above 30C (high 90s F), how about at least a small desk fan? I nearly suffocated in my tiny room at night. Breakfast ends at 10 AM, even on weekends, while many German hotels now have it at least until 10:30 AM. Breakfast selection very limited but ok, the coffee is drinkable. However, they don't bring more food, even when breakfast time had just started--if you ask for something you know should be there, they'll bring it, otherwise they won't budge. But the idea of not having a reception open in the evening--in a major city like Hamburg, with many international flights is simply irrational. And then they start verbally abusing paying customers! I'm not coming back nor will I recommend this place to friends or colleagues.
Terrific location, close to direct bus to the train station and by U1, walking distance to city hall and many attractions. It's in the middle of a small pedestrian street with quirky shops and restaurants. I stayed there before a few years back, which is why I picked it again--only to be disappointed. It seems the management has changed and the standards have gone way down.
