I'll admit that this is not a casual review on the basis that I've known of this Hotel for 25 years plus; but as I'm an “auslander” (Irish) and remember some surprise when I first found it in pre-internet days I think it'll be valid. Gengenbach is more or less on the centreline between the Hoch and Mitteler Schwarzwald (wonderfully scenic), and is a vibrant small town. Aim directly for the Stadtmitte and you'll find quality small shops and some wine outlets that look more like art galleries – they do take their wine seriously!. Try to build in a local festival (wine or otherwise) and the centre will be cordoned off and abuzz with activity. The hotel itself is carefully hidden further up the valley beyond the pleasantly ornate drive through watch tower to the north of the Stadtmitte. I've known it under two ownerships, and I wouldn't be interested in deciding on quality changes – it continues to hit all my marks on the button. Very scenically located with great views south down the valley, and modern with good traditional styling touches. The materials used throughout cannot be faulted, and recent upgrades have maintained that high standard. German cooking styles are subject to some debate amongst travellers. Just try Pfeffer & Salz and I think the debate might be truncated. With careful integration of local materials and styles, the food is excellent and beautifully presented. The recent integration of wine production (the husband; Simon Huber) means that some of the wine choices on the menu are done on the spot. For me, the Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris, sometimes called Rulander) was excellent. Hospitality and friendliness are faultless (the fairly newly married Julia Huber), and the rooms guarantee a comfortable stay. Anyone favouring large city hotels and the (apparent) security of chains probably won't understand the delight at hunting and finding high quality famiiy run small(ish) establishments.
The staff were very friendly and efficient. The food and wine which was local dishes, was excellent. The location was quiet and near enough a nice little town to be able to walk out.
Room very pleasant, bed very comfortable, lovely quiet environment with excellent view, both to the surrounding hills and the adjacent sheep field. Fun to watch and listen to the birds in the sheep field at dusk and again in the morning. Nice breakfast with nice view. Play area for kids. Easy to find.
Advertised wifi in every room really not there. No signal in our room. Poor signal in corridor of first floor, poor signal and extremely slow wifi at breakfast in the breakfast room. Was told by reception that I could sit in the dining room/ breakfast room during the dinner hour but that was very uncomfortable. Although there is a sign to reception from the road it is unclear where to go and a bit tricky to find. The guest-rooms have a separate entrance from the outside to which a fob is provided but the lock is very tricky to work. There are lots of stairs, both from the street up to the ground floor and from that floor up to the rooms - no lift and nobody offered to help with the luggage. The car parking area fills up with restaurant guests in the evening and if returning by car it can very difficult to find a space which isn't blocking somebody else. All that said, if the wifi were reliable we would happily return.
Very nice hotel, I was happy to stay there.
Every detail of the hotel was fantastic including the restaurant with its villeroy & Bosch bazar and vmf cuttlery.
Very comfortable hotel with excellent dinner.
No lift facilities and had to carry cases up 4 fllights of stairs.
