I have previously visited Oberharmersbach, and I chose Hotel Freihof because of its central location in the village. I have a very bad knee and walk with a cane, so the location was very important to me. Hotel Freihof had a slightly higher consumer rating than Hotel Bären, which was equally centrally located in the villge.
Upon arrival, it was therefore a great surprise to us that we did not have a reservation in the hotel but were carted off to a guesthouse up a very long and very steep hill. I protested, but the owner claimed that they had no other vacancy. We had nowhere else to go, so we stayed. It resulted in many painful hikes up and down that long, steep hill every day. Breakfast was of course served at the hotel, and all the other restaurants and stores were also down in the center of the village. We did not even have a phone in our room, so that we could have communicated with the front desk of Hotel Freihof.
I feel that we were scammed. First of all, such guesthouses (there are many, many of them) at the periphery of the village are as a rule about haft the price of the hotel rooms in Oberharmersbach. The address given in the hotel listing is that of the hotel, and the management of the hotel had the obligation to consult with us of any location change, if they the hotel was full. In fact, they should not have shown vacancies on Booking.com under the circumstances. My knee suffered great pain and swelling from the many hikes up and down the long, steep hill. I would not have selected this location had I known of this ahead of time. At the very least, Hotel Freihof owes me a partial refund and an apology.
I liked of course that the place was located in beautiful Oberharmersbach village in Schwarzwald. The breakfaft was also pretty decent, and I liked the glassed-in breakfast room. The bed was pretty good, so sleeping was OK.
