A political center and favorite residence of Charlemagne, Aachen is located in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. A spa town since Ancient Roman times, it has some of the hottest springs in Europe. Its Old Town keeps important architectonic jewels, like the Cathedral ordered by Charlemagne in 786, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With a unique mix of styles, the Cathedral is the final resting place for Charlemagne’s remains, and served as coronation church for 30 German kings and 12 queens. Guesthouses and hotels in Aachen’s historic center are a romantic way of enjoying the city.
The RWTH University is one of the country’s "Universities of Excellence", part of the technologic profile of a city that is regarded as one of the most innovative in Germany. In fact, a large number of Aachen hotels have congress facilities.
It is located 40 miles from Cologne and 24 miles from Maastricht/Aachen Airport. Connections to major European capitals are available from the central train station, while several hotels nearby will help you to avoid the last-minute rush.
Whether you want to relax in the baths or come to town for a lecture, don’t miss the Aachen accommodations deals available on Booking.com!
Aachen is older than the Hungarian statehood itself.
Aachen is older than the Hungarian statehood itself. A wondrous city just next to the German-Dutch-Belgian border tripoint. I am Hungarian, and it was great to see how much it is connected to Hungary. We are about a thousand kilometres from my hometown, yet it was great to see Saint Stephen I in the garden of the cathedral, the statue of St. Ladislaus inside the Hungarian chapel. That was founded by Louis I (Louis the Great) of Hungary in the 1370s. My favourite place was the cathedral. I have also been to the tripoint itself.

We went to Aachen for the Christmas market, so we only stayed for one night. All in all, that part of our trip was worth it.
That being said, Aachen, when compared to cities of similar size, didn't leave a good impression. Especially the graffiti (not the good kind) around every corner is jarring.

Very similar to York - so praise indeed.
Very similar to York - so praise indeed.
No river or walls but a delightful, compact, walkable city centre with the ancient Cathedral and old buildings - and great pubs. Also a great base to visit Liege (Bel) and Maastricht (Ne) with which Aachen forms a triangle

The cathedral needs to be seen.
The cathedral needs to be seen. Our guide pointed out where Charlemagne sat for mass and we were able to see it close up. He also explained the significance of the shrines behind the altar. I would very much recommend the guided tour, tickets available from an information shop by the church courtyard. The Treasury contained many artifacts of interest but the recorded tour device was a little confusing and gave, probably, too much information. It was less satisfying.
The entire Aachen Innenstadt (old town) is on your doorstep with many charming restaurants and shops around the corner and in countless hidden alleys surrounding the cathedral. We had a large room and two big windows in the older section of the hotel (3 steps down not wheelchair accessible but all other rooms are). There is a modern lift. The room had everything we needed with a built in writing desk and lots of storage plus two spots to set your suitcases. Excellent breakfast buffet with lots of choices.
Best location in Aachen for historic sights, Christmas Market, shopping and restaurants. Easy walk to train station and Carolus Therme. My single room was very large with a huge bathroom which included a soaking tub. Heating worked very well. No breakfast is served at the property and the surrounding cafes do not open before 8:30. All rooms are accessed by an historic spiral stairway. Property does not have a 24 hour desk but very clear information is provided for entry after desk hours.
very modern , comfortable stay. Breakfast buffet was outstanding in content and quality. Reception staff friendly welcoming and knowledgeable . WiFi strong and functional throughout hotel . parking very secure directly under hotel . Bus service outside Hotel directly into city centre . Perfect location for staying outside the centre and especially for the adjacent football sports centre events
The hotel was perfectly located, close to the train station and on walking distance from the city center. The rooms were clean and all the facilities (towels, toileteries...) were provided for. The check-in and check-out also went very smooth. Even though we arrived earlier than the usual check-in, that was no problem.
For a 'premium' room it was modest in size, but very well designed and renovated to a high standard. The breakfast was first class, with a great, 5th floor view, towards the old city. We enjoyed the sauna after a long day travelling. The hotel is well located for walking into the city and to the Carols Therme.
I was robbed when I check in in reception. All my cards, ID and money were gone. No security on front door and elevator. All kinds of villains can freely enter. When I check out, two policemen are dealing one case with the receptionist. You can imagine how bad and unsafe living in this hotel.
The location is good - it`s a 2-minute walk from the central train station. Also, the city centre is relatively close by - a 7-10-minute walk. However, it`s next to the road so that it might be loud due to traffic.
The hotel manager was polite via phone and tried to help when needed.
The hotel as a whole, was so clean, spacious and quiet. Even though its on a main road we didn't hear the traffic at all. Please do not let location put you off. 12 minute walk to city centre.
The staff were super friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was amazing for a continental.
The location was great.
It was close to the city centre and other interesting for me areas.
The hotel's staff was very open and supportive.
I have forgotten 2 items in the room, which were promised to be delivered via post to other country.
Novotel offers price quality as usual. No special frills but comfortable hotel rooms, luxurious breakfasts and a good location to visit Aachen. You can park underground, easy acces to hotel lobby with the elevator.
Very nice city centre hotel. The staff were very attentive and helpful and the hotel had nice amenities at a really reasonable price. Breakfast was _really_ good for the inclusive price. Would absolutely recommend.
Great location. Easy to get to by car, with underground parking, and walking distance to city centre. Good bars and restaurants nearby. Hotel and room were clean and well maintained. Friendly and efficient staff.
The room was very comfortable. All the amenities were provided. It was extremely clean. The check in is 24/7 open because it doesn't involve any staff. The hotel messages you instructions on how to enter.
The hotel itself is a great place, nice rooms, good breakfast and the most important: Very friendly and motivated staff! The location is also very good, you can walk directly into city center of Aachen.
Simple hotel on the outskirt of the city, but within walking distance of the City Centre. Staff was friendly and accommodating, and the hotel offered a very good value for money for a one night stay.
Good value for money. Right in the city centre of Aachen with everything you may need. Pillows a bit small but the bed was comfortable and the room was very clean.
