The Steigenberger is a wonderfully appointed hotel set in beautiful landscape high atop a hill overlooking the Rhine. As a location petersburg is just superb and the hotel is a great place to stay. I booked the deluxe room with a view of the Rhine, my only real grievance being that the photos of the deluxe room shows two windows for a great view whereas, in reality we had one very small window and we had to move furniture to be able to enjoy the view. Breakfast is pricey but very good, if only we could teach other guests to close the hot food dishes so everyone could enjoy it! The pool area is very nice but don't expect to do any swimming as it is rather shallow and just too small.
The gentleman on reception on monday morning was very helpful and pleasant to talk to (and went the extra mile on an issue i had) so i haven't any grumble regarding the staff at all.
Great surroundings, great place to stay, great breakfast.
I didn't like that the room wasn't quite what I had expected but this is a relatively minor detail. I didn't feel there was enough information supplied in the room. I had no idea what to expect from breakfast as this information is not supplied, I also didn't have a minibar pricelist (it is always nice to see how extortionate prices will be, although it isn't too bad here). The bar which is supposed to be open all day was only open from 10pm according to a sign on the door, and the receptionist confirmed this. Sadly, after waiting around for a while it turned out the bar was not to open at all, which was a bit disappointing. However a young genteleman who works there was called and he supplied me with my drinks and was a very funny, professional and accomodating member of staff. Although the Steigenberger Grand is very interesting building, i feel that it can be updated a little bit, just those little details like worn carpets, uncleared tables and misplaced seating are the details that have to be right in a five star hotel.
Overall I thought the place was very good, but i expect just a little more from a 5 star hotel, you can't get by on location and opulence alone.
