Hotel Albemarle  

right on the beach

The hotel is described in Lonely Planet as the most luxurious on the island, so we decided it would be our one big splurge during our month in Ecuador. We ended up regretting the decision. Here's the positives: The hotel is ideally located across a small street from the beach and and just behind the main plaza where everything else is found. The rooms are large as is the bathroom. Rooms are well appointed and kept clean. The AC works super good and the water is nice and warm. Breakfast is adequate and included. They have WIFI, but it only works in the lobby. There is a small balcony for second floor rooms and they have a pool and upstairs sun deck. The staff set us up with a driver that took us on an excellent tour of the interior at a good rate. The front deck staff also speaks English.

Now for the downside. We were given an upgrade which was initially nice, but there was confusion among the staff as to which room and after we unpacked, we had to switch rooms. The AC works so well that the polished marble floors always had a layer of moisture and were gross and our feet were constantly filthy and needed wiping off before bed. We eventually learned to not run the AC at all. There was rarely anyone at the front desk which was at times inconvenient. They decided to fix a door which we did not know was broken at 8 PM at night. It was a big job and we eventually asked them to do it the next day. They left screws and trash from the job on the floor. We had laundry done and it took two days to get back and was delivered to us at 10 pm the night prior to departure, wet in a plastic bag. We rented bikes which were such POS that we could not ride them. To their credit, they did not charge us for the bikes. They arranged a 5:30 am pick up to take us to the pier which did not show. From an aesthetic Electrical lines are within reach from the balcony and hinder the view. The back of the hotel around the pool and eating areas has a ramshackle look that is not appealing. In short, I would recommend checking other options if you are looking for an upscale place to stay. For the price, I would not stay there again.

La salle de bain peu accueillante et peu lumineuse, avec un équipement en mauvais état les petits déjeuners sont prévus à partir de 7 h, mais à 7 h 15 rien n'est préparé ! le prix est très cher pour la qualité de l'hôtel ! un seul des membres de l'équipe rencontrée était aimable et serviable
