Very kind and warm welcome and support! Thanks for the honeymoon gift!
Very warm and friendly welcome. The property is a former convent and retains many original features. It is more like being a guest in someone's home so don't expect a anonymous bog-standard hotel. It has a beautiful covered central courtyard so there can at times be a little noise from other guests. Breakfast is a simple affair but was just fine for me - fresh fruit, cereal, fresh buns, eggs cooked as you like and good coffee. The restaurant offers a small but good menu in the evening; there is not much else nearby open at night. Highly recommended for those who prefer something different and non-plastic.
Location and decor.
The continental breakfast was meager. Staff were a bit disorganized.
I love the old town.. I have been in Ecuador 3 times and intend to spend winters in the sierra near Cotacachi.. or Cuenca.. forget Quito....
Bloody Sunday? They close the old town and we had to walk with luggage for nearly a km to reach guide;s car for a trip to Amazonia... Quito: do you want tourists or not? The city should be more accomodating or do you do so only for deluxe properties: corruption or parti-pris?
The friendliness and helpfulness of the owner and the staff is absolutely top grade.
The breakfasts served by Lily were excellent and the service she provided was first class. All of the staff were very helpful, friendly and spoke English as well as Spanish, I will stay there for sure on my next trip.
Because you are in the heart of the city it is a bit noisy at night and in the mornings. Bring earplugs.
Friendly and helpful family run hotel
We loved our first stay at Portal de Cantuña so much that we stopped there again on our return visit to Quito. The location is fabulous and Senora Sonya and the rest of the staff treated us like family. The hotel itself is an old casa that has been in their family for 4 generations. It's been updated with individual bathrooms, wifi, and a beautiful glass canopy over the inner courtyard, but retains an old-world charm. The beds were very comfortable, and we enjoyed relaxing in the sitting room and dining room, as well as the lovely inner court yard. The hotel is in the District Historico (Old Town), and San Francisco Plaza, monastery and convent are steps away, as is the Capilla de Cantuña, and the Casa del Alabado, a beautiful museum of pre-Columbian art. The hotel rate includes a hearty breakfast served on the premises, and the restaurant is also open in the evening, serving delicious home-cooked Ecuadorian dinners at a very reasonable price - a great alternative if you don't feel like venturing out during an evening rainstorm. I highly recommend the Portal de Cantuña for travelers who are looking for a great local experience.
The hotel is near a busy square and in the heart of a neighborhood, so there is sometimes street noise, and people starting their day early. Also, be aware that there is no elevator, so if you are unable to manage a flight of stairs, this might not be the best choice.
The staff was great and very friendly. My boyfriend forgot his glasses at the hotel after we departed and they sent a taxi to find us at the airport. There is nothing more you can say about a place that would go out of their way even after you paid.
Furnishings and ambiance were turn of the century, detailed & a treat from normal sterile environments. Good accommodations and great staff. Super location!
My daughter and I loved our stay at the Cantuna It is a beautiful historic hotel in a great position right in the middle of the old town Sofia and her staff were most welcoming and helpful The rooms were clean and well appointed. Breakfast was very good If you have time take advantage of the spa facilities. Massage and facial were wonderful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Quito
This place is absolutely beautiful! The central courtyard and the upstairs lounge are just amazing, and the rooms are full of character (although this can vary a bit from room to room). Location is perfect for visiting the old town. The staff was excellent and went far beyond what might be expected in order to help us out with day trips, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
MANY hotels in Quito's old town can suffer from street noise, so it's best to always request a room away from the street! Even though this hotel is actually down a driveway / alley and set back from the street, this still applies to this hotel to some extent, although it's better than many others.
This hotel has a very comfotable location in the old town. The owners are very nice and helpful and speak good english. The berakfast is good.
We stayed three nights and really enjoyed the location and hotel. Charming restored historic home close to San Fransisco square. Very helpful management and owners. Sonia was fantastic, she went out of her way to make us feel at home including offering a new fruit to try each morning and excellent fresh squeezed juices with breakfast. There is a tea room with always hot water for tea and coffee and biscuits available. The house itself is comfortable and very charming, loads of plants in the courtyard make it feel very welcoming and personal. Because it was set back in a rival courtyard the noise was not a problem at night. The curtains are a bit thin so the room gets light early but not a big deal. It was hard to say goodbye after only a short stay and Sonia sent us off with small gifts to remember our time in Quito. A lovely spot highly recommended and if we're in Quito's old town again we will definitely be back! Thanks to Sonia and her sons for everything, we will think of you often!
Leaving so soon.
decor, location, people, breakfast
insufficient internet coverage, noise
When we were there the manager Sonia was amazing she told us where to go and was super lovely!! Me and the girls happily gave her the title of being our Ecuador Mum! she was great rooms were great, did not get to the spa but by the sounds of it, the spa sounds top notch. Would recommend it to everyone!
Only bad thing, the rooms have no windows, but this was not a massive downer in the slightest, still loved it!
Sonia and her family do everything possible to make your stay in Quito memorable. The hotel is a unique residence located just next the Plaza San Francisco and perfect for sightseeing in the historic area of the city. Breakfast is a treat with different Ecuadorean fruits offered each day for you to try...loved the pink bananas.
Rooms can be chilly in the cold Ecuadorean nights
A great place to stay in the historical district. Very friendly, efficient and attentive staff. Clean and quiet. A variety of tea and biscuits always available. A good variety of fruit , cereal, bread and eggs for breakfast. A very decent family run hotel. I would most certainly stay here again
Limited menu in attached restaurant, although excellent staff and food preparation
Location couldn't be better!! Right in the heart of the Centro Historico. People from the staff are very nice and helpful. Lovely and warm place to stay in Quito.
The only negative point is the noise. The rooms are not sound proof at all. And mine was right next to the reception, so not the quietest room in the hotel...
location staff charming guest house nice common space great European breakfast
noise, not because anyone was loud but rooms all face a center atrium and can hear everything.
Cozy and friendly.
Very poor breakfast
Good location Very nice historical house Personnel very nice and helpful
The location was excellent, the staff were helpful, the restaurant was great! All in all, a great bargain -- would highly recommend to anyone spending some time in Quito!
While I liked the smell of the air freshener, I think I may have been mildly allergic to it.
This is a lovely old family run hotel..The rooms are very clean and well appointed. The breakfast is great and I would recommend trying the restaurant at least once It also has spa facilities at a very reasonable price. Sonia and her staff are so welcoming and accommodating. The hotel has a wonderful position right in the middle of the old Town My daughter and I loved staying at the Cantuna and will definitely recommend it to our friends
