“ I loved the atmosphere of this bed and breakfast. I did not want to stay at a high rise in Quito, but wanted a taste of the culture of the Andean mountains. The unique surroundings of this place could not be duplicated. I felt like it was a walk back in time to the farm and monastery that it used to be. ”

The moment you check in you're family. The staff is like long-lost cousins, food is superb and for American and European standards very good value for money. There are no cookie-cutter-rooms,every room is different and designed to make you feel like you belong there. There are a reading room,a library (please leave your cast-offs there),a very cozy lounge, all with fireplace and just the place to take a nap after lunch.Wonderful gardens to discover all sorts of vegetation, including orchids, ancient trees......and while I was there 2 Llamas were employed as "lawnmowers",very cute.Personally I'm not into riding, but I saw magnificent horses in the stables, which guests can enjoy.I Celebrated my birthday there and was serenaded by Ramiro and got a chocolatecake with candles. It was my second stay there......and definitely not the last! If you expect to walk out of your hotel and are "where the action is".....NO.But wonderful long walks (map provided by the hotel)......YES.

How often do you get to stay in a 400 year old hacienda? The buildings are nicely restored and modernized and offer a hint of what life may have been like in colonial times. There are fires burning in the fireplaces of the common areas all day providing welcome warmth from the high altitude chill. Mesias is your bartender and apparently the head waiter who is very accommodating. Rooms are clean and comfortable. You are held somewhat captive due to the distance from Otavalo so dining is limited to the property. Meals are expensive with breakfast at $15.00 and dinner $22.00. We did not sample lunch. Food quality is good but not gourmet. Internet is not available in the rooms and is spotty to non-existent in the common areas. Shower water was not hot enough in our room but others had no complaint. Generally, the hotel is over priced.

You are made to feel at home in an incredible setting. A destination all by itself, where the owner will sit with you for half an hour as you ask his advice on places not to miss in South America. A wonderful experience. There is nothing to dislike.

It is simply a great place! The rooms are very nicely decorated, with woodfires (taken care of daily by a friendly helper!), comfortable hot showers, a table and seats. Set in an old monastery, there is a huge and very well-kept parc area with lots of flowers, plants and trees, some alpaca "lawn-mowers", horse stables, spacious reading rooms, TV-viewing rooms, a bar, a restaurant with a tremendeous dining room. You feel like 300 years ago, but with modern comfort. I even had the pleasure of playing a game of squash with Cesario, the general manager!

I loved the atmosphere of this bed and breakfast. I did not want to stay at a high rise in Quito, but wanted a taste of the culture of the Andean mountains. The unique surroundings of this place could not be duplicated. I felt like it was a walk back in time to the farm and monastery that it used to be. The friendliness of the staff and the added touches such as the fire in your room when you arrived back from dinner and the hot water bottles in your bed made up for the cool stone walls that surround each room. The decor, cleanliness, and meals were very nice. The price was a little higher than some places, but you are getting safe food and environment and everything you need is at your fingertips. Loved it!

The fireplace in the bedroom It was boring. There is not much to do at the facility except for walking around its gardens (which were beautiful). The horseback ride was lead by an extremely indifferent guide-- he talked on his cellphone during most of the ride and didn't pay any attention to us even though he knew we were beginners. Other problems: there is no place to get a snack during the day-- food is available only at mealtimes, which are pricey for Ecuador. And there are few choices on the menus. Moreover, the hacienda is so remote from everything that you cannot even go outside the facility to get food unless you hire a car and take a long and expensive ride to someplace equally remote.

The staff was very helpful and polite, and all seem to be from the local town of San Pablo de Lago. Many speak English, although it is best to know Spanish. The owner, Nick, was as a fascinating and friendly storyteller, who gladly expalins the fascinating history of the property. The property its self was wonderful. The gardens are huge, beautiful, and relaxing. All the buildings are wonderfully restored, especially the "monastary". I especially like the cosmological mural. Look for the secret passageway to the tower- it has great views! The Hacienda also has great access to hiking/horseriding trails and the nearby town, where you can easily find taxis to the markets of Otovalo and the Condor Center. Overall, this is an unforgettable place to visit! A few of the bathrooms are a little faulty, but they are far better than most in Ecuador.
