PL is a very pleasant fishing village in EC on the Pacific ocean. The beach is fabulous and there are many good places to eat. We recommend eating at Ancora. The owners and staff are great. The chef is from Barcelona and makes some original Spanish dishes.
One bit of advice for all these beach villages is eat early to avoid the loud music that fires up as the evening progresses. For some reason they think this extremely loud music is what everyone wants to hear.

There were lots of things to do outside the beach: whale watching, scuba, seeing the monkeys in the Sendero Bola del Oro, bird watching in Ayampe Reserve. In the community el Pital we used Carlos Manrique and it was a great guide - 0982767109 or on Facebook at sendero bola de oro. We went with the Rosita whale watching and they really tried to make sure you got your money's worth of whales, seals, and boobies! It is fun to get up in the morning and watch the fishing boats come back in with the birds fighting the fishermen for their haul! There were so good restaurants depending on your taste - the Hotel Victor Hugo had lots of variety and good desserts; the Il Capuccino pizzería Ristorante had good options and a friendly staff.

Like most travellers in summer we went to Puerto Lopez for Isla de Plata and the whale watching. It's definitely worth a visit as Isla de Plata, the turtles and humpback whales were magnificent.
Unfortunately in summer you only have a few real sunny days. We had one (when we visited Isla de Plata) but the other days were overcasted with sometimes a fine drizzle. Therefore we did not went to visit/see Parque National Machalilla which should be worth a visit as well.

Small beach town with much to do if you are into wildlife exploration.
Even though accommodation options are limited and fairly pricey (I recommend Casita Madame for the best value-for-money), we have stayed in and around Puerto Lopez for over a week, exploring the beaches, Isla de Plata, nearby villages… we go on tours, snorkeling, diving, swimming, hiking— no reason to get bored!
Restaurants are a bit tricky so we switched to accommodation with kitchen pretty soon, but do try Aloha Cafe, Cappuccino (the Italian) or the Colombian place (around the corner from Cappuccino but I forget the exact name).

Puerto Lopez is a great spot to spend a few days and nights. Don't forget to visit Pacha Chocolates and coffee on the E15 north of town. The owners are there and will give a tour if you have 4 people. The day trip to Isle La Plata is a great trip for $45 each but be prepared to walk and climb.

The problem was that it was supposed to be sunny but it was just pouring rain the whole time. The town is mud bath in bad weather, only marginally set up for this kind of thing. It still represents a much better choice in terms of its range of services compared to the neighboring towns.
The owner, Marianela, was super friendly, caring, welcoming, helpful and gracious. She made us feel like family and offered to help us with every part of our stay in Puerto Lopez. She even booked our whale watching excursion. The “room” that I stayed at with my 84 year old mother and elderly aunt was more like an apartment with a terrace and beautiful view of the city and the Pacific. It’s a perfect place for a peaceful vacation while still having access to the activities in the city. I would recommend this accommodation to everyone!
The best about the hostel is the staff. Maria and Osvaldo are such a nice couple, very attentive, helpful and friendly. Puerto Lopez is very safe to walk, and so, despite not being quite in the center, Alcazaba was close to it, in a quiet part of town, and easy to reach walking or by moto-taxi (-1$). We felt at home. At first we were staying one night and ended up staying almost a week. There is also a small kitchen we could use, a refrigerator and potable water.
Amazing place away from the noise of the centre of Puerto Lopez. Marylin was a fantastic host who answered questions immediately and helped me book tours and transport for very reasonable prices. The room itself was lovely and exceptionally clean. The breakfasts were delicious and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The value for the money was truly amazing and I would totally recommend staying here if you are stopping in the area…
The hostel has overall very pleasant atmosphere, the owners and staff are welcoming and helpful, there is a lovely garden inhabited by local wildlife. This time I was in probably the cheapest room, still great but downside- no hammock. The hotels location is great, away from the bustle and blaring seaside bars of the busy part of the town, still just 10 minute walk. The beach at that end of town is also cleaner.
Amazing location across from the beach in a quieter part of town, but a very easy walk or short tuk tuk ride to the bars and restaurants in town. The staff was top notch, rooms were comfortable and well maintained w AC and the food was great. Couldn't recommend any higher. Best place to stay in Puerto Lopez by far and the staff couldn't be any friendlier or more hospitable
Pleasant hostal with a great atmosphere created by the owner. The hostel has a great location in the center and a short walk from the beach. Puerto Lopéz is a very pleasant and quiet place to relax, with great restaurants and bars. The options for what you would like around Puerto Lopez will advise you directly at the hostel.
Staff were SO helpful because it was quite quiet, they even drove us to the bus station when we were struggling to get a taxi. And let us check out late no extra charge. Really close to the beach and restaurants but couldn’t hear any noise from the hotel.
didn't try breakfast, room lovely, very clean, beach clean and almost like a private beach, not crowded at all at this end. We live in very close to Salinas and Chipipe beach, but prefer Puerto Lopez and Casita Madame ( a 2hour drive).
Beautiful hotel with a really lovely pool and relaxing area which was so nice to have. Five minute walk to the front but not a problem. Owner was so helpful and accommodating and we felt really at home and comfortable here.
Good enough breakfast (though a little disappointing by Ecuadorian standards). The room was comfortable enough, although not exceptional. Nice location on beach, a five minute walk from most restaurants.
The breakfast changes daily and the staff are so nice. Michael was amazingly helpful and always so nice and Mercedez made my time at the hotel feel like home. I would recommend this hotel!
Located well away from the business of the Puerto Lopez boulevard, this guesthouse is a little oasis of peace. The rooms and outside area are beautiful and inviting to relax in.
This is Ecuador and I did not expect more than what was delivered. The staff was helpful and tried their best to meet our requirements. The place was clean which is important.
