Staff, ambiance, decor, breakfast. Would provide an excellent base for day trips around the region. Would stay there again.
Depends on how one is travelling. Not near shops, etc, have to book dinner in advance, can't just have a cup of coffee on a whim, but, knowing this, it is possible to work around these things. Advantages outweigh disadvantages.q
1. Historical building with original features 2. Fine grounds 3. Quiet 4. Comfortable room and bed and well equipped bathroom 5. Plentiful breakfast
1. Travellers need to ascertain in advance whether an evening meal will be available 2. No apparent aids for older guests with reduced mobility
Location is in the middle of the country and very handy for stopovers while travelling. The food was fabulous...best porridge I've ever eaten. I understand that Cook uses organic foods. This no doubt contributes to the great flavour but her own touches were superb. I was told they will be growing some of their produce on site. To me, this confirms importance placed by staff on fresh, organically grown foods and thus expect food will continue to be great. After having resolved the Wifi problem, staff took me on a tour of the mansion, relating interesting history and restoration details. Together, superb food and excellent staff changed my rating for this location, which otherwise would have been negative. Lastly, the owner told me that he had plans to pave over the gravel driveways. In my view, asphalt would have spoiled my appreciation of having stayed in an authentic and restored Estonian manor.
I gave this hotel a good review even though until morning I was wishing I hadn't come. It was early evening when owner checked me in and staff had already gone home. I had brought food with me, anticipating that none would be available...and it was not. There were several problems. First, central heating had been turned off for the year and my basement room (all the rooms are in the basement) was heated with portables. The noise from the fans meant I had to choose between being warm on the one hand and watching tv on the other. The volume was capped on the tv and drowned out by fan noise. The tv screen was smaller than my smallest computer monitors and located high up in a corner. Even had I been able to hear it, the screen was too small to see comfortably from the bed. No value for money on that count. Plus, having lived in old stone houses myself, I was amazed that central heating would ever be turned off...these buildings take forever to heat up and stay comfortable and dry even in locations that have warmer and longer summers. Therefore, I was suspicious about mold although I did not see any. Second, Wifi did not work. I had chosen this location in part b/c I needed Wifi. Had I checked in during the day when staff were available, I have no doubt that this problem would have been resolved quickly...just as it was the next morning when I met staff at breakfast.
