The first time you drive up that little winding road out of Eibar, you will panic and your heart will be in your throat until you climb the mountain to her serene estate. But Esther is right: the second time you do the drive, it's no big deal. Just part of the charm. We had no trouble at all locating it with our GPS. I miss that little drive already...
I don't know where to begin... our whole experience here was the highlight of our trip through northern Spain.
The proud Basque owner and hostess, Esther, was wonderful and accommodating. Since she knew no English and I no Spanish (nor Basque, of course!), she had her summer agriculture student do some interpreting for us and gave us some interesting history on the mansion and the region to help us appreciate our experience.
The home is amazing... how she managed to restore an 800-year-old home to this degree of modernity is beyond me. Everything was impeccable and tastefully decorated to the era, with all the comfort of a modern hotel. We loved our suite with the sloping beamed ceiling and view up the mountain to the sheep and cows in the distance.
Breakfasts were abundant and made to order, served professionally in an elegant formal dining area with views of the mountain. Wifi is better on the main floor, so we enjoyed using our computer from her grande living room. Everything about the home is charming and enveloping... even their cheerful sheep dogs.
From Eibar, all the sights of San Sebastian and Bilbao (and Zarrautz, and Orio...) are easily navigated, with the reward of returning to your little piece of paradise on the mountain later.
We can't say enough about this place... Esther was amazing and so is the property. Wish we could return.
