Myself and a friend travelled to Oviedo to do some cycling in Asturias. I had booked Hotel de La Reconquista blind, going only by the photos on the website, and the price.
Upon arrival, we were amazed. The building is incredibly grand, set around two courtyards, with many pillars, and lovely decor. There is a pleasant bar area off to the side of the courtyard-type lounge. Our room was very clean, well appointed, and comfortable.
The staff could not have been more helpful. They are polite, kind, and very welcoming.
We were asked if we would like a tour of the hotel, as there are many more conference rooms, and a chapel. The building is a former hospice and orphanage, and a really remarkable place.
English visitors seemed to be quite rare, the hotel is most popular with Spanish guests, and hosts the King and royal family annually. For me, this makes it even more attractive, as I prefer to visit less touristy places.
Oviedo town is beautiful, diverse, and very friendly. The main Park is 500m from the hotel, and there are many great restaurants. We were surprised to hear bagpipes at the market- apparently a traditional instrument of the region. Be sure to sample the local bean and meat stew, and the cider, which is aerated by being poured from height into your glass. You may get a little damp!
Overall, the town was amazing, but the hotel even more so. A real find, and one I am planning to visit again very soon.
