Very quiet hotel,in a great neighborhood very safe with lots of shops and tapas bars, everything was near(center of the city, museums, metro)warm, comfortable bed and no light was coming in,in the morning(if you wake up easily)very clean, gentle staff, good internet connection,we would love to go there again!
A very helpful staff that could speak English, the great location near the main museums, and the general cleanliness of the hotel.
The worst part was the fact that there were no English channels on the TV but that was not a big deal. An English speaking news channel would have been much appreciated.
A very clean room with a comfortable bed, helpful staff, good internet connection, and close to all the major sites.
We were not able to adjust room temperature, so we opened the french window, which became a bit too noisy. But it was not a problem for us in the end. Overall, we are very satisfied and will recommend this hostal to anyone.
Though the place doesn't look like much on the outside, it is beautifully decorated within. Javier, our host, was very pleasant & helpful. An added benefit was his knowledge of English. We were in walking distance from The Prado, Plaza Mayor & other major sights. A little cafe across the street offered reasonably priced breakfasts.
The elevator was small. It didn't bother us, but if you have much luggage you'd need to use it more than once.
Not very much.
Plenty. Ugly furniture, cramped room, lack of sufficient toiletries and towels.Greedy owners. Ending up with a scrawled business card instead of proper receipt.
You could not find a better location to visit Madrid as a tourist. We were well looked after and given good advice on local meals . The room was peaceful and we slept well. Interesting building.
Location, location, location and very accommodating staff
Easy to find in a safe and quiet area. Close to all attractions and transport options. Plenty of hot water. Staff helpful and welcoming.
Not really a minus but no English channel on TV if only to keep up with the news
It is very well situated: walking distance to the major museums, retiro park, train station, metro stop. Excellent tapas bars and taxi stand just around the corner. The staff, Javier and Saul, are excellent. I had to bring my husband to the emergency room (all ok now) late at night. Both of them were of great help referring us to a good hospital and always offering to help the following days. They were both reassuring since we do not know anyone there and we are deeply grateful. We would stay again in Hostal Gonzalo and recommend it to family and friends.
Considering it is a hostal, there is nothing to dislike.
Hostal Gonzalo was excellent!; I saw it had great reviews online and it still exceeded my expectations; very clean, nice, great location/ neighborhood; wonderful customer service -- Javier who spoke good English was very nice, helpful, and always available; very tidy hostal and room with nice furnishings and fixtures; comfortable stay; A/C worked well; Shower was good; Bed was fine/comfortable; great location in quiet, pleasant neighborhood: about 5 minute walk to Prado Museum; 10 mins or so to Retiro Park (very nice and huge); 15 mins to Puerta del Sol; 4-5 min walk to closest Metro stop (Anton Martin); 10 min walk to Atoche train station; If willing to walk, every major sight or pedestrian street is walkable from the hostal
Only issue: Free WiFi was finicky; inconsistent; would work for brief periods of time but then were periods of time when my iPhone and laptop detected the WiFi but did not connect
Friendly staff. Clean, comfortable room. Air conditioning! Close to good restaurants and the tourist buses.
Everything was absolutely great, especially the staff who couldn't have been more gracious and helpful
A spotless, albeit small room (but this is normal in Europe) with everything you need including AC. The owners are charming, welcoming and make you fee right at home. The fun restaurants and bars a few doors away made it hard to leave the neighbourhood. Plus it is so close to all the key museums - there is nothing not to like about Hostal Gonzalo. We will happily go back there on our next visit to Madrid.
Javier was very a very hospitable host making us feel very welcome. He also gave us some sightseeing tips. The hotel is right next to the major museums and only a 10-15 minute walk to Puerto del Sol.
Good location, five minutes walk to the prado museum. Neat and clean, the bed is comfortable.
The staff were great. Happy to recommend places to eat, go etc... equally happy to draw a small map if necessary. Well located, clean - would definitely recommend
Very quiet and clean, good beds, pleasant lounge area and very helpful owner who went out of his way to make our stay as good as possible.
Some rooms rather small, we swopped for one at the front for only a small extra cost.
The host at the hostal was very lovely and helpful. He have us great restaurant options and highlighted all the best places to see in Madrid. The room was just what we needed, simple yet clean and we even had the room attended to each day which is not usual for a hostal. Very close to Madrid P.A train station and a 5 min walk from the beautiful Reitro Parque.
Hotel Gonzalo is in the Barrio de Las Letras, two blocks from the Prado's main entrance and walking distance from Atocha Station and the Airport Express stop at Plaza de Cibeles. Just one block away were all the tapas bars/restaurants on Calle de Jesus. Our room was small but had everything we needed. Air conditioning and wifi were great, and Javier and his family were available if we had questions. The price was more than reasonable and saved us a lot of money when we compared it to the prices we paid for hotels in other cities.
Toiletries provided: one small bar of soap. Since I always travel with a few extra toiletries, this was not a problem--just something for other travelers to be aware of.
it is located in the center of Madrid, the owner of the hostal (Antonio) helps you in every thing you ask its near the center of the night life and its quite also!
the rooms are small no safe box
Extremely helpful proprietor, who spoke very good English and made several very useful suggestions about things we could do or how to do them. He also recommended an excellent restaurant. Everything was kept spotless, and our room, although overlooking the street, was quiet because of double-glazing and double shutters.
The beds were a little hard but OK, and for the price, very reasonable.
Clean, nice staff, central location... Perfect,
Comfy, tidy and clean. Staff was nice and helpful! Loved the restaurants nearby! Good location, quiet, safe and convenient. There was a supermarket downstairs.
The basin was shallow! Wifi was good on the first day only! Too cold at night the aircon, needed to switch it off in the midnight!
