Although the outside is nothing special the reception, restaurant and importantly the rooms pack the wow factor. The hotel is a good base for the museums and bars and our room had really good views on to the river. Request a high floor to avoid stairing into the Habitat across the street! The glass lifts are not for the faint hearted!

Very nice design, spacious room, good breakfast buffet, great location. Breakfast staff was clearly not well trained - talked amongst themselves and did not meet the level of the rest of the hotel - reminded me of the majority of the poor service I see in Spain, while the rest of the hotel was above and beyond. We had breakfast three days in a row, so I am not just talking about a single incident.

Impressive building, conveniently located. Efficient, friendly staff. Generous, quality, buffet breakfast. Our room was spacious and comfortable. We have stayed in Bilbao many times but this was our first stay at the Melia - which outshone all our earlier experiences. The towels weren't as white and fluffy as might have been expected - but this is a minor detail considering our excellent overall impression.

A very modern, well-appointed hotel in an excellent location for the main conference centres, the city centre and Guggenheim. Great design, fast lifts and nice decor. Th breakfast is way over-priced, there is no free WiFi and our room was not made up on one of the three days we stayed.

A beautiful hotel with wonderful rooms. I especially liked that excellent, reasonable food was available all the time. The bar and snack bar was excellent even when the dining room was closed. The breakfast was superb!!!! It was a lovely walk along the river to the Guggenheim that was very short. Even the outside cafe was enjoyable.

Nice hotel with good tram connection to the old town and within walking distance to the city centre as well as to Guggenheim Museum. Also - for football enthusiasts - a short walk to San Mames stadium.

Had previously stayed at Melia Alicante so when I needed an overnight stop for the ferry to Portsmouth it was a no brainer. Reception staff at both hotels were excellent. Only stayed one night but was disappointed that room only had a brickwall for a view.

The hotel is modern and stylish. The location is good for the Guggenheim, however it is about a 20 minute walk from the old town where the best shops and Pinxtos (tapas) bars are. Not an issue if you like walking as the walk is pretty nice either along the river promenade(not at night though as quiet and not well lit and few dodgy looking characters lurking in the shadows!!) or best walk along the main shopping avenue. There is a nice park opposite the hotel where if you are patient you can get a parking spot which is free over the weekend (hotel charge quite high). Room excellent (although we were given a bit of a stinker at first as it was a smoking one!) after going back to reception the very helpful and competent (if a bit slow) girl put us in another room. Bathroom huge with a great walk in double shower and double sink. All in all a good hotel and would go back again if we ever get the desire (not likely) to go back to Bilbao! (Been there done that etc) None really apart from the fact that there are not enough staff on reception and the ones that are are pretty slow giving rise to queues. The price should have included breakfast. There are better hotels for similar price with breakfast and I beleive you are paying a premium for being close to the river and the Guggenheim. Better option to look at hotels closer to the old town.
