Palacio de Mengibar  

Mengibar was a perfect stopover en route from our home in the south of Spain, to the Cazorla National Park. The hotel is extremely well positioned, on a lovely plaza, in a town that does not have a lot else to offer. The hotel was very good value for money; we had a comfortable bedroom with a well equipped and decent sized bathroom. The balcony overlooked the courtyard, which was pleasant, but lacking in privacy. We would certainly recommend the hotel to other travellers, but only for a very short stopover.

We thought the restaurant was attractive, but the food was overpriced and the service was certainly not up to scratch! There was only one waiter on duty for the first couple of hours, which should not have been too difficult as during the whole evening the restaurant only had 13 covers. We know that because, having got to the restaurant just as it opened, we were still there, having waited forever for our food, by last orders!!

We were traveling with another couple and the wife wanted to stay in a castle during our trip to Spain and Portugal. The Palacio de Mengibar exceeded our expectations. The rooms were well appointed and very comfortable with balconies overlooking a central courtyard and the facility offered many spa amenities.The restaurant setting and food were exceptional as was the service. An exceptional value during off season.

The hotel itself is a great place to come, enjoy the amenities and unwind, and use as a base for visiting the general area and Jaen, but not a location to come walk in the evenings, or eat outside the hotel. That being said would still recommend as a respite during a long trip.

Hidden charge to use the Spa as they wanted you to buy a hair net and flip flops for 6 Euro each. I'm bald so that's a bit daft anyway. Was a stop over between Granada and Cordoba but to be honest was a bit in the middle of nowhere.

We were traveling from Malaga to Madrid and wanted to have a stop in between after about 300 km drive. So we surged a location close to the highway just to do a stopover. The hotel was easy to find using a gps. The hotel is a former Castle and beautiful renovated. The room we had was simple. Could had have a little more furniture. There was only one chair for 3 people no table, it had some desk. The shower and bath was clean but had no glass doors so the floor became totally wet. The spa was nice with a lot of possibilities. We had some good time with out little one in the warm inside swimming pool. Although officially children are not allowed in the pool it was permitted in our case. Maybe because there were not so many people in the hotel using the spa at that moment.

There was a cafeteria in the hotel with nice staff. The restaurant was closed. They told us that they were in between management and new owners and therefore the menu was not complete and the choice very limited. We choose some thinks anyhow. The quality of the food was very poor but brought to us with a smile. In the village were no alternative restaurants. So this was it. The next morning, just before wanted to leave we found a nice looking bar with plenty possibilities to sit on sofas close to a fireplace. This was not open during the night before.

Loved the decor, the style of the hotel. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings. And not too expensive.

The Paliacio was a beautiful old building in the centre of the town.Friendly and helpful staff.Room was comfortable and as described.The free use of sauna;jaccuzzi and thermal bath was welcome after sightseeing. Quality of food excellent.

There was no view from our room apart from a patch of sky-dissapointing as the room was excellent. We had read previous comments about the restaurant being closed during the week so booked Sunday night-only to be told that the restaurant was also closed Sunday! We ended up eating top quality food in a bare,soulless cafeteria-considering the rest of the surroundings in the hotel it was VERY dissapointing.As there are hardly any other places to eat we had no choice but to eat there. The Palacio de Mengibar was a great bargain in terms of the quality of the rooms and of the spa. It is a convenient stopover point on a trip through Andalucia.

-Mengibar, the little town in which the hotel is located, has nothing to offer in terms of sites or gastronomic experience. The hotel dining room seemed overpriced. (We ate at a nearby cafe recommended by a pensioner in the main square). The spa requires a certain kind of swimming cap. Buying one on the spot proved expensive. Only the foreigners seemed to have been required to buy one. You can take a bus excursion to the major sites in the area (Jaen, Baeza and Ubeda) on on certain days of the week and at certain times.

Character and historical monument rolled into one excellent spa with first class massages on offer at very reasonable rates. Good food and helpful staff. Off the beaten track in a small village. Worth seeking out for a quiet stay

The room was excellent and the hotel itself was worthy of the 4 stars. The restaurant food was fantastic and worth the very reasonable prices and excellent staff and attention.
