We chose this hotel for a quiet getaway and it was certainly that. Right in the middle of the mountains, it was quiet and secluded. We discovered that the end of August is obviously the off season as there were only 2 other guests on our first night and we were alone on the second. As we really just wanted a base to explore the area, that didn't make any difference as we were just booked in for bed and breakfast. The staff were friendly, even if they did outnumber us(!), and we made full use of the free computer in reception. The highlight of our visit was sitting on the terrace in the evening, watching the sun go down until all we could see were odd lights in the mountains, and eating freshly cut jamon and cheese, washed down with ice cold beer. We would certainly visit again, but possibly more in season (spring or autumn probably). Although the swimming pool was clean, and we had it to ourselves, the surround was untidy and looked uncared for. We were directed to a lounge to have a drink but it was untidy, dirty (wrappers and papers on the floor) and generally uninviting. The ouside cafeteria was closed and locked, probably because it was out of season, but the hotel information did not specify that. The information in the bedroom was out of date (we had the sheet with another guests comments and that was dated May 2011!) and there was little information on the area in reception. We felt that as the hotel was so quiet, the staff could have done more to tidy it and keep things up to date.

The staff were very helpful, the postion is simply glorious and the nearby village, Torres, and its people were welcoming at the feria The pool was not welcoming and the spa did not appear to be operational (we never asked so perhaps it was).

Most impressed with staff here. On arrival - and this hotel is way out in the countryside and bit of a challenge to locate - we found the door locked and gathered that our booking had not been received. We spoke no spanish and they little english and we could easily have been turned away and left to find some where else. Despite the hotel being "closed" the staff member found us a room (basic but quite adequate), called in a cook to provide an evening meal and then as we left the next day, charged us a reduced rate because they were painting!. It is quite a big place and obviously very busy during the ski and walking season. Top marks to the Almoratin - it is in a beautiful setting amidst the valleys of olive groves so if you are looking for a night out of the cities of southern Spain........
