Score from 1530 reviews Very good
calm (thick walls!! but for the people who like to stay online while in bed, the wifi doesn't go through very good in the room... we were here to disconnect so perfect!), location, friendly and helpful staff
breakfast was not as great as expected. the choice wasn't very wide and quality of the food not as good as other buffet breakfast we had in same hotel range. On the friday, we came down a bit later around 9.00 but there were nearly nothing left.

Dark breakfast room
Very cool building as well as interior, nice rooms with comfortable beds and great rain showers with regulated water temperature. Excellent breakfast with a wide choice of warm meals (eggs, bacon, sausages, pastry) and a cold buffet. Friendly staff, always ready to help. WiFi hardly works inside the rooms, apparently due to thick walls, but works perfectly in the public areas. Tram stop a few steps away from the hotel, the tram will take you to the center in less than 10 minutes, passing both the Uspenski Cathedral and the Helsinki Cathedral on the way.
We usually prefer no cleaning but since it took two towels on the floor of the bathroom to prevent water from being everywhere, we were hoping for a change of towels which did not happen. Also, our trash remained in the trash can for two days.
- Helpful staff: I arrived really early and they had a room ready - Interesting hotel, but the prison-theme is not overplayed, just the right amount. - Good location, tram stop just in front of the hotel
- no wi-fi connection in my room - quite "boring" breakfast: I would have preferred bigger variety - only TV channels, no films
1. Location (the tram stop is 20m away from the hotel's front door, so you can reach the city center in less than 10 minutes, it's noize doesn't reach you though). Katajanokka island itself is a quitand beautiful place away from the city's hustle and bustle. 2. The staff was helpful and supportive 3. The bed and pillow were extremely comfortable 4. Room facilities - you have all you need - minibar, hair dryer, ironing board, safebox, etc. 5. Sound isolation - built as a prison, it's no surprise that it's walls are so thick that no external sound reaches you during your stay 6. Meal plan - many choices are available and the food is delicious 7. Extra facilities: sauna and fitness hall 8. Overall appearance: this hotel has spirit and a history, so you have a feeling you visit a museum and get much more impressions in comparison to any other regular hotel. Will definitely come back and recommend this hotel to others!
Wireless internet in room might not work (because of thick walls), the hotel's owners should have been deployed a few repeaters across the building, but while they haven't, be sure to take a portable router with you or be prepared to catch a signal only in the hall (which is full of sofas and arm-chairs to comfortably sit in).
The hotel has great location and genius loci is still there. Very interesting idea to swith from former prison into a hotel while keeping image from past times. Tried as well finish sauna but there I would expect more comfort or sort of to be more "finish".Otherwise staff was very welcomed and breakfast perfect. Nice idea as well serving in metalic utensils.
STAFF IS VERY GENTLE. LOCATION IS VERY PARTICULAR. THE ORIGINAL CELL IS GREAT! RESTAURANT IS JUST DOWNSTAIRS AND NICE, BUT VERY EXPENSIVE..WITHOUT ANY GOOD REASON. BREAKFAST IS RATHER GOOD..BUFFET WITH MANY DIFFERENT DISHES AND DRINKS BUT TOO MUCH OFTEN THEY FINISH TOO SOON.
CLEANING..THE ROOM IS NOT ENOUGH CLEANT. AT MY ARRIVAL I FOUND CUT NAILS ON THE FLOOR AND SAND EVERYWHERE. TEMPERATURE IS NOT ENOUGH COMFORTABLE..RATHER COLD..NO POSSIBLE TO MANAGE TEMPERATURE INSIDE BY MYSELF.
Very friendly staff, very close to the center, very good breakfast.
Sauna in junior suit is nice.
King size bed is not king size in common understanding. It's just two single beds together
location: close to city center (approx. 1.5-1.8km), 15min walk to railway station very quiet place (due to thick walls and proper windows): Your sleep will be perfect nice rooms: my stay was in deluxe with sauna; helps much in autumn / winter period
a bit too expensive: not so very in the old city-center, but price comparable to Radisson Blue etc poor breakfasts, horrible coffee WiFi almost absent in the room (only in public halls); so please ensure that You'll have an RJ plug to connect from Your bed
Very original type of hotel - ex-prison, nice interior. Wide selection of breakfast.
They don't have slippers for the quests.
The room was nice
Poor wifi signal
Historical building, well located
Bed pillows and blankets too synthetic, breakfast choice poor.
Location Nice idea
Wanted to try something unusual for a hotel and enjoyed our stay a lot. Very good location, tram stop just outside the gate. Overall hotel atmosphere absolutely not depressing, as may be expected from the prison. And very quiet, which was the gratest advantage.
This hotel is one of the kind. We highly recommend it because we spent in this "prison" very pleasant time.
+ very clean and fresh room + quiet location + good breakfast + walking distance to city center + good value for money
- quite cold in the room - no WiFi coverage in the room (which is due to thick walls) - smell at the corridor outside our room - no restaurants/bars in close proximity of the hotel
Really great staff, wonderfull shower, the room was quite big and very clean. The location is great, not in a city Center but close enough. There is a bus stop in front of the hotel very usefull and easy. Great breakfast! We loved!!
The wifi in the room is poor, maybe can be solved with repeaters in each room.... But for us was not a big deal...
Consistency in the "prison" theme: "decorations", staff clothes, ... Very welcoming staff. Quality and size of the room. Due to the thick wall, you were not disturbed by noise from neighbours or from outside while in the room.
The queue might be long for check out with not enough staff to deal with it.
Friendly staff, comfortable accomodation at affordable price. An old prison transformed in to a lovely hotel - this in itself makes for a memorable stay and reminder of Helsinki.
Really nice staff! Located on a tram line (in front of hotel) Quiet rooms 20-25 minute walk to city center
The WIFI - either no signal or a slow signal
Everything especially the building & breakfast
The decor was very dated and depressing, especially for a hotel in the Design Center of Helsinki.
The Katajanokka is excellently located on tramline 4 and very near the ferry-terminals. Rooms are cosy with a good size bathroom and good noise insulation. Food is very good, we had breakfast and dinner, both of which were very tasty. The staff is very friendly and speaks many languages.
The breakfast-rush was messy and people were eating with previous breakfasters dirty plates still on the tables. However the quality of the food makes up for that.
