In the heart of Avignon, on the main square "Place de l'Horloge", 164 ft from the Popes Palace and the famous bridge, Mercure Cité des Papes features free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned rooms with a safe.

Score from 680 reviews Very good
Located inside the ramparts on the most beautiful street in the city, the Bristol Hotel has welcomed guests to the heart of Avignon for nearly 85 years.
Score from 618 reviews Very good
The room and bathroom were very big, included a small living room.
The hotel is too big.
Lovely room with nice separate lounge, very effective sound proofing
Not easy to find drop off spot for car, extra for parking in public carpark
Room size (we paid for superior room), and position. Some staff were friendly and helpful. Not much else.
For a superior suite it needed to be refreshed. Some walls & furniture looked tired. The double glazed windows in the sitting area could not be opened as a note said it was damaged. This room should not have been available until that window had been fixed. Not everyone wants to sit in sealed rooms with airconditioning. The airconditioning was just adequate and we left it on permanently. Lucky for us the bedroom window could be opened. I wore earplugs as the room faced the main street. I had pre-requested a quiet room in my booking and to get that there were extra costs which I found out on arrival so,to have a room looking over the garden (not on street or railway station) it would have been an extra 20E per night. The attitude of stinginess made one feel it was not a 4 star hotel. It wasn't cheap to stay here, though thru booking.com it made it possible). The supply of 2 coffee sachets, 2 disposable coffee cups, 2 teas, sugar & 2 small 1 serve milks did not reflect the marketing of this 4 star hotel. Also not a full range of toiletries on first night ( we stayed 2 nights) and 1 bottle of complementary water for 2 people set the scene. We left a note for the room staff for double supply of coffee cups/coffee and water. All supplied except for water. Full set of toiletries were left. We also didn't do breakfast here, too expensive and you could eat inside the wall of the old town at reasonable prices. This hotel is aimed at the business community, people with very large wallets, and groups. Anyone outside these really don't cut it. It was hard to feel welcome and a valued customer. If you give people a room that was supposed to be a superior room with broken windows, and obviously needing a refresh it was NOT a superior room and you show contempt for your paying customers. Stay here at your own risk.
lots to see, palais des papes especially the evening sound and light performance (August to October). Pont D'avignon excelllent audio commentary available in English, tourist train... Tourism office really helpful as were staff in hotel...
A place to visit in good weather, lots of walking and cobbled streets are tiring..sound and light show only in French, would be better to have audio unit with translation which is available for Pont d'Avignon and tour of the palais des papes.
The hotel was very close to the train station and right outside the 'wall' of Avignon. The checkin process was very easy.
There were no lights in our hallway and the lift was broken. For the price we paid, we expected more comfort and more security.
Easy parking, close to city center, large rooms, clean and comfortable, very nice reception area, friendly staff
Wifi was far too slow most of the time. Swimming pool is very small.
This hotel is in an excellent location with parking next door at a public carpark. All the famous sights are minutes away. We had a very large comfortable room opening onto the garden.
Great bathroom, good service, very clean. Close to Railway and bus stations. Easy walk to town
The bathroom was very clean
This hotel belong to the 60s.. the corridors were dark and smelly..... the bed and beddings were archaic... and wifi was the worse I have seen. The TV in the room kept freezing and it took forever to get a technician to take a look at it........After the technician supposedly fixed it.... it stopped working again the next day again.. so I just gave up watching the TV.. Breakfast was a disaster with the offering being poor and not well prepared.. had to pay extra to get scrambled egg
Spacious rooms, excellent facilities, clean, courteous helpful Reception staff. The room and bathroom very adequate and well maintained.
Lift to 2nd floor not operational so had to carry bags up one floor. Should be a priority repair if possible for a hotel of this standard or restrict accommodation to lift accessible rooms for a short period.
Parking underground, location, beautiful town walls, good breakfast
A.C is turned off on September 29 no matter what. The last two nights of our stay were unbearably hot, especially with the heavy duvet!
Avignon is lively and beautiful. Definitely a top location for enjoying Provence. The hotel has underground car parking with elevator service, is close to train depot for rail travelers and adjacent to the old city. Room are spacious, clean and comfortable.
They don't have loading zone for auto travelers and the underground parking is not well marked. Only an issue when first arriving.
good sheets and shower
Parking is not included and very difficult to pass the gate with larger car
Good location, very comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Car park right below the hotel is very convenient.
Wifi can be better, as not always able to get connected.
large room and quietness
parking was inconveniently located in a nearby parking station, which was not easily accessed
The hotel is located almost in front of the rail station. Out side the walled city but a pleasant 20 minute walk to the town center. The rooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable. On one occasion during our 5 day stay we had issue with a sewerage smell coming from the shower recess but on advising reception were quickly moved to another room. Very happy with the service we received.
There was nothing we did not like about this hotel.
Very quiet hotel room overlooking garden. Ease of access into Avignon. Good size of room. Helpful staff.
Housekeeping was a little erratic. Air-conditioning could have been better and was a little noisy.
Location next to city train station was ideal.
Wifi was so poor as to be unusable. I would not recommend the hotel for a business traveller.
Location and staff were v friendly and helpful
Swimming pool more like a bird bath. Restaurant badly needs renovation
We arrived by Eurostar, and it couldn't have been easier to find and then walk to the hotel. The reception from the staff was first class. They were friendly and very cooperative. The room was spotlessly clean and spacious. From the hotel it was very easy to walk to all of the famed medieval structures of Central Avignon. Bus and train travel to all of the roman influenced towns etc. was very close to the hotel. All-in- all it was perfect for a base for the Provence.
The staff that we dealt with were lovely - polite and very welcoming. We had a lovely large, clean room with separate sitting room and a balcony overlooking the garden. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was large with both a separate shower and bath and was bright and fresh.
Corridors and hallways to rooms are in need of refreshment.
We had a wonderful room with French doors leading onto courtyard, beautiful room and lounge area. Excellent service and staff and just beside the old town walls.
Hotel has a great location and staff very welcoming on arrive. Our room was very clean and Large, the separate lounge area is great for Family's. We loved the pool area even though it's a bit on the small size but for a centrally located hotel is perfectly except able.
The hall ways are pretty dark and need an overhaul. The room could do with a make over too. We thought it was a bit pricey in regard to the faded decor.
Lovely large room excellent bathroom and shower overlooking nice patio good breakfast choices
Poor WiFi unable to get my e-mails Not able to eat in the restaurant of an evening.
