Château d'Avanton

Good location for Futuroscope. Far better than a chain hotel

Beautiful historic grand house, Le Chateaux D'Avanton is a minor chateaux, (but a major responsibility!) which is being run in summer time as a bed and breakfast. The setting is charming and the owner welcomed us warmly. Not sure if this applies to all the rooms, but ours, Mazarin, had a small kitchen (with hob, microwave and kettle) which was perfect as we wanted to stay in after a long drive and enjoy a simple supper without having to go out again looking for restaurants. (Good eating out advice is offered by French, Spanish and English language information leaflets in the room though).

It's minor, would not put us off staying here again: the en-suite bathroom is a compromise, due to lack of suitable space, it has been fitted into a corner under the massive beams. It is therefore rather cramped in there and very easy to bang one's head in the night, but the owner did give us a clear warning at check-in though!

Being able to stay and sleep in a genuine 450 years + French chateau was a wonderful experience, and one of the highlights of our three months in Europe. The hospitality of our host Andre (in the absence of his wife Vivian) was wonderful and our 'Mazarin' double room was a unique experience.

The Chateau d'Avanton is not a hotel in the conventional sense. It is a highly unusual b&b with 5 rooms and apartments in a 16th century chateau which the owners are restoring. Our room was at the top of one of the wings with exposed beams and an eclectic mix of furniture, sadly not antiques although at the price that is not surprising. We were welcomed by the owner who was very pleasant and helpful but there are no staff as you might expect in a hotel. The chateau doesn't have a restaurant although a very good breakfast buffet was provided. However, not far away in Neuville we had one of the best meals of our life in a Michelin starred restaurant recommended by the owner of the chateau. I would recommend the Chateau d'Avanton for its quirky charm - an interesting experience particularly for an overnight stay en route north although the presence of a kitchen area in the room suggests others may like the idea of staying a few days for touring or visiting nearby Futurescope in a semi self-catering way.

There was nothing to dislike but we weren't expecting quite so little in the way of "staff". On the other hand, once we had understood the form, we enjoyed the stay.

A charming and interesting old chateau - a genuine chateau (rather than a glorified farmhouse) which is fascinating to explore. The owner is very helpful and there are great dining options nearby.

We were in the attic which was a little quirky and might not suit some people, however, it was a great experience and we enjoyed our stay.

Everything. The building is absolutely charming and just the kind of place that we like. The staff were friendly and relaxed, the room was clean, comfortable and spacious, and the breakfast was the best we had on the whole of our trip.

It felt like luxury but was incredibly cheap in comparison to the closets I've spent more for in Hong Kong. My wife was upset at us having to leave Poitiers and head out of town but once we arrived at the chateau she understood why I had booked it. It was so worth it. A great room with a kitchen and breakfast in a wonderful dining room and the owners are super. There's a shop/cafe in town, but we found it just as it was closing (turn left, not right), so we were thankful to have brought food with us for dinner. There are buses to Poitiers if, like us, you don't have a car, but the taxi wasn't bad at about 15 euro each way. If you cycle, there's a club that has rides every Sunday for which there's a detailed route and schedule posted and I'd love to go back just to go for a ride and stay again, only for a few days.

The ambience of the chateau was fantastic. The quietness of the surrounding wheat fields and the tranquility sitting outside by the pool as we did one day for lunch. Our host vivienne was a great help fom recommending day trips to Poitiers to booking a dinner at the areas one star Michelin restaurant. Even climbing the very well worn wide stairs was not as painful with luggage as it could have been as the history of the chateau was omnipresent The rooms were as described but quite spacious and comfortable and the breakfast ok.

Beautiful and charming castle in the middle of small town, surounded by fields. Our room has been situated in the Keep (two levels) and we have got good view for four directions of Earth. Furnitures were antique inside the Keep. The kitchen in our room was well equipped. Excellent self-service breakfast in marvellous dinning room. Staff was very nice and helpful. Thank You.

We recently stayed at this beautiful Chateau and we found it to be a unique, wonderful experience. We are so glad that we found this magic place to stay. Our hosts Viviene and Andre made us most welcome and were extremely helpful and accommodating. We would love to come back and stay longer next time. We would definitely recommend this Chateau to others.

The accomodation is original, you feel like in another time, and with children, this is great. The Donjon double room is large, but there is only one bathroom attached to the downstairs room, so that at night, it might become a bit hazardous. The breakfast is also very nice, with good quality producsts.

You have to call when you arrive, since there is not always somebody there to give you the keys.

We enjoyed the whole experience. The Chateau is converted into holiday apartments, with their own little kitchen/dining rooms. However, breakfast is included so there is no need to self cater if you prefer not to. Local Restaurants are excellent. We stayed for only one night whist en route to Spain, but intend to return soon and explore the Region. It is within easy reach of Futuroscope.

The village is small and the restaurants are a short drive. It was not a problem for us but it might be for some people.

Nous y ont séjourné 3 nuits. Personne est venu ranger, aerer la chambre ni nettoyer le lavabo, soit ni un minimum. Dommage.

L'excellent accueil de notre hôtesse. L'hébergement dans un château du 16e en toute simplicité. Le côté spacieux de la chambre.

Todo! Es encantador, la habitación hermosa, decorada con muebles antiguos, baño moderno y hasta una cocina completa para cocinar lo que quieras. La propietaria es muy simpática y además habla bien español.
