Red flag #1: The nice lady that checked me in was wearing an apron. Clearly, she was a cook for the restaurant below the hostel. Not a huge deal, really. Just odd. And, in retrospect, a foreshadowing of the weird things to come.
Red flag #2: The manager, who showed me to my room, had fingernails like something out of Nosferatu. Also, he was wearing Crocs, which is arguably worse than the fingernails. Again, not the worst thing in the world, but a bit strange.
Red flag #3: There was no handle on the front door. Let me re-iterate: the mechanism that allows a person with one or more hands to easily grasp and thereby swing open a door, was not present. I had to jam my fingers in between the door and doorframe and pry it open each time I wanted to leave. Oh, and since there was no handle, there was also nothing keeping the door from being pushed open from the outside.
Red flag #4: There was no handle on the bathroom door either. They graciously stuffed some toilet paper into the keyhole of the door to prevent passersby from glaring in. Finally, I can poop in peace. Oh wait, just like the front door, the bathroom door could also be simply pushed open from the outside. NervousPoop.com
Red flag #5: The light in the bathroom did not work. Fret not, my friends, I wasn't forced to answer nature’s call in the dark because they oh-so-cleverly installed (set atop a cupboard) a desk lamp. Perfect.
Side note: In the time it took for me to mentally process all of the previous red flags, two roommates joined me both in the room and in astonishment over the conditions.
Red flag #6: Within the first five hours of my stay, there were as many knocks on the door followed immediately by the manager coming into our room sans a “come in” or any kind acknowledgement on the part of the occupants. No privacy whatsoever!
One such time, the door swung open and the three of us turned our heads to see who was invading our privacy this time.
The wifi was fast and the location was pretty good (just down the street from the Nice Ville train station.
