The Art Deco style and the location Reception staff were not welcoming nor particularly bothered. The room was rather plain, considering the price and the reputation of the hotel. Very few facilities in the room (no possibility of making tea or coffe; no fridge; no bottle of mineral water or light snack on offer as a welcome gesture).

- Friendly & helpful staff - Price - Location - The size of the room. I was travelling by car and didn't know where the hotel carpark was beforehand. It was difficult finding parking in order to check-in and ask where the parking was. Not a great variety on the menu for room-service.

Location. Public rooms. Quiet room with good blackout shutters. Clean room, soft furnishings and linen. Car park difficult to locate. Whilst the Splendid is indeed splendid for location, outside areas and public rooms, the room we had was very shabby with peeling paint and wallpaper. There was a small fridge in the room which was unplugged and didn't work when plugged in.

Staying at the Splendid in Dax: Delightfully decadent. We decided to stay in Dax on our way from Brittany to Madrid, in order to cut the trip, and be off the beaten track. We travelled as an extended family, with my wife, my daughter, her husband, their 4 children (13, 10, 6, 4), and our dog. Arriving in Dax from the North makes you wonder if you have made the right choice, until you see the hotel front across the bridge. A facade from the 30s, gleaming white. Streamlined design. Then you enter the great hall, and it is like stepping 80 years back. 30 feet high ceilings, mirror columns, art deco decoration. The bedrooms match the general impression, except for the beds that have obviously been updated.... Dinner should not be missed, in a grand dining room, with white cloth and napkins, full sets of glass, and an ushed atmosphere. Still welcoming for young children. The staff was absolutely friendly and accomodating, including a somewhat surrealisticly absent minded Maitre d'. The standard menu, at 29€, should not be missed, slightly better in concept than execution, but still well worth it, and Bordeaux wines at prices not seen in years....

The appearance of the hotel lobby and downstairs is really lovely and the terrace is very pleasant. The bedrooms do not match the downstairs and are rather "tired" looking and need modernsing and especially new beds.
