Overall, given the high ratings and primarily positive reviews, we were disappointed with Marais Home--it just was not what we expected. That said, other than the first issue listed below, most of the following cons are a matter of preference, not major failings of the hotel. I am listing them only for others to consider.
--Cleanliness: Some fecal matter in toilet when we arrived. (The front desk professional apologized profusely for this and assured me that she would communicate the issue to housekeeping. Everything else seemed to be clean.)
--Room size/design: Classic Queen room was extremely small, even by Paris standards. This was aggravated by the inconvenient furnishings. Examples: Night stands and desk w/o drawers. Cube stool at end of bed--too low to sit on; not big enough for a luggage stand; no room space to put it in front of chair for feet. Bulky faux fur throw at foot of bed--used to protect duvet; too dirty for blanket. We had to put the cube, throw (and our luggage) in the shower or in front of the door in order to walk to the closet/bed.
--Noise: Hotel is located on busy boulevard in area with lively local nightlife (i.e. clubs, bars) for 20-somethings. We were there on New Year's Eve (and one other night), so we experienced this at its height. Though we were on the 5th floor and not facing the street (as requested), we could hear noise from the street and nearby apartments (ear plugs solved the problem for us).
--Location: Upon arrival, hotel guests are greeted with huge graffiti statement "I just had sex!" on nearby wall (albeit this could be taken as a good omen ;). Also, we were advised by locals to avoid some nearby streets at night for safety purposes.
--Comfort: We found the bed to be uncomfortably soft and unsupportive.
The front desk and breakfast room staff could not have been more helpful and professional. Not only were they polite and patient, but they went out of their way to anticipate our needs. For example, when we decided to shorten our stay, the professional on-duty checked to see if there was a way for us to avoid a cancellation penalty. Then, the next day, her colleague who was on-duty stopped us on our way out to breakfast to let us know that he had adjusted our bill and made sure that Booking.com would also be notified and charge us correctly. Everyone we encountered at the front desk and in the breakfast room was a consummate professional--wonderful representatives for the hotel.
Location: Across the street from the top of the 3rd arrondissement (Haut Marais). Not a touristy area. Close to reasonably priced and good quality (cafe) bars, bistros and brasseries.
Ambiance: Spacious lobby with contemporary decor, as well as gratuit coffee/tea and madeleines/croissants available at all times.
