“We found the staff extremely attentive and helpful. There was one small 'glitch' and that was resolved in a very prompt, courteous and generous manner. Probably the best guide to a hotel is how staff deal with the unexpected, and they came out 5 * as far was we were concerned. The building is very tastefully renovated and we wish we had been staying more than our one night.”

Brasserie food very good - service excellent. Car parking office - a short walk from the hotel. However, you were required to leave your keys behind reception hanging on a board - the reception was not always manned - and there was no-one at the car park. The explanation - to enable as many cars as possible to be parked there - the valet may have to move cars. No receipt for keys - and the lack of security around leaving a lot of keys on display in the public reception area was concerning.

* Cute and stylish, yet very comfortable rooms. * Very comfortable beds. * Fabulous restaurant (splendid soufflé au Grand Marnier). * Very good location. * Some accessibility problems (several narrow stairs, tiny elevation). It could be a problem if you are on wheelchair, or just if you travel with heavy suitcases.

We enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and courteous. The room was lovely. Fabric on the walls and real oil paintings. An easy walk to the cathedral. Lots of places to eat nearby. Great soaking tub. Navigating to the parking area is easy once you know to turn right past the hotel. You will have to bring your bags about a block and a half, then up the stairs into the hotel.

The location was great as our main purpose was to visit the cathedral. Although our sat nav took us on a detour and we did not spot the hotel immediately, there is parking for 15 mins at the side of the hotel while you check in.The receptionist was extremely helpful as we checked in giving us a guide book of the city and information on where to eat. We also left our car keys for the valet to park our car for us and return it the next day. Our room was spacious and extremely comfortable with fabulous bathroom and this was just a standard room. The food in the Brasserie was good and moderately priced.

We had two connecting rooms for our party of six. Everything was very nice and thenbed was super comfortable. Fantastic location as well. We could see the cathedral spires from our room. Breakfast was pricey and not included. We went over to McD instead. Lots of bakeries in the area as well.

The Hotel was in a great location for sightseeing around Chartres. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. The food was excellent, we had dinner and the buffet breakfast. Found the hotel to be extremely warm, not sure what it would be like in the summer months. We booked a basic room and were looking down onto the restaurante roof and when we opened the windows the noise was unbearable from the ventilation system. Also we had no net curtains so were very overlooked.

Chartres is a great little town to visit as a day rip from Paris. We used it as an end to our 9 day France trip as it is fairly close to the Paris airports. The hotel was a nice place to stay in Chartres for our purposes. Front desk people were very helpful - 2 gentlemen on the day we were there were especially courteous and helpful. Parking is tight luckily I had made a reservation which I would recommend.

We have stayed several times at this hospitable, very comfortable hotel. The spa is excellent, the deluxe rooms are lovely and the food in both restaurants is very good and we love the bar. Friday night live jazz is very atmospheric We will be back on many occasions, I think.

We first stayed in the hotel 46 years ago, it was good to see the recent refurbishment has paid off, we had a very comfortable room. We had our evening meal in the Brasserie which was new to us last year, very very busy this year, but the food was good. Breakfast is always a mute point in France at fifteen euros, it always seems expensive, but it was a good breakfast!

Great hotel, great value. The new spa was lovely - lots of different elements. The service in the hotel was very friendly. The deluxe room was great, well equipped and spacious. The food in the brasserie was very good - we have eaten before in the excellent Michelin one star restaurant. The bar is fab too - there was some good quality jazz piano and guitar on a Friday evening. Great stop over.

La Grand Monarque is a proper hotel which exudes class and style but at a sensible cost. You feel you have stayed in somewhere special and not just at yet another hotel. The michelin restaurant was great value and the breakfast the best I have enjoyed in a long time. Faultless all round.

Great location in Centre, fairly close to station. Two restaurants rated well by other travellers. The room I had was spacious and comfortable. Dinner was ok in the brasserie, fair priced for Chartres that is a fairly expensive place to visit anyway. Seemed to have a lot of customers of the street including some regulars. Overall as expected - slight disappointing and could be so much better with a small attention to details. Generally clean but far from perfect in respect of dust in some areas. My room had an "antique" feel including a mirror that was certainly old, but extremely shabby, and in need of tlc (or putting in a skip). Not all rooms have air-con though so take care of that. I didn’t need it (January 2012). My room was at the form but was not noisy - but would be if the windows were opened as the roads outside is busy at times. Breakfast @ €15 was far from the best for this class of hotel, though the coffee was good. As usual for all Hotels this was an overpriced serve yourself Buffett but I have seen better selection / more extensive in Campanile for example.

Great location in the centres of Chartres near to the cathedral. Friendly staff, lovely room and fabulous spa - just wished we'd had longer there to use it more! The front entrance doesn't do the hotel justice and the carpets throughout need cleaning or replacing with new ones!

The hotel's close proximity to the town centre (2 mins walk), the Cathredral (5 mins walk), train station (10 mins walk) makes this an ideal hotel to stay in, it is a well kept/clean hotel with very courteous staff in all areas of the hotel. Good value for money based on the accommodation we had of a double room on the first floor at the side of the hotel. Breakfast was standard continental plus scrambled/boiled eggs ham/cheeses, all serve yourself but waiting staff were on hand. We didn't eat in the hotel for dinner We were woken both mornings of our stay by bin emptying at 6am, which we reported to reception but they seemed to disregard as a just a nuisance to us.

This was our 7th stay at le grand monarque in the last 17 years. The upgrade/refurbishing of the lobby and bar is nicely done, although I missed very much the painting of the reclining gypsy girl that used to hang in the breakfast area. She was an old friend to greet on each visit. As was the dog in the lobby - now deceased, I presume. The underground parking nearby is a great convenience. I would happily recommend the hotel to friends and have already done so a couple of times. Large colorful flower pots strategically positioned around the perimeters of the outside eating terrace would greatly enhance the visual impression from the street.

The hotel has a certain air of luxury about it, though our room was far from luxurious (not even a head-board on the bed!). Considering all the times I have stayed at the hotel (and in many other Best Westerns), I am disappointed that I have never been offered an upgrade, as I have often been in comparable hotel chains. The most positive aspect of staying in Chartres is the cathedral and the town itself. The breakfast was - awful! There is no other word to describe it. The coffee came out of a machine and tasted like water, and the tea came with the tea-bag dipped in lukewarm water and milk. I'm amazed that with all the English customers that stay at the hotel, no one has learnt how to make tea.
