“This is a unique place. The Abbey is a major site of great historical significance being the burial site of Eleanor of Aquitane. The Abbey is beautiful and the Hotel is exceptional. The restaurant is of the highest standard and the total experience is excellent and great value.I would recommend highly.”

It has been a really unusual and most memorable stay. The main attraction of this hotel is not some special comfort or anything like that. The rooms are quite modest, although very clean and equipped with all the necessary facilities. However, the main attraction is the atmosphere. Staying in an abbey and being able to walk the abbey grounds among historical bulidings, especially after dark (the buildings are illuminated, some in a very fine way), is a most memorable experience. The hotel restaurant is also very good. It looks pricey but in Paris or other tourist places similar food and service would cost much more. The stuff was most helpful and spoke passable English. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to escape the crouds and enjoy a most memorable and unusual experience. Beware though that the abbey itself was badly damaged during and after the French revolution, so while the buildings are restored, there are very few original historical artefacts left. Still, the abbey is certainly worth a visit, and the ability to stay on the grounds and enjoy the unique atmosphere is a great opportunity that should not be missed.

History, location, style, were all good to excellent. Food was pretentious, and insufficient, and rooms sparsely furnished, especially for guests staying more that one night. No help with luggage.

This is a very unique hotel in a great setting. Some have complained about how far the parking is from the hotel, but you can drive up to the hotel to drop or pickup bags, so this isn't a big deal. The restaurant is outstanding and shouldn't be missed.

A very unusual, historic and peaceful location. The rooms are comfortable and the whole experience is very relaxing. The staff are very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay. Although comfortable, the rooms are rather small and a little dated. It could have offered a more reasonably priced bistro style choice of food as an option to the fine dining restaurant.

Peaceful location, different from the nornal hotel experience. Dinner beautifully served and tasted delicious with an English explanation for us! In the week there is a set menu, no choice, for 39 euros but it is buy one get one free for a gourmet meal. The sizes looked minute but they are deceptive. We also saw the abbey and grouds for free although there is a discounted ticket for residents. Not really a complaint but found the hotel section of the abbey difficult to locate. The signs to it are cerise pink and not arrows as expected for directions so we drove past them 3 times before realising .That was after the staff in the ticket office gave us directions! There is a tax to pay for old buildings on top of the city tax which is not mentioned until you get your bill!

Fantastic Location. You stay within the grounds of the abbey where you can wander around and take in the site in evening. Can be quite difficult to find the entrance to the Hotel part of the abbey - and the parking signs are confusing, but the staff are very helpful. We stayed at the abbey and walked into the village for food - several places to choose from, all looked very nice.

The setting within the grounds of the ancient abbey. A good attitude of the staff was lacking. After waiting at reception we received a cold greeting. The information given regarding visiting the abbey was incorrect. The bar was unattended. Generally, the staff were sloppy, some areas untidy and altogether it was a disappointing stay.

An absolutely fabulous location. We were greeted by very good and helpful reception staff. Our room was quite small, but clean, well serviced an adequate. We had excellent breakfasts and very good dinners in the restaurant "in the cloisters", a charming setting. All the staff in the dining areas were very polite, helpful and professional. Food was very good as were the wines and reasonably priced. A very dusty walk from the car park. Room was a little dated and small with no tea or coffee making facilities. The table d'hote menu was exactly the same each day. We were also researching the possibility of taking a party of like minded Rotarians to the hotel in May of 2012 only to be advised that it will be closed for 18months for refurbishment and upgrading. We sincerely hope that it is not upgraded to such an extent that the "value for money" is lost in what we considered to be a super location.

Excellent restaurant in lovely setting. You can walk around the monastery complex in the evening. I was there during a heatwave, so would have appreciated air conditioning in the room.

The history of the place is fascinating. It is beautiful - the dining is an experience (a good one!) though the table we were given for our expensive dinner was not well situated - as the dining room was not particularly busy I could not understand this. The bedrooms, whilst small, are well- designed and well-equipped and very comfortable. We got a good welcome by reception. Bike hire is available. The village of Fontevraud is extremely quiet - dead in fact - not much to do once you've eaten.

Lovely quiet establishment. Restaurant experience was exceptional - one of the best meals we've ever had, and the setting in the cloisters added to the experience. Visiting the Abbey and surrounds was also an historical treat. Despite the fact it was high summer, there weren't a lot of people around unlike most of the chateaux in the Loire. A lovely serene place to visit and stay at. A little confusing to find the entrance if you arrive late and the doors are shut. Sign says Hotel /Restaurant St Lazaire and we thought at first that it referred to another establishment. There's an intercom near big doors to talk to reception.

The hotel, situated within the extensive abbey grounds, is an ideal location for relaxation and exploring the countryside and the nearby towns of Chinon and Saumur. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food served was superb. Why don't French hotels provide tea/coffee making facilities within the guest rooms - it would be helpful.

Its location within the grounds of Fontevraud Abbey. The price seemed steep but this did include "free" entry to the abbey. Our room was booked as a "superior" room which was misleading. It was adequately appointed but fairly basic. The table service in the restaurant was slow and the food was the most disappointing of all hotels we stayed in.

The restaurant is delightful and the staff very friendly and efficient. The fact that a seminar was in progress did not disturb the individual customers which is to be commended. Having the use of a lift is also welcome in such an antique monument. The parking lot is very distant. Thankfully the permission to drive near for unloading was welcome.
