The area is not that pretty. You'll find much more picturesue pockets of Paris, but you'll also pay a premium for another room there. Why not just stay here and then walk to the cute spots in the day? The stairs are epic! I stayed on the 6th floor for the first time on my last stay and you are certainly breathless when you arrive at your room! Add on a 15 kilo backpack when I arrived from the airport and I had to give myself a pep-talk before attempting the stairs! If you're older or have a heavy suitcase, why not request a room on a lower floor when you book. Also, there are many African Frenchmen who hang around the area in the day. Some may find that intimidating. Personally, I can tell you as a very short, blonde, female foreigner, they have their own things going on and just don't really speak to you at all. Just head out with a determined step and get on your way, you'll be Fine! The bar on the corner 'Etoile d'Afrique" can get rowdy when there is a football game on, I lost a night of sleep to drunken revellers on my last stay, but every other night was fine.
I really like how this place is just 10 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord, so arriving on the Eurostar, you're almost home as soon as you walk out of the station. Trains to Orly and Chatles de Gaulle airports also pass through Gare du Nord too, so it's really great transport-wise when you arrive into Paris. If you want to catch the metro to sight see, then the Chateau d'Eau metro stop is very close too. But I prefer to walk down the road to the Seine river, passing shops, restaurants and Parisian folk going about their day. The walk from hotel to river is just 20 minutes or so and you're right there at Ile de la Cite & the Notre Dame cathedral. The rooms are very simple, but clean and functional, the bathrooms are small and simple too, but very convenient to have en suites in such a cheap hotel. It's never cold in the rooms either, which is good. The breakfast each morning for just €6 is excellent: croissant, baguette, butter, jam, tea/ coffee or hot choc, plus cold juice! Delish and so worth the price! Reception takes the keys as you leave the building,so you never have to worry about losing your room key, which I like. And there is a small safe in the room for your valuables. I stay here every time I go to Paris. Pure convenience and a great price win every time.
