Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.

First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle, listed on UNESCO World Heritage registry, Its history is well documented and presented, the staff at the castle are all so friendly and kind, they tried to give me very personal time during the visit even though my exit after the closing hour was a bit protracted because I had taken a wrong "route" - wandered into the last section of the visit first and did the exploration in the reverse order! The town itself was bucolic and relaxed, clean, serene, and safe. All the people I encountered (* except one lady, who probably was not from this town!) from shops to restaurants to tourist office to streets were very pleasant and honest (when I innocently picked up oranges to buy in a basket, for example, the fruit shop lady spontaneously inspected each pieces carefully and pointed out one of them was slightly damaged, and went to pick up a better replacement for me, which she didn't have to do!) There were a lots of region specific products, as well as international products (such as Italian Truffles, Italian fur products!), interesting and delicious food to eat, and the climate is generally much warmer than other parts of France. Sunny happy rational place like this, which retained "good old France" aspects restores in a visitor's heart rare hopes for humanity! It also seemed that there is a good size of international community with expats who settled down. You can experience exotic encounters here, so, I would not say this town is a closed up, hermetic, mono-cultural location, nor it is xenophobic.

We were very surprised at the quality of the restoration.
We were very surprised at the quality of the restoration. Also, that there are so many eating places within the walls - some a lot better than others.
Interesting displays and museums. A visit to the bascilica and castle are musts.
The bakery associated with the hotel is wonderful, especially for breakfast. Really tastefully furnished and delicious pasties. La Boulangerie de la Cité.

We really liked the walled cite , unfortunately we chose a very wet and windy day in February. There were plenty of places to keep dry within the castle though.
We had dinner in a couple of restaurants, both were absolutely fine.
We didn't think much of the Bastide, it was a bit worn out and needed some tlc. I'm sure if you visited in the summer it would of been much nicer.
The walk across the old bridge over the river is pleasant.

It is a lovely town to walk around in.
It is a lovely town to walk around in. However it is better to arrive Tuesday as there are a lot of restaurants and shops that are closed Sunday and Monday. There are some very good places to dine and a few not very good ones.
Bistro Chez Alice was the best one that I ate at.
La cité was too cold that day and the restaurant that I ste in was terrible.
Lots of junky tourists shops amid a few very high end ones…They leather clothing shop was #1++++. Expensive but top quality.

We caught the train here from Paris.
We caught the train here from Paris. The views of the walled city as we walked from the station were amazing. Coming from Australia, where there is nothing like this city, it was a sensory feast. Being able to access, walk around and enjoy the old walled city for no cost was excellent. There were many dining options, most serving Cassoulet, the local dish this region is famed for. The walled city involves a steep climb from river side, but can be accessed on the opposite side by a more accessible route. Definitely put it on your itinerary.

Great place for a long weekend.
Great place for a long weekend. Flights cheap and direct from Manchester making it so accessible especially with the bus pick up directly from the airport which is aligned with flight arrivals. Lots to do in Carcassonne but also a great base to explore further afield. We didn't have a car and filled our time (arriving Sat, leaving Monday). The train station is also very convenient if you wanted to get a train to Toulouse or the coast. We will definitely come back.
We had not pre-booked early check-in but the staff at the reception was most helpful in arranging this for us when we arrived. The room was spacious and very comfortable, including the bed and pillows, with plenty of options for charging our devices and very clean. The hotel is ideally located to visit the old city as it is steps away from the Pont Vieux. The reception staff was also very helpful in arranging for a taxi for our departure. The area is quiet and we felt quite safe walking around. We would definitely stay again.
The house and the host/owner are wonderful: Beautifully and lovingly restored property close to all Carcassone attractions. The bed and amenities were perfect.
Regis, the owner, is a friendly and personable host. He prepared a delicious breakfast every day for his guests and provided helpful dinner recommendations. This is one of the best B&B we stayed in Europe (and we do travel a lot). We simple loved our stay and hope to come back. Merci Regis!
Great location right beside Carcassonne old town only a short stroll up the street.
Not many hotels have large family rooms - the Aragon family room takes 5 which suited us perfectly with 3 kids.
Good value given we only had to book 1 room for our family.
Pool is a nice bonus to cool off after wandering around the crowded old town.
Nice view of the old town from our room.
Parking included.
Everything clean and kept well.
Lovely hotel in narrow Street with plenty of little bars & restaurants, tucked away under medieval city walls. A great location for either old or new city , stroll along river or take a boat trip on canal, plenty of choice 😀.Hotel has a pretty courtyard garden in which to have breakfast or just sit and relax. Rooms a good size & kept spotlessly clean ! We had a great time, what's not to like . 😀😀👍
Superb location right next to the Narbonnaise Gate into the medieval city. Really friendly staff. Hotel had a really nice atmosphere. On site car parking (15 euros per day). Nice room. Old style hotel but with modern style decorations and fittings. Very good continental buffet breakfast. Small but very good swimming pool. There are cheaper hotels in Carcassonne but this hotel is worth the extra cost.
The staff went the extra mile for us......we were driving through southern France in a bright red FIAT 500 rental car in early December and this little hotel worked great for us. The hotel was almost empty because it was out of season but we got a nice room at a very inexpensive price. Then, the staff got up in the morning and made a lovely breakfast just for us.
Awesome views of the castle. The free parking was great and we were able to walk to the castle from the hotel. The restaurant at the hotel was one of our favorites in France. The lady that managed the breakfast is the mornings is over the top nice and helpful! The price of the hotel and restaurant were a great deal too.
Really liked the location and the rustic building. We didn't have breakfast but it looked very good. The bar was handy and reasonably priced for a quick round before heading off out to explore.
The hotel is literally in the middle of the old town so it's ideal for a short stay. Highly recommend!
Just a short walk from the hotel is the wonderful Cité de Carcassonne. I was able to get up early in the morning and walk to the castle and was able to go around the castle without any people. I wish I had had a balcony, but that’s OK. I highly recommend this hotel.
The location is perfect. Is is just a short walk to the medieval city. The little pool was clean and sunny and the bed was very comfy. The hotel bar had a good range of drinks. Although it is on a road the windows effectively block out the noise.
Walking distance to the medieval city and old town. The room was big, comfortable and the children loved the bunkbeds. The hotel decor is fun, with lots of references to knights and Cavaliers. Parking is free of charge. The breakfast was good.
The location was great (near the medieval city and near the city centre). That is the main benefit of the appartment. There were some items in the kitchen thst you could use, but not everything you may need (e.g. Glasses to drink water)
Brilliant location right by the bridge to the old town. Fabulous view from rooftop bar. Modern, clean comfortable hotel. Nice small indoor pool area. Water dispensers on each floor are a plus too.
Beautiful historical house within walking distance of the old town, the medieval city & the canal du midi. Lovely cool air conditioned room & gorgeous breakfast served in the courtyard garden.
It was close to the medieval city and very quiet (although it is quite a long walk, about 25 mins, to the nearest small supermarket). The host was responsive when we had a couple of issues.
The location is wonderful- the view of Carcassone is great and it’s about a three minute walk to get into the old city. The view at night is great. There is ample free parking.
