Aigues Mortes is a magical and fascinating place that time forgot. There's also everything to do - bike riding, beaches, museums and monuments, horse riding, bird watching, bullfighting, infinite walks into the horizon - and the Villa Mazarin is the perfect place to do it all from. Inside the square, Mediaeval walled-in village, surrounded by marshes, black bulls, white horses and a whole lot of sky, the hotel is warm, luxurious and regally decorated. Whether you just want a romantic break or are searching for the holy grail, the hotel fires one's imagination. Our room (the Prestige) was enormous with an equally vast bathroom, with bath and shower, double sink, large tv - all a family of four could want. The pool, jacuzzi and and steam room were spacious with an indulgent and relaxed atmosphere, newspapers, loungers, etc. which was a real joy especially on a cold weekend in January. We also really appreciated that it stayed open till 12pm. We had a good dinner there, a menu option of 29€. The hotel is impressively managed and guests are treated with a distant respect. On the downside, the breakfast was 14€ but pretty ordinary with no cooked option.

The welcome by staff was very warm. The hotel was well located inside the citidel, but near to the free parking outside the walls. It was beautifully situated around an open courtyard with large trees. All the public rooms of the hotel were beautifully appointed. The room was a good size and comfortable, with terri-cloth robes and slippers provided for guests. The very best was the beautiful heated indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, and sauna that was available for guests from 8 AM until midnight. We made very good use of that! We also liked Henri IV, the hotel cat. We ate breakfast in the lovely garden conservatory one morning. We had a good breakfast, but for 14 euros we expected something more special. We felt that the breakfast should be no more than 8 or 10 euros per person. Because of the prices, we chose not to eat our main meal at the hotel.

Location; historic building; tranquil garden; friendly staff. Faulty (contaminated?) air conditioning in bedroom. Limited bar service during the day - only manned by front desk receptionist.

Location is fantastic - inside an amazing walled town. Bedroom was spacious. Of the several hotels we stayed at during our 18-day European trip, this one represented the least value for money. It ranked as one of the top two or three we stayed at, but was between 50% and 100% more expensive. The car park entrance was very difficult, although the staff were most helpful and concerned for us and our car. There is no lift within the hotel as the building has a listed status so they cannot alter the fantastic stone stairway. However, there was a lift from the underground carpark to the ground level, but it was out of order. Even if it had been working, there were still some steps to negotiate. Anyone with limited mobility would have to ensure they got a ground floor room, and entered the hotel through the front door rather than from the car park. The bathroom was slightly below the standard we would have expected. All the facilities were there including robes and nice toiletries, but it was let down by having a shower curtain over the bath and a shower curtain in the walk-in shower. The curtain material was basic rather than a luxury feel, and would have been better had it been a glass panel or glass doors. Overall, I would say this is a very nice luxury hotel, but if you pay for the highest priced room and imagine that because you have paid a lot, it will be amazing, then you may feel just a little disappointed.

We stayed at the Villa Mazarin for two nights. We wish we could have stayed there longer. The Receptionists were very helpful and attentive. We did not breakfast at the hotel as preferred to breakfast outside in the town but this was our choice. Dined in the restaurant and had one of our best meals in France. Would definitely return.

Great staff, great location and although the restaurant was not open for dinner the night we were there, the hotel staff referred us to a wonderful restaurant next door. When I struggled with the all French menu, I raced next door to the La Villa Mazarin staff who translated, so we knew what to order for dinner. The room was spacious, the setting absolutely beautiful and I would stay there again.

A unique hotel in superb surroundings - huge unusual bedroom and bathroom. Staff were interesting and interested. Sadly we found the breakfast, although truly excellent, far too expensive. Also the dinner was beyond our means although obviously fantastic.
