The 20th Winter Olympics took place in Turin in 2006. All the skiing facilities of the area were renovated and improved for the event. Today you can still ski like the champions at the Via Lattea resort, which includes Claviere (1760 metres), Sansicario (1700 metres), Sauze d'Oulx (1509 metres), and Sestriere (2035 metres) in Italy, and Montgenèvre (1850 metres) in France. Altogether there are 400 km of pistes, 120 with artificial snow, and 88 lifts. The skiing area offers huge, sunny spaces, and panoramic trails that connect ancient and traditional villages with modern towns. Snowboard and ski-cross tracks are also amazing.

Sestriere is probably the most popular and international resort along Lattea Via (Milky Way) ski circuit. It is set on a hill between Val Chisone and the Valley of Susa, a few kilometres from the French border. It has had the pleasure of hosting a number of World Championships over the years; most notably the 2006 Winter Olympics. It features over 400 kilometres of pistes and, with such a high altitude, you are more or less guaranteed an excellent snowfall. Sestriere is also home to Europe's highest golf course. There are plenty of wellness centres and sports facilities, plus a wide choice of bars and restaurants.

Area information

Just a couple of miles from the Italian border, Montgenèvre is France’s oldest ski resort and the only French part of the famous Milky Way ski circuit. It offers expert, intermediate and beginner slopes as well as nursery slopes and ski schools for the little ones.

The Montgenèvre ski area is served by 39 lifts with chairs and drags and has 60 miles of downhill pistes. Reach the summit at Le Chalet and take in the spectacular vistas before an exhilarating ski back down to the village. Or upgrade to a Milky Way lift pass and explore another 250 miles of slopes across the Italian border.

Snowboarders will enjoy Montgenèvre’s snow park which has a quarter pipe, pro-jump, gap and rope tow. There are also cross-country skiing and snow-shoe trekking available on the resort. Lastly, the whole family is welcome to enjoy the ice-skating rink.

It seem to me as being a little rose-tinted whereby underneath the pretty styling of the interior and it's provision of good quality bedding this is not an otherwise overly different or special place. Breakfast was less than I would have wished for and the room was 'sufficient' in size but not more. Globalement, l'hôtel est parfait : moderne, raffiné, luxueux... Mention spéciale à la décoration montagnarde des chambres, de très bon goût. Enfin, le restaurant est très sympa, le petit déjeuner aussi. Le fait que le hameau soit en travaux a occasionné un tout petit peu de bruit à partir de 8h30, mais tout cela sera fini dès l'automne. Marco et Marina m'ont organisé la ballade sur la Voie Lactée avec un moniteur fort sympathique. De même que la disponibilité, la gentillesse et l'adaptabilité du barman. La décoration est parfaitement adaptée à la montagne, de très bon gout. Je disposais d'une suite très agréable. Ponctuellement, il y a un chantier sur le terrain voisin. Pas de rideaux fins sur les fenêtres; c'était donc soit le grand soleil, soit la nuit noire, avec les tentures épaisses. Réglage du chauffage verrouillé à l'accueil.
