Quiet stay. Laundry facilities. Safe parking. Kitchenette.
Very difficult to find but fortunately a local led us there. Appeared residential not set up for tourists. Even during reception hours it was not always available. Shower was very small and curtain was too short and therefore floor was flooded.
The price (EUR 25 per night in august 2014), spaciousness of the room, kitchenette with self-catering facilities and refrigerator, TV set, free WiFi, A/C (essential in summer!), calm at night, close to the supermarket and boulanger (5 minutes on foot), close to the ramparts (10 minutes on foot), close to the bus stop (Galaxie, 3 minutes on foot, buses no. 4, 7, 9). Note that this is not a hotel but a do-it-yourself student hall of residence - there will be no chambermaid to do your room. In general, I was very satisfied with my stay.
A lot of people had problems with checking in, the procedure is not clear enough, especially what to do when nobody is there. Prior to arrival, you are supposed to get an email with instructions, but it will be only in French – and this is where problems begin because a lot of people do not speak French, or they do not get the email, as it happened in my case. Or they get the email, but the keys are not where they should be. Or they get the email and get the keys, but without the key of the gate to the parking place, which they reserved and paid for. Etc, etc, etc. Since my train was late and I came outside official hours and did not know what to do (I did try to call the management, but couldn’t get through). Finally, I was saved by a very nice young lady, who suddenly appeared with my keys (this is a plus, not a minus), otherwise I would have been “foutu”! Check-in process has to be improved.
Kitchenette great for simple meals Spacious, bright rooms Reasonably clean Not that far from the centre for the price
Check in - arrive at least half an hour late - because the receptionists certainly do! Wifi extemely hit and miss...but at least it's available. Long Dark corridors Totally characterless
The furniture is fine, but the big problem is that they don't offer a better service during weekends. We arrived there after 19:00 sunday afternoon and we didn't get keys for our room and no body helped us.
Website gave incorrect map location that directed us to a disused garage at 2, chemin L'Epi . We never found the place after two hours of searching! Assumed that it was a scam!!
The apartment has very good facilities. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook, very well equipped. The bed room was spacious and clean. The wifi worked really well.
The location is not so good. It is quite walk to the center and the neighborhood does not look very safe in the evenings. The bathroom had a bit sewer type smell.
There were kitchen. The stove(?) was strong enough. There were evevator. We could still go to center by foot.
We could not get toilet paper for two days!!! Even I told the receptionist we couldn't get. No room cleaning while we stayed,No towel chenged for four days. The receptionist wasn't helpful. Even I wrote in English what I wanted, she didn't do anything. It was inconvenient the receptionist didn't speak English.Im not sure if she can understand English or not. All the time she spoke to us in French. Sink in the bathroom was blocked(?). We couldn't turn on the lights for the both room and kitchen.
It was a fully equipped room and kitchen (equipped with the basics). The room had a great tv with 20 french channels. Also a nice little view and full bathroom. The location wasn't too far from the city centre (though it wasn't close either, still a 10 minute walk). It was near a full grocery store and the staff seemed friendly. The room was in good condition. Still offered hotel soap and shampoo (though only when you get there as they don't clean the rooms)
The check in procedure wasn't super clear as their English wasn't the best and so it took me 10 minutes to figure out there email. Same thing with the wifi (which they don't say they have but they do) unfortunately the wifi can be incredibly slow and I'm pretty sure they have blocks on it. They have a box in which your keys are in if reception is closed but it wasn't clear where to drop off when checking out (there is a mail box directly opposite that you put your keys in). They had scheduled reception open times but they had no problem closing up 15-30 minutes early for the day. One couple I ran into never got the email for the code to open the box in the small cabinet so I grabbed my phone and did it for them but if I (or someone else) didn't come along they would have been stuck for a while. It can be a bit noisy sometimes, not in La Salamandre itself (so not the fault of the hotel) but the area was home to students who lived nearby and like to have loud music. Well it wasn't a problem for me (I enjoyed what they played) usually staying out if a city core means quite so it's not garunteed. Lastly, I was there in May but I would not want to be there in mid summer as I don't believe the rooms had air conditioning and it got hot in the room.
The reception always has nobody. There are too many mosquitos in the room. It cost too much compared to the service we got.
The price is very cheap for such a large family room. You have your own kitchen, fridge and microwave. It's quite clean and very suitable for couples.
The reception only available during afternoon. Be careful the email they send to you after your reservation. It will tell you how to check in during the period that nobody in the reception. It's a little far from the city center. No bus directly arrive the city center. IMPORTANT: restaurants near the hotel don't open during the weekend! You can either buy some food from the nearest supermarket to cook yourself or go to restaurants in the city center.
