The location and the proximity to a fabulous old inn and restaurant. The television worked. We booked this hotel because we had stayed there before and it was a really nice olde worlde friendly hotel with a lovely restaurant. . What we found was a set of rooms with the only access up 2 flights of stairs. The lift outside our room (if working -- as we dare not try it) went down to the old reception desk near the restaurant which was locked behind a key coded door. I believe this lack of disability access contravenes the disability discrimination act, There was no breaksfast service even though the booking confirmation said breakfast menu available, no reception, no staff on site and no restaurant. The mattress and pillows were dirty, the toilet did not flush properly, the hot and cold taps were plumbed the wrong way, the fire instructions were not for our room, 2 of the 5 lights did not work and the room was not serviced on the Sunday. I could go on but would need more room than this. Backpackers or students may be ok with it but for mature people it is an insult to us to describe The Abbey as a hotel. This is a fabulous hotel ruined.

Its now incredibly cheap There are no staff on the premises There is no food available. Its very impersonal as you only have key codes to get in to the room and no staff. The description on booking. Com is how the hotel used to be not how it is now. There is no warm welcome, there is no welcome at all!

Good location, comfortable bed, not much else. No staff on arrival. Had to ring mobile No. To find room entry code. What if I hadn't taken phone? No food available, breakfast would have been nice, had to go into town to eat. Although advertised, restaurant closed, Top floor room, would have appreciated use of lift, but it was out or order. Whole place could do with major overhaul, including new carpets and windows. Very noisy plumbing and a long wait for hot water in the bathroom. Shower curtains would stop the floor from getting a good soaking. Aa3* No way.

It's location is the only positive comment I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Everything was totally different than what is described. Facilities are nothing like the photos or advert for the hotel.

price and location the fact that we were not supplied with our 6 digit access code until we arrived at the hotel and the repair man rang the third number he tried in order to get the code. all our phone messages, emails and texts were unanswered in the week previous, so we had to travel not knowing if we would gain access.

The location. The hotel was unstaffed and locked when I arrived and I could not enter. I was informed by another hotel nearby that I should have received code numbers by email in order to enter. I rang the mjb number and was given the code numbers over the phone. That evening two people entered my room while I was in the bathroom and said it was their room. They had been double booked. The following evening when I returned I could not gain entry - along with other guests. We had to wait around for an hour or so before entry was finally organised. Apparently the batteries in the electronic door lock had run down. Generally, my stay was a most unsatisfactory experience.

Hmm...what wasn't to like? Rusty nails replacing cupboard handles, live wires coming out of walls, no staff anywhere only codes to get in which didn't work after a 5 hour journey with small children in car. Avoid until 'renovation' is complete. 'Faulty Towers' extravaganza...best bit was cheap price/danger money!

The hotel is situated in a lovely location right next to the abbey, and is in a very quiet road. The breakfasts were very good, so long as you had the cooked option, otherwise croissants and fruit were not available as advertised. The staff were very pleasant. The hotel claims to have been refurbished, but the quality of the work is very poor, and the fittings are of the cheapest quality, apart from the beds. We were 'upgraded' to a suite which was very poorly furnished, with unmatching very cheap furniture covered in tablecloths. The shower would only work with half the water going through the bath tap and the fitting was falling off the wall. The taps do not turn off completely. There are no towel rails. A running machine was being stored in the lounge area of the suite. There was only one bedside table and no bedside lights; a knob was missing from the dressing table drawers so it couldn't be opened. The floors are laminated, no rugs other than in the suite where there is a stained carpet. We were charged a London price. All in all, very poor.

Staff were friendly. Bed was comfortable. Modern tv. Room was grubby around the edges eg dirty window surrounds. In room kettle had to be used on the floor. Welcoming biscuit tin containing just wrappers and crumbs. No shower. Hand shower attachment difficult to regulate. Thin bedroom walls. Breakfast mediocre. Overall thought that it was wildly overpriced - naively thought that £110 would have meant a better hotel experience. Just goes to show that price is not an indicator of quality.

We were a little concerned when reading some of the reviews for this 'Hotel' but there is no complaints from us - well apart from the fact the cleaner just walked in to put pillowcases on the pillows (although we were there @ 3.55pm) Clean, spacious, tidy and the most comfortable bed. Will book again. The guest that thought it would be a good idea to stand outside just below our room @3am for a chat on their phone.

The hotel is in an excellent location - pretty, historic and very peaceful. The rooms are spacious and light. The rooms are basically furnished, but clean and comfortable. This hotel does not have a reception and uses a key code for gaining access. This system has proved problematic on both occasions we have stayed.

We only stayed one of the 2 nights booked...the main electric went off during the night so we had no heating (lights were on)..so it was really cold, apart from that the room was ok. Neither of the phone numbers I tried connected to anyone... , so couldn't get any power back on. (the central heating didn't work at any time)The maid came about 8.30 and must have reset the trip-switch but by that time we had packed and as we didn't know if it would happen again, we left. So overall not a good experience....I wouldn't stay there again even tho' the price is very cheap.

We booked this within three weeks of staying for two nights; two standard rooms.Pleasantly surprised as were not expecting too much after we had booked and then read the reviews!! Many were not very favourable. We hit lucky, our two rooms had comfy beds and ensuite facilities. We had the facilities that was stated online. Were very pleasantly surprised to get a change of towels for the second nght stay. For the special offer price; was good value. We gather from other guests that some were rooms only and shared toilets and bathroom facilities. Would not have been happy with that even if the rooms were offered at discount rates. The hotel itself needs some love and attention and there are one or two safety issues I.E. double socket in one the the standard rooms was broken and exposed. At the time of stay no facilities for parking the car.

We love the layout and designed of the selfcontained apartment. The furnitures of high quality ,bed very confortable. Carpet very clean and the heating in the apartment very satisfactory.Generally speaking the orientation of the apartment excellent. The Kettle and the Microwave was a great access to the apartment. Clean sheet and pillowcase and duva made our night rest very confortable. From the health and safety aspects: The bath need antislip mats and support safety grips to supprot getting in and out of the bath tub. The bath could benefit from a shower protective water screen to prevent water from falling onto the floor. The television provided in the apartment fail to pick up any station regardless .I believe that digital signal fail to travel that far. The cd player did work. .

Apart from the obvious ..Location...Rooms were comfortable, spacious and well equipped. However, although it is under renovation which of course justifies the low price..Its great value for money . Peaceful surrondings. Rooms are original ...Comfortable beds. Great bath tubs. Like the idea of Room codes...Not having to pass through a reception area. Plenty of space. Quaint and ideal for the low budget but attractive getaways either for business or weekend breaks...Close to town and local activities..Would recommend it to anyone. Under renovation...Not a problem and the basics are there...I Did find that the pillows are sparse and the spare ones in the closets are old..Could do with some new ones...Not all rooms have Iron and Ironing boards...Not all rooms have Microwaves...as there is no reception area would be nice for all rooms to have a Microwave.. Not all rooms have Mirrors located above a socket...Very important for drying hair ...Although I found rooms 1a and 1b attractive...Unfortunately the layout of the entrance ...makes the rooms very vunerable to noice..Main front door does not close properly...Visiters often spend time chatting at entrance and pin codes make it noisey...which is a pity as these rooms are attractive. The price variation of rooms is very little...But rooms 1a and 1b should be marked at the lowest price always as these rooms have not en suite...The Communial bathroom is two floors up....But very big and clean..but most inconvenient...Regards...

For the price, the Abbey Hotel offered basic but soulless accommodation. The bedding and room were clean and warm, with plenty of hot water! The unfinished feel to the place was a disappointment. The website was misleading, as we thought we were booking a room-only deal at a "manned" hotel, not a vacant property that we would have to access with key codes! Not warm and friendly!

I thought the building from the outside was magnificent and the location, right next to the Abbey is stunning. The room we had was excellent value for money if a little starkly equipped. I did not like the fact that there were no staff on hand at all to deal with any issues we had with the room.

Location, quietness, roominess, comfort Very creaky floorboards needs fixed. Lift out of order. Our room lacked a wardrobe and hangers. A reception would be more customer friendly. A lounge, bar and restaurant would be an improvement.Too impersonal but ok for a short stay. Looks like a work in progress.
