Just metres from Canterbury’s medieval West Gate, this charming building dates back to 1403. A former coaching inn, it offers free Wi-Fi and free parking, 2 minutes’ walk from the city centre.

Score from 449 reviews Superb
Very friendly and helpful reception staff. Good location, a little bit away for the centre but it was still easily within walking distance. The building had interesting corridors and staircases. Wonderfully quite during the night when the kitchen had completely shut down.
The poor sound insulation from above could have been annoying because of the creaky floors. In fact this was not a problem because out neighbours were quite but perhaps bear this in mind in making a choice.
Environment surrounding hotel
Not convenient stair and no slope to some floor.
friendly helpful staff. elegant surroundings and furnishings. rooms quite comfortable with everything that was needed on hand. bath easy to use and ample room for toiletries etc
food in bar at lunchtime on our first day took a long time to come but we were the only guests there and new carpets were being laid.
Room, bathroom, room service
No children's tariff for breakfast Toilet did not flush in bedroom
Friendly staff Good setting
The hotel has retained its old character. the bar and restaurant seem to have never changed. The staff were superb. Aura our host was a real gem in the restaurant, as were most everyone else. Its a little old, and not full of chrome and plastic. Just dark wood, and proper carpets, and masses of character.
Renovations were taking place at the time of our stay. I hope they don't tear the heart out of this old fashioned hotel. It is showing the odd sign of age, but that didn't seem to matter.
Friendly staff, clean, comfortable rooms, close to city centre and parking. Traditional building in a quiet location. This was my 3rd visit and I'm looking forward to visiting again
Builders on site on a Sunday morning. Concertina type bathroom door which didn't shut properly and broken bathroom seat
Location, staff, cleanliness
Noise from Kitchen fans which start up at 8.00am in the morning and were still on at night until about 10.00pm. very bad as it was a constant droning noise. I would recommend a room on the opposite side from the kitchens.
Location Bar Staff
Dinner not available in the restaurant despite being a resident (too busy) No breakfast until 0800 on a Saturday Noisy (kitchen fan and floorboards Small double bed (4 foot)
The room was very comfortable and clean. Good shower. Nice and quiet at night.
A bit of a walk into town. Room on the ground floor and view of car park.
Almost everything was great.
Price of breakfast
The cleanliness, the staff, the room .. everything spic and span .. its a spacious well organised place ..
A section of the hotel is under renovation and that seemed a bit odd since we got the window next to it .. but otherwise good experience
building work going on but to be fair, didn't start until we were out of bed
Comfort Cleanliness Friendly staff
The hotel is well back from a busy road in a beautiful green setting. We were greeted with courtesy, warmth and efficiency. The restaurant staff served us in the same spirit. The bright traditional décor throughout the hotel is impressive and the room well equipped, clean and conveyed a touch of luxury. I had stayed at Abbots Barton a couple of years ago, when I needed to be in Canterbury and, knowing that we would be coming for a Golden Wedding Anniversary in the town I was determined to bring my wife to this hotel...... and we were both glad we came. Thank you.
The shortage of parking space was difficult. I hope there will be increased space when the building development is complete. The view from the building site window was not so good but it did not bother us for a one night stay...... but next time !!!!!
Quiet location, excellent decor, comfortable room and relaxing bar all within easy reach of cathedral city of. Canterbury and Dover ferry port. Thank you.
Nice room, car park, good breakfast
No WiFi without registration. Breakfast should be included in the price.
Comfortable beds and very close to the city centre.
Upon arrival (half an hour after check in opens) we were told there would be a 40 min wait for our room which was a huge inconvenience to our tight itinerary for the day and very unexpected. We were upgraded to an 'executive room' but the main feature of the room (the jacuzzi bath) was out of order! Which we were informed, after enquiring about the fault, the hotel were aware of! We felt undervalued as guests. Generally disappointed by the service experienced.
Size and layout of room and that there was a bath not just a shower
Expensive for a family of four - pity there was no family room
Comfortable and clean Easy walking to town centre
Quiet location... and a good night's sleep
Phone alarm clock did not work. Invoice delivered under the door was not a VAT invoice.
