Location-green and quiet
small and uncomfortable double bed, old furniture, no parking arrangements
Excellent breakfast and good service from the staff.
Rooms can be noisy due to thin walls ansd poor sound insulation from above.
The hotel is well located, providing good basic facilities and clean and well run with an exceptionally helpful staff.
The room was rather cold as I visited in some unseasonably cold August weather (2014). The hotel has been sold and is due to close shortly for refurbishment as a boutique hotel, and it is likely that this will price out the regular traveller such as myself.
Everything was good : lovely fresh clean cotton sheets, good maid service, attentive service at breakfast, friendly reception,( the staff even recognised me as a returning customer from last year!), beautiful garden, thick, plush carpet and so on. I value the tea/coffee making facilities in the room
Ok my room was a bit narrow but that was reflected in the price and suited what I could afford. I very much fear that with the refurbishment you are planning especially to my two favourite rooms 19 and 15, I shall be unable to afford to return to Ailsa Craig much as I have enjoed it. You may want to think about your water supply as even when boiled in tea it does taste heavily of something, probably chlorine. You might like to think of serving real marmalade instead of the little plastic pots .
Quiet area while still close to City centre attractions - easily walkable. The staff were polite and friendly.
A bit jaded. Generally clean but duvets appeared grubby and lace curtains certainly were. Cooked breakfast was made with economy in mind, in both quality and quantity.
- The price during the Fringe was really acceptable - The location is great allowing for a quick walk for great views on Edinburgh - The hotel is well kept and the staff were very pleasant - Feels very homely - Breakfast had several options including hot meals included in the rate
- The rooms could be more ornate - One of the two rooms we had booked was much smaller then the other
A pleasant comfortable hotel in a very nice area of Edinburgh within walking distance of Princes Street etc.
The male member of staff was extremely polite and went out of his way to be helpful. Reasonable choice at breakfast.
Room cold - woke me up several times through the night. Stains on top cover of bed. No plug in washbasin.
We needed to carry the luggages through three long stairs to reach the room.
Good location, good size room (family room).
The entire property is ready for a solid renovation. Beds are not comfortable and linens are worn. However, given what we paid compared to other properties in Edinburgh, felt we got what we paid for (and were expecting).
Hotel is located in very peaceful neighborhood, though not far from centrum. It was value for the money paid.
It is not problem for me but guests must be aware that there is no lift. The double bed is somewhat narrow.
Staff excellent especially female receptionist on in the nights. Liked where situated. Quiet. Very helpful.
Breakfast a bit on the sad Side. No fresh fruit. Very small portion of hot breakfast but service good and helpful. Hard to enter and exit shower room no 5. Bar a bit sad too!
Dirty window in the room
Reception staff on arrival , comfortable nights sleep and excellent breakfast in the morning,
Incredibly good deal through booking.com Lovely large room with views over cobblestone street and parkland. Short walk to bus stop and local eateries. Free street parking over the weekend. Extremely helpful staff on reception.
Hotel was fully booked, so we were unable to book a second night :(
We had a very pleasant stay at the Ailsa craig, the rooms were fine and the staff were very helpful and friendly. A very good location, just a 15 minute stroll and you are in the heart of Edinburgh
Bathrooms were clean Staff was nice Breakfast was good Fairly easy walk to main downtown area ~ 15 minutes.
Older property, not super well kept up. More like a hostel with en suite bath than a hotel. Beds were uncomfortable.
excellent breakfast & staff
no quilt cover
Location easy walk to Downtown. Very good Staff always available to assist.
NO LIFT so many stairs.
We had an excellent stay here. My young son was unwell during one night and the staff couldn't have been more helpful with accommodating our needs. The room was very spacious and our request for bedding configuration was no trouble for them.
staff very helpful. location excellent nice room cleaniness nice and quiet.
fact that windows did not open. no lift. hence should we go again would ask for lower floor. also didn't like the idea of the reception in the dining area, guest arriving or leaving have to go through this area to get in or out when guest are having breakfast.
The location was perfect,
The hotel needs a little remodel.
Location. Helpfulness of staff.
Décor - In need of a makeover. Window in Bedroom 15 unable to remain open. Sadly, no better than 2* Fixtures and fittings 2nd rate and appears to have been decorated on the cheap.
Their breakfast porridge
Not having a lift , so having to walk up 49 steps to the bedroom! Very slippery shower overbath. No real lounge area downstairs to be able to sit and relax. Far away from any restaurant or cafe .
Only a 10/15 minute walk to Waverley Station.
Breakfast was very poor. Ingredients of the full English appeared to be very cheap...didn't eat it. One coathanger in room for two people! Had a room on the top floor which was in need of updating..as was the hotel.
