The Merlin, an elegant 19th-century inn, is located just 500 metres from the independent shops and restaurants in affluent Alderley Edge’s village centre.
Score from 130 reviews Very good
Well kept accommodation, tasteful country decor with comfortable bed. Walking distance to restaurants and bars plus good hotel bar. Room was a small double but the amenities compensated for that.
Room was very clean and looked like it had recently been renovated.
My room (10), was next to the kitchen, so all night there was constant pots and pans banging etc. I had the window open, and at 11:30 the chef (Shaun/ Sean) stood right outside ordering all his food for the next day. I felt that for the cost of the room, the quality of sleep was very poor. I had an early depart and explained when settling the bill that I wasn't impressed but there was no interest.
Got us sandwiches as arrived late
No coffee making facilities in room or even a glass to get water from the tap. Walls very thin.
breakfast bed proximity to airport bathroom
room was hot (42 C) and stuffy...no a/c...we opened the window to noise from a wedding and smells from the kitchen. Private function taking place...no place to park and no help from staff
Nice accomodations, good breakfast, close to town, food, and train station. Had both plugs for UK and USA appliances.
My room (420) had a unrestricted view of the well kept and colourful garden. A quiet venue with friendly staff and service. Food selection was from snack to Brasserie to 5/7/9 course meal with a wine flight which is enjoyable unless you are planning to write your presentation afterwards (not recommended of course). Free WiFi important. Substantial breakfast options. Not too far from woods for an off-road run. For business purposes it was ideal. Although there wasn't any heating on the room was warm. Keeping the windows open wasn't a problem as it overlooked the garden and so was quiet.
At £145 per night, I didn't think the room was value for money but it was a very late booking and so we didn't get the best price perhaps. As it was for business I had no choice as location helped my decision. Were it my own money I would have to think twice. My room (420) appeared small and dark mainly due to old fashioned furniture (dark stained and wooden) which dominated the room. Not a complaint but an observation that some modernisation will brighten up the room. Put in perspective, it wouldn't prevent me returning or recommending.
Pleasant room nicely furnished,Comfortable. Food excellent. Staff helpful, would visit hotel again.
No lounge, had to have pre dinner drinks at table used for bar meals. Had to have after dinner coffee at dinning table. Would have preferred room with view of Garden which was pleasant and well maintained.
This was a present for my sister who had been married that day and couldn't fault the service we received when checking them in or whilst they were staying there
The room and organisation
The squeaky floorboards on the landing and adjoining rooms
A friendly and comfortable hotel. I spent very little time apart from sleeping and breakfast to judge in depth things like food but if the smoked haddock I had for breakfast was an indication (fresh and well cooked) this should be good as well.
I have no negative comments
Good Breafast and nice staff
No bottled water in the room
Nice location Good breakfast
£11.50 for a glass of very ordinary red wine in the bar.
Food...We ate in the Brasserie on the two evenings we were there and the atmosphere, service and menu choice were all very good. Daytime temperatures were in the 30s during our stay so the air conditioning was well appreciated. Breakfast was also excellent. Lovely, well kept garden, a good view of which we had from our bedroom window.
The Wi-Fi didn't work too well where we were in the building. The air conditioning in the Brasserie did not extend to our room which would have been appreciated due to the inordinately hot temperatures we were experiencing during our stay. However a small fan was supplied. We also felt the room was on the small side for a double and it would have been nice had there been a couple of easy chairs in there. As it was, the only place to sit down, other than the dressing table stool, was the bed.
Terrible staff & customer service. We were greated by a unwelcoming front of house member of staff, which was followed by the same sort of service at the bar in the evening. I was over charged for x2 glasses of prosecco, which came to a total of £28! When I later questioned the cost, the man who served me said 'Well we don't do that sort of wine by the glass so I charged you for the bottle' Only then was I given the rest of the bottle. Appauling service. I will not recommend this hotel to friends or family.
The room was good, reception staff excellent
Breakfast was shocking serve yourself full English was not what I expected,,freezing cold bacon covered in fat not good, was a let down.was in a room close to the kitchen had to listen to the staff shouting at each other all day
restaurant was excellent, staff excellent, service excellent
room had no air-conditioning and was quite tiny room decor looking quite tired.
Room size very small for a Double smallest I have ever stayed in. Prices are high which reflects the area only. And has no reflection on the hotel quality. The premier inn is just down the road with superior rooms at competitive rates
Food is amazing
Room a little small & no air con.
Superb location on edge of village Staff very polite and friendly Very relaxed atmosphere
Having to leave !
All staff very welcoming Cleanliness if hotel
lack of trust. having to pay in advance no doubt in case we made a run for it. Being initially fobbed off with a superior room which was no better than a standard one we then looked at
The staff were excellent.
The decor in our bathroom was rather tired.
Room was very nice with excellent view, big bathroom and everything like iron, hairdryer, mini bar etc provided.
The bed was rather small for two people by modern standards. There was no guard on the sink plug hole - lost a small brush down the hole. Could have been worse.
