A warm welcome and very friendly staff. My room was comfortable and clean, with a very old fashioned feel to it.
The runnning water caused the system to make a very loud, unpleasant sound which was unexpected. I could only find 1 double socket that was easily accessible and that was high up the wall.
A welcoming environment, the room was beautiful, very clean and the private bathroom was right next door with a bathtube! The full english breakfast was good, and the service really fast. Two bus stops nearby are served by many bus routes that will take you to the city centre (princes street, royal mile...) in 10 minutes, making it a good location in a quiet and charming neighbourhood.
Location and cleanliness
The room was spacious, the television had many channels. The bed was comfy and the room was very clean. Staff were pleasant.
Very little to complain about. The shower door was stuck slightly a jar. The chairs at breakfast were old fashioned and uncomfortable.
Everything, the staff made you feel at home, great service, extremly well thought out interior design and relaxing
Could not find anything wrong
Great, reliable breakfasts. Choice of cereal and/or full cooked Scotish breakfast with toast. Easy bus access.
2-3km walk into city center.
Comfortable rooms; good breakfast; friendly staff; convenient location good value
Coffee too weak Wi Fi sporadic
The location , warmth of staff, and breakfast.
Room facility for complimentary tea/coffee . -- difficult access to plug in for heating.
Friendly, helpful manager-owner Relaxed atmosphere in a pleasant environment Good breakfast service Plentiful supply of information leaflets in lobby
Room facing main road made it slightly noisy from traffic at night/early morning (however, became more used to this after first night)
Quiet, safe area. Nearby off street parking. Cafetiere of coffee at breakfast. Arrivals possible from noon.
No hooks or rail on which to hang towels in the bathroom! Drawer handle fell off on touching! No biscuits on tea tray!
Very uncomfortable beds Noisy with being on front street
It's not to far from downtown with a lot of bus lines in front of.
Wi-fi is terrible.
Good location, clean & well presented room, nice breakfast. Good value for money.
Room and bed were comfortable, staff was very friendly.
No toiletries provided (like shampoos, so bring your own), and no options for breakfast other than English breakfast.
Rooms are a bit dated, plumbing exposed, but clean
This was a lovely place to stay, with a nearby bus stop. Very clean with friendly staff.
Comfy rooms Excellent breakfast Excellent location
Parking on the side streets but from Monday-Friday 10am-11:30am it is permit only.
house full of original features Clean breakfast
I am mystified how anyone could have a hot drink - tray, kettle etc all provided but nowhere to plug kettle in without moving wardrobe, bed or being much taller than I am to plug in on wall above TV and then would have had to hold it while it boiled. Gave up and had cold water instead!
The room we had overlooked the garden and had inside shutters to cover the windows as well curtains. I have difficulty in sleeping if the room is too light but the shutters kept a lot of light out which I liked. The property was easy walking distance to centre of Edinburgh so we were able to leave the car at the guest house and didnt have to worry about parking in the centre.
Our private bathroom was situated outside our room and I would have preffered access to it from within our room. However I was aware of this when I booked so it wasnt a problem for me. There was nothing I didnt like.
comfy bed. good breakfast.
noisy floorboards. room 4
The couple who run the guesthouse were very nice and accommodating and went out of their way to help us. I was staying at the guesthouse as I was running the Edinburgh Marathon the following day so needed somewhere quieet to stay. The location was great for this, it was only a leisurely 20 minutes stroll from Waverley train station but the area was quiet and peaceful. Great view of Arthurs Seat from our rear bedroom too.
Breakfast was good.
Run down , no parking, no restaurants nearby, overpriced.
Staff friendly and helpful, breakfast good
Shower broken, no soap, thin walls, shabby decor in room
The room was described as having a private bathroom beside the bedroom. This was true but what wasn't explained is that the room and bathroom were just off the main hall and, despite the flimsy screen provided, when using the bathroom we were clearly visible to anyone descending the stairs to go to breakfast for instance. It also meant it was very noisy. We were woken before seven each morning by people ringing the doorbell or getting breakfast ready. It was very intrusive and unpleasant. We raised the point and were given bathrobes which did not make up for the inconvenience. My wife commented on all this as we were leaving and found the staff response rude and dismissive. I cannot see how the Alexander Guest house has a good rating. We did not enjoy our stay and certainly wouldn't have gone there if we had realised what it was like.
