Very small room and tiny shower
We are a younger couple from London who were looking for a small, family run, cosy hotel. That is not what we found. Although the location is good (you can hop on a bus to the centre and back very easily) we had a very disappointing stay at Allison House. The bed was exceptionally uncomfortable - not to mention the fact that we requested a double bed, but had two singles pushed together. The bedding was not as clean as I would have liked and was not warm at all. If they had provided a thick duvet (rather than a limp blanket) I could just about understand the rationale behind turning the heating off at night, but since that is not the case - we were freezing and this prevented us from sleeping. The shower is also appalling. The water was so weak it wasn't even possible to warm up or wash your hair. The breakfast was average. It was served by a very harassed looking lady who was clearly trying to manage the whole process on her own (and kept saying so), This made for an unrelaxing experience. Not to mention the fact that there was a bucket in the room because the ceiling was leaking - and no one seemed to apologise for this fact. Not the owners fault of course, but at least acknowledge that it took away from the experience. We arrived on December 31 and were told there would be no room service on January 1 (I.e no one would clean the room / replace towels etc.) and while I understand that New Years day is a bank holiday, at £480 for 3 nights, I expected that to be done. If you are going to inflate your prices for a holiday period, it doesn't seem fair to correspondingly reduce your services at the same time. When someone did come to clean the room, they woke us up by entering the room, and instead of quietly leaving and apologising, we were told if we wanted the room cleaned we needed to get up and leave. I think that is unacceptable. Overall, had we paid £100-£150 for 3 nights rather than £480 I think it might just have been worth it.
Welcome Location Parking so close to town Room size Facilities, wifi etc Complimentary drinks Breakfast - fruit particularly High ceilings - 22 steps between floors

The owner was very helpful and flexible with meal times
Lovely lady in breakfast service and cleaning. Great location with very regular bus service right outside the hotel. Good breakfast. Nice Xmas decor. Good value for money compared to similar ones around the area.
Horrible water pressure takes ages for a shower. Breakfast sausages need to be less 'plastic', try offering some haggis and fresh orange juice. Grumpy manager, poor welcome when we arrived. Very cool rooms during the night (unless you turn on the noisy little electric heaters). Poor sound insulation. Doesn't feel like a 4* at all.
Staff are friendly and welcoming. Rooms comfortable and clean. Breakfast excellent with a range of fresh fruit, cereal etc. Cooked breakfast also very good. Long walk into town but bus service good.
This is a excellent place to stay clean well equipped friendly comfy bed I could go on and on we will be returning this is the jewel in the crown
there was nothing we didn't like everything was 10 out of 10

Parked car and took the bus just outside B&B to the main attractions. Very convenient. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and well equipped. Excellent breakfast. Would recommend this B&B and have done. Thank you to everyone at the Allison.
I have asthma and we were in room 10. Top floor and had to go up a lot of stairs. Not good, Although I'm sure if I'd known in advance I could have requested a room on a lower floor if available. A couple of small repairs required. Sink plug and doors.
Furniture scruffy and cushions on bed need replacing shower cubicle tiny almost impossible to get a proper shower and I'm only 5ft3inch and a size10 breakfast was not the best quality undercooked bacon and sausage
- heater did not work - no heater in the bathroom - bad sound insulation
Nice well lit place at night made us feel safe.
A bit of a walk away from the city center and people were smoking in the halls.
location just a bus ride into town or you can walk 20 mins. lots of space to hang clothes. beautiful house. free whiskey/ sherry was a lovely touch
Beautiful hotel. Clean, tidy, friendly staff. Lovely breakfast. Decent location, walking distance to Castle, shops and pubs etc... Bus stop opposite...
Shower was always cold :(
Breakfast and accommodation
The doors were a little weak so I could hear loud from the outside.
The proprietor was very friendly, room warm, clean and comfortable. Breakfast portions generous.
Location - near bus stops with direct connections to Edinburgh City. Comfort of room and furniture. Excellent breakfast. Helpful staff in all respects.
The fact that the hotel does not serve evening meals.
Bedroom window stuck open so room was a bit cold despite secondary glazing.
Close to downtown with easy access to public transport. Off street parking.
Smell of cigarette smoke in the common rooms but thankfully, not in the room. Bathroom was very small but functional.
Easy commute into town. Plenty of buses, every two minutes. Get a day pass to allow you to move around the area.
Parking is on the forecourt and is a problem if full. Leave keys with owners, they will move cars around to let others out!!
Perfect place to stay. Staff were friendly and welcoming, room was comfortable, spotlessly clean and homely. The breakfast was the best in terms of quality and choice I have ever come across and I travel a lot. Would definitely recommend.
Very handy to buses. Off street parking. The 'breakfast lady' was great - her cooking was great and her service was even better.
Room was stuffy, the window did not open - had been recently painted so should have been checked and fixed. Bed was too hard.
The people work here are all very nice and helpful, helping for bus direction and moving suitcases. The breakfast has more fruits and tea selections than other hotels.
room is a bit too small
