This has been a bitterly disappointing, indignant and insulting
experience for me. It has been my third trip to the uk in 4 years, but I
was denied my pre-booked room because the caretaker who spoke Spanish to
someone else (?owner of property) on the telephone and was extremely
rude and threatening to me, said that I had not arrived by 10 pm, that
rules are rules, so my room was given away to some other Spanish-
speaking people who I could see coming and going through the front door.
He did not give his name, and did not want to know that I had driven
over 10 exhausting hours from Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales to get
to Cambridge due to the numerous and horrific road closures all over
central and southern England, and that when I finally arrived at
Cambridge in the dark at 9.45 pm, Alpha Milton Guest House could not be
located till I got off the car and walked up and down the main street
for 45 minutes, asking the locals for direction who didn't seem to
know either, before discovering that a van had parked right in front of
it on the footpath, thereby obscurring the property and its name and
number, which was extremely difficult to see due to the darkness and
poor street lighting. By the time I rang the door bell bags in hand, it
was 10.25 pm. Yet this obnoxious Spanish-speaking man had the audacity
to tell me to shut up if I wanted him to find me another room elsewhere.
I told him in no uncertain terms that he could keep his room, I
don't want it anymore, and that he has no need to be so rude, I am a
seasoned traveller from overseas who has tried to be reasonable, and
that he could at least show some empathy. After all, he is supposed to
be providing a hospitality service looking after travellers' need
for shelter and protection during their journey. He had better not
charge my credit card the gbp90 (for the room only with no breakfast)
which he gave away anyway!!!
